There is no universal winner. An electric car is usually the easiest choice when you can charge reliably at home or work and its usable range covers your routine. CNG can work well when a convenient station and a suitable factory-fitted or professionally assessed system are available. Petrol and diesel should be judged from the specific car’s real-world efficiency, current local prices, purchase cost, maintenance, and how long you will keep it.

Start with your commute, not the fuel label

A powertrain decision is a matching exercise. The same technology can be sensible for one driver and frustrating for another because cities, tariffs, traffic, parking and annual kilometres differ. Before comparing cars, write down:

  • Your one-way and round-trip distance, including detours.
  • Expected kilometres per year and the number of unusually long trips.
  • Your purchase budget and likely ownership period.
  • Whether your regular parking space has an electrical connection that can support charging.
  • The nearest reliable petrol, diesel and CNG stations, and their opening hours.
  • Your local electricity tariff and any time-of-use rules.
  • Whether your route or registration area has restrictions that affect a particular vehicle.
  • How strongly tailpipe, noise and wider lifecycle emissions influence the decision.

Use those inputs with matched vehicles. Comparing a small petrol hatchback with a large electric SUV, for example, tells you little about the energy cost of your actual alternatives.

Quick fit test: which option deserves a closer look?

Powertrain Usually worth investigating when… Check before buying
Electric You have dependable home or workplace charging, predictable daily kilometres and a vehicle whose usable range covers the routine with a margin. Dedicated parking, electrical capacity, installation permission, public fast-charger coverage, tariff and long-trip plans.
CNG A convenient CNG station lies on your normal route and the selected car’s storage, configuration and range suit your work and family needs. Station queues and reliability, boot/storage compromise, approved fitment and a competent technical assessment for any conversion.
Petrol You need broad refuelling access, a lower-complexity purchase choice, or a usage pattern that does not justify a more specialised fuel setup. Model-specific consumption, current petrol price, on-road price, service schedule and resale assumptions.
Diesel Your chosen model’s efficiency and purchase premium make sense for your kilometres and you regularly undertake the type of longer running for which it is designed. Actual price difference versus petrol, local rules, maintenance, service access and the car’s measured economy on your route.

This table is a screening tool, not a promise of lower cost or better reliability. A local calculation with comparable cars is the decision.

Build a fair running-cost comparison

1. Calculate energy cost for the same distance

For a liquid or gaseous fuel, use:

annual energy cost = (annual kilometres ÷ realistic kilometres per litre or kilogram) × local price per litre or kilogram

For an EV, use:

annual charging cost = annual kilometres × realistic kWh per kilometre × effective electricity tariff

“Realistic” means a figure appropriate to your traffic, speed, weather, air-conditioning use and load. A brochure or laboratory number can be a starting point, but do not treat it as a guaranteed commute result. Include charging losses if your tariff is measured at the electricity meter rather than at the battery.

2. Add ownership costs

Energy is only one line in the budget. Add the on-road purchase price, financing, scheduled service, tyres, insurance, taxes and expected repairs. Keep the ownership period explicit: a higher initial price may be viewed differently over two years than over eight. Use the same assumptions for every candidate and record whether each figure is a one-time cost, annual cost or uncertain estimate.

3. Use current local inputs

Petrol, diesel and CNG prices vary by location and can change frequently. Electricity cost depends on the state tariff, connection and charging time. Vehicle prices and equipment also vary by city and trim. Do not publish or rely on a universal “cheapest fuel” ranking without those values.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has a historical illustration using petrol at ₹86.95 per litre on 8 February 2021 and a Delhi home-charging tariff of ₹4.5 per kWh. It compares a cited Tigor petrol consumption claim with Tigor EV battery capacity; those assumptions are not a current price quote or a matched-model test. Treat the example as a demonstration of method, not as today’s answer: BEE Electric Mobility.

Electric cars: charging is the make-or-break requirement

Home and workplace charging

BEE identifies home and public charging as options. For a commuter, dependable overnight charging can be more valuable than a large headline range because it removes a separate refuelling trip. Confirm that your parking space is assigned, the building or landlord permits equipment, the cable route is safe, and the connection can support the charger. An electrician or installer should assess the sanctioned load, protective devices, earthing and meter arrangement for the specific property and vehicle.

A home charging station is a category, not a universal product. Connector, power rating, cable length, weather protection and installation requirements depend on the vehicle and property. Obtain the car maker’s specification and a site assessment before buying hardware; do not assume a socket, apartment parking bay or extension lead is suitable for continuous charging.

How long charging takes

BEE gives a general illustration: a roughly 30 kWh battery can take less than one hour to reach 80% on a 50 kW fast charger, while a 15 A slow or moderate plug can take around eight hours. These are illustrative conditions, not a promise for every current vehicle, charger, battery temperature or state of charge. The car’s onboard charger, the charger’s actual output and the site’s power sharing all affect the result.

Range planning

Compare usable range with your routine, not only the test-cycle number. Leave a margin for congestion, detours, rain, heat, passengers and battery reserve. For occasional intercity travel, map chargers on the route and identify a backup location. If you cannot charge at home or work and public chargers are sparse or occupied, the time and uncertainty can outweigh a favourable energy calculation.

Emissions scope

An EV has no exhaust pipe emitting during driving. BEE’s wording is precise: “Battery operated vehicles have zero tailpipe and noise emissions.” That does not mean zero lifecycle emissions. Electricity generation, vehicle manufacture, battery production, maintenance and end-of-life all matter. The result changes with the electricity mix and vehicle, so do not apply a single lifecycle percentage to every Indian commute. BEE’s mobility page and NITI Aayog’s general guidance explain the distinction: BEE Electric Mobility and NITI Aayog e-AMRIT.

CNG: lower fuel storage and a location-dependent advantage

Convenience comes before the spreadsheet

CNG only helps if you can obtain it without detours, long queues or unreliable opening hours. Plot stations against your home, workplace and common routes. Ask whether a station remains practical when you return late, travel on weekends or take a trip outside the city. Keep a petrol fallback in your planning where the vehicle has one.

Storage and vehicle configuration

The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) notes that CNG storage capacity is comparatively lower than petrol. The physical cylinder can reduce luggage flexibility, so inspect the actual boot or cargo area with the seats in the positions you use. Check the manufacturer’s stated range and refuelling procedure for the exact variant rather than assuming all CNG cars carry the same amount.

Converted petrol cars

Do not treat a conversion as a generic accessory. PPAC says a workshop familiar with CNG-kit fitment should ascertain the vehicle’s technical suitability. Ask for documentation, approved components, installation quality checks and local compliance requirements. A conversion that has not been technically assessed can create reliability, safety and regulatory problems. PPAC’s FAQ covers storage and dual-fuel conversion considerations: PPAC FAQs.

Petrol and diesel: compare the exact models

Why brochure economy is not your commute

BEE’s Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) overview covers petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG, hybrid and electric passenger vehicles below 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight. It says fuel consumption is measured under standard conditions at nationally accredited laboratories. That standardisation makes model comparisons possible, but a laboratory figure is not a promise for your traffic, gradients, temperature or driving style. Use independent, route-relevant evidence where available and keep the uncertainty visible.

For each petrol or diesel candidate, record the same items: certified consumption, a conservative real-world assumption, tank size, service intervals, on-road price and the price difference between otherwise comparable trims. Then apply your annual kilometres and local fuel prices. The CAFE overview is available from BEE: BEE CAFE.

When the diesel premium may or may not work

Diesel should not be selected solely because one litre may move a car farther in a test. Compare the extra purchase cost and maintenance assumptions with your annual distance and ownership period. If your use is mostly short, stop-start errands, a model’s intended operating pattern and local service requirements deserve particular scrutiny. If you drive long highway distances, include those routes in the realistic-consumption estimate rather than assuming a universal diesel advantage.

Petrol often offers the broadest station access and a simple baseline for comparison, but its result still depends on the car. A light, efficient petrol car can beat a heavier alternative on total cost, while a high-use commuter may value a different balance. Only your matched-car calculation can establish the outcome.

A repeatable decision process

  1. Measure the route. Record round-trip kilometres for a representative week, including traffic, school runs and errands.
  2. Set the horizon. Choose an ownership period and annual-kilometre estimate; create a low and high case if your travel varies.
  3. Shortlist comparable cars. Keep body size, seating, safety equipment and performance broadly equivalent before comparing powertrains.
  4. Verify access. Visit or call nearby CNG stations, test the proposed charging location and check public fast chargers along frequent long routes.
  5. Collect local prices. Enter current petrol, diesel and CNG prices and the applicable electricity tariff for the address where charging will occur.
  6. Estimate energy use. Use realistic consumption for the same route; label every assumption and include charging losses where relevant.
  7. Add non-energy costs. Include on-road price, finance, service, insurance, tyres, taxes and likely repairs for the full ownership period.
  8. Stress-test the choice. Recalculate with higher energy prices, lower efficiency, a missed charger, a station detour and one or two long trips.
  9. Choose the least fragile plan. Prefer the option that remains workable when one assumption is wrong, not merely the one with the lowest best-case spreadsheet number.

Common situations and sensible choices

Apartment resident with no assigned charger

Do not buy an EV on energy cost alone. First obtain written permission, identify a safe cable route and confirm electrical capacity. If those conditions cannot be secured, a petrol or CNG car with dependable local refuelling may be less disruptive. A diesel option still requires the same model-specific cost and service check.

House with secure parking and a predictable 40–80 km daily routine

An EV deserves priority in the shortlist when overnight charging is permitted and the vehicle’s usable range covers the routine. Check long-trip charging before signing a purchase agreement; predictable daily use does not remove holiday or emergency needs.

City commuter with a CNG station on the route

Compare a factory CNG variant with petrol and EV alternatives using the same vehicle class. Inspect cargo capacity, confirm station reliability and calculate the value of the fuel-price difference after the variant’s purchase premium and service costs.

High annual kilometres with frequent intercity travel

Include refuelling time, highway coverage, route length and luggage needs. Petrol, diesel, CNG and EV can each fit different routes; the decisive evidence is the local station or charger map and a realistic cost model, not a generic ranking.

What can change your answer after purchase?

  • A change of home or workplace can remove reliable charging or CNG access.
  • Electricity tariffs, fuel prices and charging rates can change; keep the calculation editable rather than treating it as permanent.
  • Battery or fuel-storage space affects luggage and passenger use, not only energy cost.
  • Local registration, route or parking rules may alter convenience and should be checked for the vehicle’s location.
  • A vehicle’s certified test result can differ materially from your route, so update assumptions after observing your own consumption.

Current subsidies, tax deductions and local restrictions are policy questions that require a check of the applicable state and date. Do not assume an incentive shown in an older article still applies or applies to every buyer.

The practical verdict

Choose an EV when charging is dependable, the routine fits its usable range and the full ownership calculation remains acceptable under less-than-perfect conditions. Choose CNG when a suitable, compliant vehicle and convenient stations solve your daily refuelling needs without an unacceptable storage compromise. Choose between petrol and diesel only after comparing specific cars with current local prices, realistic consumption, maintenance and the kilometres you will actually drive. The best commuter car is the one whose energy supply, range, cost and everyday logistics continue to work in your city—not the one attached to the most attractive fuel label.
