Phantom Blade Zero is planned to include at least 50 bosses, with each major weapon and Phantom Edge tied to a specific boss victory. Developer interviews also describe weaknesses that reward equipment experimentation, enemy AI that adapts to player habits, and a 66 Days mode that permits only 66 deaths. These are pre-release plans reported from interviews with S-GAME founder and game director Liang Qiwei (Soulframe) and sound producer Bo Caisheng.
At least 50 bosses, linked directly to the weapon system
S-GAME says Phantom Blade Zero has “at least 50 bosses,” with the possibility of more before release. The number is connected to the planned arsenal: about 30 main weapons plus more than 20 secondary weapons, known as Phantom Edges. According to Soulframe in an interview reported by Game8 on October 13, 2026, “Because every single weapon and Phantom Edge is obtained by defeating a specific boss, there are at least 50 distinct boss fights across the full game.”

That structure makes bosses more than progression gates. A new weapon is intended to be a tangible reward for learning a particular fight, while the breadth of the arsenal gives the developers a reason to vary boss patterns, defenses and arenas. The wording is a developer claim about the planned game, not a verified final roster; the number could increase, and the finished game could change before launch.

Yes, according to the developers. The interviews describe weaknesses that can shorten a fight or open a safer route through it, but not every weakness is meant to be obvious from the start.

Hard, equipment-based weaknesses
Some counters are mechanical. The clearest reported example involves shield-bearing enemies: particular heavy weapons are more effective at breaking their defenses. Other examples described by Game8 include elemental or mechanical vulnerabilities. The practical implication is that a boss or elite enemy may be difficult with one loadout but substantially more manageable with another.
Soft weaknesses discovered through experimentation
Other advantages are less explicit. Players may need to test different weapons, timing and positioning to discover which attacks interrupt a pattern or punish a recovery animation. The reports do not provide a complete weakness chart, so no universal list of counters can be confirmed before release.
Story-linked weaknesses
Some interactions are tied to characters and narrative context. Equipping a weapon associated with a particular character can reportedly trigger additional dialogue or alter an enemy’s behavior or phase. These are not simply damage multipliers; they connect build choices to the story and may make exploration valuable even when it does not immediately improve combat statistics.

How the difficulty modes are expected to work
The Times of India’s October 12, 2026 report describes difficulty settings ranging from Invader to Rebel. The stated design goal is to make enemies more aggressive and responsive rather than merely giving them much larger health bars or damage values.
| Mode or system | What has been reported | What is not yet established |
|---|---|---|
| Invader | One end of the announced difficulty range. | Exact numerical modifiers and whether it is the easiest setting. |
| Rebel | Another standard difficulty option, with enemy behavior expected to differ from lower settings. | Exact AI, health and damage values. |
| Reverse Heaven | A harder mode listed alongside the standard difficulties. | Its complete rules and unlock conditions. |
| Hellwalker | Used as the AI reference for the most demanding behavior described in the reports. | Full ruleset and progression requirements. |
| 66 Days | Uses the same AI as Hellwalker, according to Game8, and allows only 66 player deaths. | Whether deaths carry across a save, chapter or complete run. |
Because the developers have emphasized behavior, higher difficulty may change how enemies read the player rather than simply inflating statistics. The final balance, names and availability of each mode remain subject to change.
What “adaptive AI” means in practice
Game8’s interview report says enemies may feint, cancel combos, bait parries and react to distance, aggression and defensive habits. A player who repeatedly answers an attack with the same parry, for example, could face an enemy that delays the strike or changes the follow-up. Likewise, constant retreat or over-aggression may influence how an opponent closes space or chooses an interruption.

Soulframe said, “As of right now, nobody on our team has pulled off a deathless run.” That statement illustrates the intended challenge but is not an independently measured completion statistic. It also does not establish that the released game will be impossible to finish without dying.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is special about 66 Days mode?
66 Days combines the hardest reported enemy intelligence with a finite failure budget: the player may die only 66 times. Game8 says its AI is identical to Hellwalker AI, so the extra pressure comes from the death limit rather than a separate set of enemy behaviors.
The reports do not clarify whether the 66-death counter applies to an entire playthrough, a particular mode attempt or another unit of progression. Until S-GAME publishes the rules, it is safest to treat the limit as a headline feature rather than assume how resets, checkpoints or saves will work.

Weapon experimentation is supported by respec and checkpoint rules
Developers reportedly want players to change equipment without permanently wasting upgrade materials. Weapon levels can be reset, returning the investment so it can be assigned to another weapon. That system is especially relevant when a boss favors a heavy, elemental or otherwise specialized tool.
Standard enemies are also reported not to respawn after the player rests at a checkpoint. This discourages repetitive farming loops and makes forward exploration the primary way to gather resources and discover encounters. The reports do not say whether every enemy type follows this rule or how it applies to optional areas.
“Kung Fu Punk”: the setting behind the combat
S-GAME uses “Kung Fu Punk” to describe a world where Chinese wuxia, machinery and magic coexist. The blend is intended to appear in enemy designs, weapons, visual effects, music and the broader environment rather than serve as a label for combat alone.

Sound producer Bo Caisheng said the soundtrack draws on the evolution of wuxia cinema, combining traditional Chinese instruments with modern electronic sounds. The game’s structure is described as a pyramid: RPG progression and map exploration form the base, intricate level design occupies the middle, and high-speed combat sits at the top.
Side stories are therefore part of the main design rather than optional decoration. The developers say side-story bosses can affect the ending of the central narrative, giving exploration a potential story consequence even when it does not award a direct combat upgrade.
What remains unknown before release
- The final boss count could exceed 50, but a complete roster has not been published.
- Detailed weakness tables, damage values and weapon statistics have not been announced.
- The exact differences among Invader, Rebel, Reverse Heaven and Hellwalker remain unspecified.
- The scope of the 66-death counter, including save and checkpoint behavior, is not stated.
- Release date, confirmed platforms and physical editions were not established in the cited October 2026 reports.
For now, Phantom Blade Zero’s defining promise is a tightly connected loop: bosses provide weapons, weapons expose different answers to enemy defenses, and adaptive opponents are intended to punish a single habitual solution. Whether that design reaches the final game will depend on S-GAME’s release implementation.
