Phantom Blade Zero uses a read-and-respond action system: you attack, watch an enemy’s commitment, then choose a parry or a dodge while switching among a large set of weapons and Phantom Edges. Your long-term power comes from weapon mastery, forms, techniques, accessories, summons and recoverable upgrade investment rather than from a simple linear stat ladder.
The game is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, according to S-Game’s official site. PlayStation listings show October 28 in the United States and select regions, so the date depends on territory and storefront timing. The combat details below combine developer explanations with clearly labeled pre-release hands-on observations; final balance, controls and timing can still change.

How Phantom Blade Zero’s combat is supposed to work
S-Game presents combat as a dark wuxia action system built around deliberate reactions. Attacks are not the only answer to an incoming strike: you decide whether to meet it with a parry or create space with a dodge, then use the opening to continue your own offense. That makes enemy animation, attack commitment and distance more important than simply holding an attack button.

In a PlayStation Blog deep dive, S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said the team wanted players to shape a combat setup and express their own style. The systems shown support that goal through a broad weapon roster, secondary weapons, build accessories, summons and a reforge option that lets you recover upgrade materials for another weapon.

A GamesRadar hands-on report described the game as a wuxia-flavored action RPG with a “fresh Soulslike twist.” That is a reviewer’s characterization of a pre-release demo, not an official genre classification or a promise that every system follows a particular Soulslike rule.
Parrying and dodging: choosing the right defense
Parry when you want to contest the attack
Parrying is one of the two confirmed defensive responses. It is the aggressive option: instead of leaving the attack’s range, you attempt to meet its timing and turn the enemy’s commitment into an opening. The exact reward for a successful parry, the amount of damage prevented and any stamina or posture rules have not been fully enumerated in the published material, so those details should not be treated as settled mechanics.
GamesRadar’s normal-difficulty demo report described the parry windows as reasonably long. That is useful context for learning the rhythm, but it is one reviewer’s experience with a pre-release build. It does not establish a universal frame count, and difficulty, enemy type or the final build could alter the timing.

Dodging is the alternative defensive answer. Use it when you need to move out of an attack’s path, preserve a safer distance or avoid committing to a tight parry. The sources confirm that dodging is part of the core system, but they do not publish invulnerability duration, recovery frames, stamina costs or a complete list of attacks that must be dodged.

What the color cues do—and do not—tell you
A Creative Bloq preview says incoming attacks use color-coded cues to indicate which defensive response is appropriate. The cited description does not specify the color-to-action mapping, so a reliable table such as “red means parry” or “blue means dodge” cannot be published from the available evidence. Treat the colors as a signal to watch during play, then learn their meaning from the game’s own tutorial and final interface rather than relying on an unofficial chart.
The practical lesson is to read the whole attack: cue, animation, distance and timing. A color alone should not be presented as a guaranteed answer until the released game documents the mapping.
A weapon system built for different combat identities
The official PlayStation deep dive says players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Those are developer-published counts, not an independently audited inventory, and “more than 30” should not be shortened to exactly 30.
| Weapon category | Confirmed scope or behavior | What it changes in play |
|---|---|---|
| Main weapons | More than 30, according to S-Game | Primary attack patterns, forms and techniques vary by weapon. |
| Phantom Edges | 25 secondary weapons, according to S-Game | Secondary attacks can add damage, control or a different response to an opening. |
| Drunken Sword | Soul dodges and weaves while building drunken energy | Movement and resource buildup are part of the weapon’s identity. |
| White Serpent and Crimson Viper | Twin blades pairing a long sword with an orbiting blade | Combines a conventional blade with a separate orbiting attack element. |
| Soft Snake Sword | Coils around other attacks | Its flexible behavior can alter how you link attacks. |
| Iron fists | Close-range fist weapon example | Emphasizes direct hand-to-hand engagement. |
| Tiger Cannon | Ranged or projectile-style weapon example shown in the deep-dive recap | Provides a different way to exploit distance and openings. |
| Flaming Mane | Named weapon example in the deep-dive recap | Illustrates the breadth of the arsenal; its complete rules were not detailed. |
The named weapons above come from Epic Games Store’s recap of S-Game’s 20-minute deep dive. They are examples, not a complete inventory, and the recap does not establish every weapon’s damage type, range, upgrade cost or ideal pairing.

How upgrades, forms and builds fit together
Skill tree and weapon mastery
The deep-dive recap says a skill tree improves mastery and that weapon upgrades unlock forms and techniques. Progression therefore affects how a weapon behaves, not only a character number on a status screen. A weapon investment can open additional attacks or variations, giving you a reason to specialize in a style that matches how you handle parries, dodges and punish windows.
Accessories and summons
The official presentation also identifies accessories for creating builds and summons as part of the combat toolkit. The available descriptions do not list every accessory effect, summon, slot limit or activation rule. Think of them as additional build layers rather than assume a fixed best-in-slot setup.
Reforge makes experimentation less risky
S-Game explicitly describes a reforge option that returns upgrade materials so you can invest them in another weapon. This supports experimentation: you can try a different weapon identity without permanently losing every material spent on the first one. The published material does not state the exact refund percentage, any fee, cooldown, level restriction or whether every resource is returned, so those conditions must be checked in the released game.
Combat and exploration can unlock more options
Some defeated enemies expand the arsenal, according to the PlayStation deep dive. Side quests may also open new story paths. In practical terms, optional combat and exploration can feed both narrative progression and equipment access; the complete unlock route and the identity of every qualifying enemy have not been published.

Difficulty modes are different experiences, not just health settings
| Mode | Design described by the developers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Designed for players who want to enjoy the story | Players prioritizing narrative flow and a less demanding combat pressure. |
| Hellwalker | Uses more advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence | Players who want enemies to respond more intelligently and demand stronger adaptation. |
| Sixty-Six Days | A demanding option tied to Soul’s 66-day lifespan; each death removes one day | Players who want the story premise to create an additional consequence for failure. |
Epic’s recap explains that Sixty-Six Days turns the premise into a rule: Soul has 66 days to live, and every death removes one day. That is a pressure system layered onto the campaign, not merely an assertion that enemies have more health. Likewise, Hellwalker’s defining description is adaptive intelligence, while Wayfarer is framed around enjoying the story.
The sources do not give enemy multipliers, exact artificial-intelligence behaviors, checkpoint rules or whether modes can be changed mid-campaign. Do not assume a conventional easy/normal/hard slider until the final game documents those options.
A practical combat loop for learning the system
- Watch before committing. Identify the enemy’s stance, range and attack cue. Do not assume every threatening animation has the same timing.
- Choose a defense. Use a parry when you can meet the timing and want to stay engaged; use a dodge when moving away or around the attack is safer.
- Confirm the opening. After a successful defense, look for the enemy’s recovery before spending a long attack sequence. The exact punish window varies by enemy and is not specified in the pre-release material.
- Use the weapon’s identity. Drunken Sword rewards weaving and energy buildup; twin blades, the Soft Snake Sword, fists and the other named examples encourage different spacing and attack choices.
- Add a Phantom Edge when it helps the situation. A Phantom Edge can supply a damaging strike or another secondary behavior. GamesRadar specifically reported using an axe Phantom Edge as a damaging attack in its demo.
- Review your build after unlocking forms. Skill-tree mastery, weapon upgrades, accessories and summons can change how a weapon functions. If a setup does not suit you, reforge is intended to return upgrade materials for another investment, subject to final rules.
- Explore between fights. Side quests may open story routes, and certain defeated enemies may expand the arsenal. Treat optional encounters as potential progression opportunities rather than only detours.
