Choose Persona if you want a modern Japanese setting where school life, friendship, romance and character growth share the stage with supernatural mysteries. Choose mainline Shin Megami Tensei if your priority is recruiting demons, exploring a ruined world and deciding which competing values should shape its future.
Both are Atlus RPG series with supernatural themes, but their official descriptions point to different player fantasies. Persona places extraordinary events alongside ordinary life and follows young people growing through difficulty. Mainline Shin Megami Tensei starts from a world in crisis, makes demons central allies and asks you to confront world-scale ideological choices. Neither series is categorically better, and no official head-to-head difficulty or quality measure establishes that one is universally superior. The right choice depends on the experience you want first.

The short answer: decide by the fantasy you want to inhabit
Use this first-pass rule:
- Pick Persona when relationships and everyday context are as important to you as dungeon or story progression. Its series identity emphasizes modern Japanese city life, school, friendship, romance, occult incidents and young characters learning to face hardship.
- Pick Shin Megami Tensei when the central attraction is surviving a ruined world, talking with and recruiting demons, exploring danger and choosing among rival visions for the world’s fate.
These are series-level tendencies, not guarantees about every individual game. A particular Persona entry can vary in tone and structure, and an SMT game can include substantial character interaction. The clearest modern starting points are Persona 5 Royal for the Persona side and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance for the mainline SMT side.

Persona: ordinary life surrounding extraordinary problems
Atlus frames Persona around young people in recognizable modern Japanese settings. School and city life provide the everyday context; friendships and romance give the cast reasons to trust one another; occult events introduce the supernatural pressure; and the characters grow while dealing with difficulty. That combination is the defining appeal for readers who want an RPG to spend meaningful time on the people behind the conflict.
#1 Best Overall
Persona’s supernatural hook is an inner self manifesting in the form of inherited gods or demons. The result is a story in which personal development and supernatural power are connected. If you want the emotional context of a group—who they are, how they meet, and how they change—to sit alongside the larger mystery, Persona is the more direct fit.
Mainline Shin Megami Tensei: survival, demons and the fate of a broken world
Atlus’s broad description of mainline Shin Megami Tensei foregrounds a ruined, demon-overrun world. The protagonist talks with demons and recruits them as allies while confronting competing values and the consequences those values have for the protagonist and the world. Exploration and survival are not just scenery; they are part of the series’ central premise.
This focus does not mean SMT lacks human or companion moments. In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, for example, Demon Haunts include conversations with demons, friends and Aogami. The useful distinction is emphasis: SMT’s official series description leads with demons, ideology and world-scale fate rather than school routines and romance.

Choose Persona when relationships are part of the main appeal
You want school and city life to matter
Persona is the better match if a supernatural plot feels more compelling when it interrupts a recognizable routine. School, friendships, romance and modern Japanese city life are not incidental labels in Atlus’s description; they are the context in which its young characters encounter occult problems and mature. That makes Persona suitable for players who enjoy seeing how extraordinary pressure affects ordinary identity, commitments and relationships.
You follow characters as closely as the mystery
If your first question about a new RPG is “Who are these people, and how will they change?” Persona’s stated focus answers it directly. The series emphasizes young people meeting, confronting difficulties and growing. Choose it when the party’s bonds and personal development are a major reason to continue, rather than merely a way to reach the next plot event.
You want supernatural themes with an intimate starting point
Persona connects its supernatural premise to an inner self that appears as inherited gods or demons. That gives the occult material a personal entry point. You are not choosing between “character drama” and “supernatural RPG”; the appeal is their combination.
The safest example is Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is the concrete modern example to use when you want the Persona side of this comparison. It represents the series’ modern setting and relationship-forward framing while remaining an Atlus catalog title with broad platform availability. Its official page lists a Physical Standard edition as well as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions.

Choose Shin Megami Tensei when demons and ideological choices come first
You want a journey through a ruined world
Mainline SMT is the stronger fit if the setting itself is a survival problem. Atlus describes a world overrun by demons and shaped by ruin, rather than a normal city where occult incidents are layered onto daily life. In SMT V, the setting is Da’at, a post-apocalyptic landscape where the protagonist becomes a Nahobino and faces a conflict between light and dark.
You want demons to be active allies
The series’ signature interaction is direct: the protagonist talks with demons and recruits them. If building a group from supernatural beings is more exciting than following a fixed cast through everyday routines, SMT should move to the top of your list.
You want choices framed as competing values
SMT’s official description puts the protagonist’s and world’s fate in tension with rival values. This is the right series for players who want the central question to be “What should this broken world become?” rather than primarily “How will this group of friends grow together?”
Use Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance as the current example
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an expanded version of SMT V. It offers the original Canon of Creation and the new Canon of Vengeance. Atlus describes Vengeance as adding new locations, demons and choices, along with improvements to battle and field exploration. That makes it the most useful current example when you want the SMT premise plus the expanded content in one release.
How the two modern examples differ
Persona 5 Royal’s role in the comparison
Use Persona 5 Royal to represent an RPG whose supernatural events are understood through a modern social environment. The relevant buying question is not whether every Persona game has identical content; it is whether this kind of setting and relationship emphasis is what you want from your first entry. The official listing confirms a Physical Standard version and versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox consoles, Windows and Steam.
Vengeance’s two-path structure
Vengeance gives you a more specific choice inside the SMT example. Canon of Creation is the original story path, while Canon of Vengeance is the new path added in the expanded release. The official description also calls out new locations, demons and choices, plus battle and field-exploration improvements. If you are deciding between an older original release and the expanded edition, specify Vengeance so the buyer knows which version you mean.
Vengeance’s setting and protagonist
The story takes place in post-apocalyptic Da’at. The protagonist becomes a Nahobino and is drawn into a struggle between light and dark over the fate of the world. Those details make Vengeance a clear fit for the reader who wants a ruined-world journey and ideological conflict rather than a modern school-life frame.

Do not use difficulty stereotypes to make the decision
There is no directly comparable official difficulty measure proving that every SMT game is harder than every Persona game. Difficulty belongs to the individual title and its settings. Vengeance offers selectable difficulty and added accessibility features, while its developer feature describes a punishing Godborn mode that unlocks only after specific tasks. That combination means SMT Vengeance can support both adjustable entry points and an optional extreme challenge.

Before buying, check the difficulty options for the exact edition you plan to play.
SMT is not “Persona without social interaction”
That shortcut misrepresents both series. Persona’s official framing gives school life, friendship and romance unusually prominent billing, but SMT entries can still include meaningful conversations and relationships. Vengeance specifically includes Demon Haunts, where you can have special conversations with demons, friends and Aogami.
The accurate distinction is what each series foregrounds at the franchise level. Persona begins with modern life and young people growing through difficulty. Mainline SMT begins with a ruined world, demon conversation and recruitment, competing values and the fate of the world. An individual game can overlap those boundaries without erasing the different identities.
Which series fits your preferred story structure?
Choose Persona for a dual-context experience
- You want ordinary routines and supernatural incidents in the same story.
- You care about friendships, romance and the process of young characters growing.
- You prefer a mystery whose emotional stakes are tied to the cast’s personal lives.
- You want an Atlus RPG whose starting premise is an inner self manifesting as gods or demons.
Choose SMT for a world-first experience
- You want to explore a ruined, demon-overrun setting.
- You would rather talk with and recruit demons than begin with a school-centered group.
- You want choices presented as competing values with consequences for the world’s fate.
- You are interested in a post-apocalyptic setting such as Da’at and a protagonist who becomes a Nahobino.
Choose based on the first 30-second pitch
Imagine recommending the game to a friend. If your sentence naturally starts with “A group of young people in a modern Japanese city…” you are describing the Persona appeal. If it starts with “A protagonist travels through a ruined world, recruits demons and decides what its future should be…” you are describing SMT. The sentence that sounds more like the experience you want is the better starting point.
Platform, edition and purchase guidance
Persona 5 Royal
Atlus’s official Persona 5 Royal page lists a Physical Standard edition. The listed platforms are:
- Xbox Series X|S
- Xbox One
- Windows
- Steam
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch
For a physical search, use the platform in the query, such as Persona 5 Royal Nintendo Switch. Confirm the exact edition, region and current stock before purchasing; a platform listing does not guarantee that a particular retailer has inventory.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
The official Vengeance page lists Standard and Launch editions. Its listed platforms are:
- Nintendo Switch
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series X|S
- Windows
- Steam
Use a platform-specific query such as Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Nintendo Switch, then verify the precise edition, region and availability. If you are recommending the expanded game, write “Vengeance” explicitly rather than referring only to Shin Megami Tensei V. The original SMT V release was Switch-only, so omitting the subtitle can lead a reader to the wrong product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the official listings do and do not establish
The listings establish editions and platform choices. They do not establish a current price, retailer inventory, affiliate eligibility or a particular region’s stock. Those details can change, so treat them as purchase checks rather than permanent specifications.
What Vengeance adds, and how to interpret the 270-demon figure
In a June 4, 2024 PlayStation Blog feature, Atlus game director Shigeo Komori wrote: “SMT V: Vengeance introduces a multitude of new skills across 270 new and familiar demons, including powerful new Magatsuhi Skills.” The number describes the scope of that skills discussion across 270 new and familiar demons. It is not a claim that Vengeance adds 270 entirely new demons.
The same developer feature is useful for understanding the expanded release’s shape: Vengeance includes new skills, selectable difficulty, accessibility improvements, Demon Haunts and the punishing Godborn mode unlocked after specific tasks. These features make the edition more than a simple repackaging of the original path, but they do not turn it into a direct Persona-style social-life game.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify your setting preference. Choose the modern Japanese city and school-life frame for Persona, or the ruined Da’at-style journey for SMT.
- Identify your companion preference. Choose relationship-centered young characters for Persona, or demon conversation and recruitment for SMT.
- Identify your stakes. Choose occult problems connected to personal growth for Persona, or competing values and the world’s fate for SMT.
- Check the specific entry. Series descriptions are broad. Read the official page for the exact title, because individual games can differ.
- Check the edition and platform. For Persona, verify the Physical Standard version and your platform. For SMT, verify that the listing says Vengeance and whether it is Standard or Launch.
- Check regional availability. Confirm the retailer’s region, current stock and precise product name before paying.
Bottom line
Persona is right for you if relationships, school and city life, romance, character growth and supernatural mystery belong in the same RPG. Mainline Shin Megami Tensei is right for you if demon recruitment, exploration of a ruined world and choices about competing values are the stronger draw. Start with Persona 5 Royal for the first experience or Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance for the second, and choose the platform and edition that match your region.
