Camera-equipped smart glasses can give blind and low-vision people hands-free help reading signs, menus and labels, but the same cameras and microphones can record bystanders who do not know they are being filmed. The technology is useful, not automatically safe: buyers should evaluate recording indicators, data security, accessibility, local privacy law and venue rules before choosing a pair.

What smart glasses do for blind and low-vision users

Modern AI glasses resemble ordinary spectacles while combining cameras, microphones, speakers and an artificial-intelligence assistant. A wearer can ask questions, take photos or video, make calls, listen to music and request descriptions of the scene ahead. The assistant may identify objects, read printed text and answer questions about an image.

For blind users, the important difference is that the camera and audio feedback are mounted on the body rather than requiring a phone to be held. Graeme Innes, a blind user and former disability commissioner, said he uses the glasses constantly because being hands-free makes a “huge difference” to everyday life. Reported uses include:

  • Reading menus, medicine labels, packages and street signs aloud.
  • Checking credit-card numbers and other short printed details.
  • Describing surroundings while walking or travelling.
  • Helping a user identify objects, colours or text without asking another person for assistance.

Chris Edwards of Vision Australia said human support is “costly and impractical” for many routine tasks. That convenience explains why Meta has sold more than 7 million pairs worldwide, according to figures reported in 2026. IDC estimated that the company represented approximately 69% of the smart-glasses market in the first quarter of 2026.

Why people call them “pervert glasses”

The insult is aimed at the privacy risk, not at blind users. Smart glasses can look like conventional eyewear, so a person nearby may not realise that a camera is active. Reports describe users hiding or disabling recording indicators and posting pickup, prank or humiliating videos. In those situations, the person being filmed may have no practical way to notice, object or ask for deletion.

A University of Sydney team reviewed 350 public Instagram videos posted between 2023 and 2026. About 60% were classified as showing potential harassment, and 43% included abuse of women in the comments. Those are findings from a selected set of public videos, not a measurement of how often all smart-glasses users harass people.

Dr Fareed Kaviani of Monash University described the problem as a lack of meaningful consent: people may be unable both to know they are being filmed and to decline filming. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has warned that harms linked to covert recording are “real and already occurring.”

Can smart glasses record someone without consent?

Yes. A camera-equipped pair can capture a person in its field of view whenever recording is active. Whether that recording is lawful depends on the country, state or territory, the setting, the audio captured and what the owner does with the file. A café, school, workplace, hospital, public transport system or event may impose stricter rules than a public footpath.

Recording is only one part of the risk. A device can also collect voice commands, images and account data, then transmit information to services needed for its assistant or storage. The exact handling differs by model and software version, so buyers should read the manufacturer’s current privacy controls rather than assume that every pair works like another brand.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses: useful accessibility, unresolved consent questions

The best-known example is Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. They package the familiar eyewear form with cameras, microphones and an AI assistant, making them practical for visual descriptions, text reading, calls and navigation-related questions. Reported retail prices for Meta versions range from roughly $224 to $800, depending on model and configuration.

That accessibility does not settle the privacy debate. The glasses’ ordinary appearance can make recording less obvious, and public reporting has documented people using smart glasses for covert or humiliating videos. Meta says, “The people who use them and those around them need to trust them. That’s why we built privacy into our AI glasses from the ground up.” Trust still depends on whether an indicator is visible, whether software settings can be bypassed and how captured data is handled in the specific model and region.

Cheap glasses can add owner-security problems

ABC News tested two low-cost HeyCyan products priced at $60 and $110 in 2026. Its testing found serious security weaknesses, including unauthorised Bluetooth access and transfers of data to servers in Shenzhen. Those results show why a low price can involve more than reduced optical quality: an attacker may be able to connect to the device or gain access to information.

The findings apply to the tested products and should not automatically be attributed to Ray-Ban Meta or every other smart-glasses model. Before buying, check whether the vendor publishes security updates, explains where data is processed, protects Bluetooth pairing and provides a way to delete recordings and account data.

What privacy-by-design rules would change

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has recommended three controls:

  • A clear recording light or other signal that cannot be disabled, covered or obscured.
  • Automatic blurring of bystanders’ faces unless they have given informed consent.
  • No public facial-identification function that identifies members of the public.

Australian Greens senator David Shoebridge has proposed a 12-month pause on imports, with carve-outs for legitimate vision-impairment use. The proposal was reported as proposed legislation, not enacted law. Policies and laws can change, so users in Australia should check the current position before importing or using a device.

A practical buying and use checklist

For blind or low-vision buyers

  1. List the tasks you need: text reading, scene description, navigation prompts, calls or something else.
  2. Confirm that those functions work in your country, language and phone operating system.
  3. Ask how recording is indicated and whether the indicator can be disabled, covered or remotely triggered.
  4. Read the current privacy policy for camera, microphone, voice-command and cloud data, including deletion controls.
  5. Check Bluetooth security, software-update support, warranty service and prescription-lens compatibility.
  6. Try the glasses in a shop or through a returnable purchase; comfort, audio leakage and battery life affect daily accessibility.

For respectful everyday use

  • Do not record in bathrooms, changing rooms, medical consultations, classrooms or other restricted spaces.
  • Tell people when you are recording a conversation or close-up image where consent is expected.
  • Follow a venue’s no-camera rule even if the glasses look like ordinary spectacles.
  • Do not post identifiable footage of strangers, especially humiliating or sexualised material.

Should privacy-conscious readers buy them?

There is no single yes-or-no answer. For a blind user who needs hands-free reading and descriptions, the accessibility gain can be substantial and may reduce dependence on scarce human assistance. For a privacy-sensitive buyer, the purchase is reasonable only after checking the exact model’s indicator, controls, data practices and local law. A device that cannot give bystanders a reliable, visible way to know they are being recorded has a serious consent problem, regardless of how useful its AI assistant is.
