Neither petrol nor diesel is always cheaper overall. The answer depends on the exact cars, what you pay for them, how far and where you drive, how long you keep them, and their likely running and resale costs. Diesel’s higher fuel economy can offset its higher price per litre on some journeys, but it does not by itself prove a lower total cost of ownership.
For a UK comparison, use the same ownership period and annual mileage for both candidates, calculate fuel from each car’s official combined consumption and current local prices, then include purchase or finance cost, insurance, tax, servicing, repairs, depreciation and any applicable clean-air charges.
What the latest UK fuel figures do—and do not—show
HM Revenue & Customs’ advisory fuel rate table effective from 1 September 2026 lists a higher reference price for diesel than petrol: 179.2p per litre compared with 159.9p. Its mean miles-per-gallon figures are also higher for diesel in each engine-size band. Put together, those averages do not produce one fuel-cost winner for every band.

The figures below are HMRC advisory data for company-car mileage reimbursement calculations. They are useful as dated context, not a forecast for a private driver or a like-for-like test of two particular cars. The bands also differ by fuel type, so do not treat a petrol and diesel figure in the same row as a comparison between matched engines.

| HMRC engine-size band | Fuel | Mean MPG | Advisory cost per mile | Rounded advisory rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol, up to 1,400cc | Petrol | 50.7 | 14.3p | 14p |
| Diesel, up to 1,600cc | Diesel | 55.7 | 14.6p | 15p |
| Petrol, 1,401–2,000cc | Petrol | 42.8 | 17.0p | 17p |
| Diesel, 1,601–2,000cc | Diesel | 49.6 | 16.4p | 16p |
| Petrol, over 2,000cc | Petrol | 27.2 | 26.8p | 27p |
| Diesel, over 2,000cc | Diesel | 36.6 | 22.2p | 22p |
The middle band has a slightly lower diesel advisory cost per mile, while the smallest band has a slightly lower petrol rate; the largest band has a lower diesel rate. The differences are not proof that a particular diesel will beat a particular petrol car: the figures are averages by broad engine-size category, not results from the same model, trim, age or driving conditions.
HMRC’s rates round to whole pence for the reimbursement table, so use the more precise advisory cost figures only for what they represent. They are not household bills. The table cannot account for your local forecourt price, route, driving style, traffic, vehicle condition or the cost of buying and maintaining the car.
How to calculate fuel cost for the cars you are considering
Compare the actual candidate cars rather than relying on a fuel-type average. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) publishes official model fuel-consumption data and calculates fuel cost for 10,000 miles using a combined consumption figure and a fuel-price assumption. It says its price assumptions are intended to allow fair comparison, while also warning that prices change over the year and vary by region. For a current household estimate, use a current local pump price and your own expected mileage.

Use a consistent calculation
- Choose the exact versions. Record model year, engine, trim and transmission for each car. A model name alone is not enough: versions can have different official fuel-consumption figures.
- Find each car’s official combined consumption. Use the VCA figure as a common starting point. Keep the same type of figure for both cars; do not compare one car’s combined result with the other’s best-case or urban figure.
- Choose realistic annual mileage. Use the distance you expect to drive in a typical year, not the car’s tank range or an assumed mileage that makes one option look better.
- Check current local prices for both fuels. Fuel prices change, and the VCA explicitly notes regional variation. A dated national or advisory rate is not a substitute for prices where you normally fill up.
- Estimate annual fuel use and cost. For UK MPG, estimate litres as annual miles ÷ MPG × 4.54609. Multiply litres by the price per litre to estimate annual spend. Divide by annual miles if you want a cost-per-mile figure.
- Repeat for the whole ownership period. Multiply annual fuel spend by the number of years only as a first pass; if you expect mileage or prices to change, model those years separately.
For example, if a car’s official combined figure is 50 UK MPG, an estimate for 10,000 miles is 10,000 ÷ 50 × 4.54609, or about 909 litres. At a hypothetical local price of £1.60 per litre, that is about £1,455 in fuel for the year. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a claimed price or a forecast for a real car. Replace both inputs with the exact vehicle’s figure and a current price you can verify.
Official consumption figures are controlled test results, not a guarantee of what a driver will achieve in everyday use. Treat them as a consistent baseline for comparing cars. Your expected result can differ with route, speed, traffic, load, weather and vehicle condition; where possible, check evidence relevant to the exact model and your usual journeys, and test the estimate with a more cautious consumption assumption as well.
Why annual mileage changes the answer
Fuel savings accumulate with distance. If one candidate has a lower estimated fuel cost per mile, driving more miles gives that difference more opportunity to offset a higher purchase price or other costs. At low mileage, the initial price difference may take longer to recover. That is a relationship to test with your own numbers, not a universal diesel break-even mileage.

Calculate the fuel-cost difference per mile, then multiply it by the miles you expect to drive over the period you will own the car. Compare that total with the difference in purchase or finance cost and the other ownership costs. If the lower-fuel-cost option costs more upfront, the simple fuel-only distance at which the difference is recovered is the extra upfront cost divided by the per-mile saving. That calculation is meaningful only when you disclose the exact prices, versions, mileage, fuel-price assumptions and period—and it still excludes insurance, maintenance, depreciation and charges.

Run at least two mileage scenarios
- Lower-mileage case: use a realistic year in which you drive less than usual. This shows whether a possible fuel advantage is too small to matter against a higher acquisition price.
- Expected case: use your best estimate of annual distance and trip mix, not a generic “average driver.”
- Higher-mileage case: test a credible increase, such as a longer commute or regular work travel, to see whether the fuel-cost difference becomes material.
Do not assume high mileage automatically makes diesel cheaper. It makes fuel economy more consequential, but only the total numbers for the cars under consideration can show whether that benefit outweighs their purchase, repair, insurance and resale differences.
Compare total ownership cost, not just fuel or range
A car that travels farther on a tank may reduce how often you stop, but tank range is not a measure of how much the car costs to own. MoneyHelper’s general consumer guidance says petrol cars tend to cost less to buy, while diesel fuel costs more and diesel cars usually travel farther per tank. Those broad tendencies are not guarantees for a specific model, used-car listing or driver.

For each candidate, estimate the same categories over the same number of years. Use actual quotes or documented history where possible; mark assumptions clearly rather than presenting uncertain estimates as fixed costs.
| Cost category | What to compare | Why it can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase or finance | Comparable asking or transaction prices, deposit, fees and total finance cost for the exact age, trim and condition | A higher initial cost has to be offset by savings elsewhere during the time you own the car. |
| Fuel | Official combined consumption, expected annual miles and current local petrol or diesel price | This is the running-cost area where the official MPG difference directly matters. |
| Insurance | Quotes for the same driver, address, cover, excess and use | Insurance is specific to the vehicle and driver; a fuel-type generalisation cannot replace a quote. |
| Vehicle tax | The amount that applies to that exact vehicle and registration | Do not infer tax from fuel type alone; use the vehicle-specific amount for the ownership period. |
| Servicing and repairs | Service schedule, records, condition, known work due and model-specific inspection findings | Costs depend on model and condition. The evidence does not establish a universal diesel maintenance premium. |
| Depreciation or resale | Likely value when you sell, using comparable age, mileage, condition and market context | A lower running cost can be outweighed if the car loses more value during your ownership. |
| Local emissions charges | Whether your regular journeys enter a charging area and whether the exact registration meets its rules | A charge can materially affect a driver who enters a relevant zone, but may not apply to another driver. |
Make the comparison auditable
Use one row per candidate and one column per cost category. For a straightforward ownership estimate, add the amount paid or financed, fuel over the period, insurance, tax, planned servicing, plausible repairs and any applicable charges; subtract the expected resale value at the end. Use the same mileage and period for both cars. This is an estimate rather than a universal total-cost figure, especially when future repairs and resale prices are uncertain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a used car, the condition of the individual vehicle may matter more than a general claim about petrol or diesel. Check service and repair records, mileage consistency, warning lights and any relevant inspection report. Include work already due, and do not treat a clean test result as proof that no repair will arise later.

Check clean-air rules before choosing a car
In applicable English Clean Air Zones, the general minimum standards for cars to avoid charges are Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol. Check the exact vehicle and the rules for the places you drive before purchase. A fuel label or registration year is not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s stated emissions standard against the relevant scheme.
Clean-air schemes are not uniform across the UK. England’s Clean Air Zone guidance is distinct from London’s ULEZ and rules in Scotland; do not assume the English standards apply to every place or that every area charges the same way. If you routinely travel through a particular zone, use the applicable official vehicle checker and include any likely charge in your ownership calculation. If you rarely or never enter a charging area, do not add an irrelevant charge to either car’s costs.
Diesel DPF: understand the ownership consideration
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps particulate matter from the exhaust. Government guidance explains that the filter needs to regenerate—burning off accumulated soot—and warns that incomplete regeneration can allow soot to build up and lead to expensive repairs. This is a specific condition and use-pattern consideration, not evidence that every diesel has high maintenance costs.
For a used diesel, ask about DPF-related warnings, repairs and maintenance history, and have the exact car assessed if its condition is uncertain. Consider whether the vehicle’s prior and expected use is compatible with its emissions equipment functioning as intended. Do not assume a DPF problem exists solely because a car is diesel, and do not assume a short inspection or a lack of a dashboard warning proves the system is trouble-free. Government DPF guidance was updated in 2013, so it supports the basic filter and regeneration explanation, not a current repair-price estimate or a claim about how often failures occur.
A practical decision process
- Set the ownership case. Decide how many years you expect to keep the car, your likely annual mileage and the kinds of trips you actually make.
- Choose comparable cars. Match vehicle class, age, condition, specification and price as closely as practical. A comparison between different-sized or differently equipped cars cannot isolate the effect of fuel type.
- Check eligibility for your routes. Verify each exact car against the emissions rules for any charging areas you regularly enter.
- Calculate fuel consistently. Use each model’s official combined figure, the same mileage and current local fuel prices, then test a less favourable consumption scenario.
- Gather ownership costs. Obtain comparable insurance quotes, the vehicle-specific tax amount, service and repair evidence, and a defensible estimate of resale value.
- Compare totals and uncertainty. Add the costs over the same period, subtract estimated resale value and show which inputs are estimates. If a small change in fuel price, mileage or repair assumptions reverses the result, treat the two options as close rather than declaring a definite winner.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer
- Using tank range as a proxy for economy. A larger tank can extend range without lowering the cost per mile. Compare consumption and fuel prices instead.
- Using one national or historical fuel price as a current household figure. HMRC’s September 2026 reference prices are for advisory company-car calculations; VCA notes regional and year-to-year price variation. Check local prices when making the decision.
- Comparing broad engine bands as though they were matched cars. HMRC’s averages are not a controlled petrol-versus-diesel model test.
- Assuming every diesel has the same repair risk or cost. The available evidence describes the DPF mechanism and a possible consequence of incomplete regeneration, not a universal maintenance premium.
- Ignoring journey location. A car that is economical on fuel may still incur a relevant clean-air charge on a regular route; a charge should not be assumed where no applicable zone is involved.
- Calling a break-even mileage without stating assumptions. It depends on the price difference, per-mile fuel difference, real mileage, ownership horizon and excluded costs. State those inputs or avoid a single threshold.
What can be concluded with confidence
The UK advisory figures effective from 1 September 2026 illustrate the trade-off: diesel has the higher listed price per litre and higher mean MPG in each broad engine-size band, while the advisory per-mile cost varies by band rather than identifying one universal winner. VCA’s official model figures provide a better baseline for actual candidates, but they remain controlled-test results and should be recalculated using current local prices and the driver’s expected mileage.
The cheapest car to own and run is therefore the one that comes out lower after the same-period comparison of acquisition and resale, fuel, insurance, tax, servicing and repairs, plus any charges that actually apply to the owner’s journeys. No universal petrol-versus-diesel total-cost statistic or representative maintenance premium establishes a winner across models.
