Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the broadest introduction to the series. Its Steam description combines the elements most people associate with Persona: building relationships, exploring modern Tokyo, crawling through dungeons, customizing a party and fighting with turn-based commands. Choose Persona 4 Golden instead if a small-town serial-murder mystery sounds more appealing, or begin with Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable if the Persona 3 premise is the one that attracts you. Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 5 Strikers make more sense as later choices for players who already like the Phantom Thieves.

The short answer: which Persona game should you play first?

For most newcomers buying a Persona game on Steam, Persona 5 Royal is the safest first pick. That is an editorial recommendation, not an official ATLUS-required order. The recommendation follows the way the official Steam listing presents the game: it puts social bonds, Tokyo exploration, dungeon crawling, party development and turn-based combat in one package.

There is no requirement to begin with the oldest available title. Each mainline game tells a largely self-contained story with a different cast and setting. Your preferred premise matters more than storefront release order.

  • Choose Persona 5 Royal for the most expansive modern-city version of the series formula.
  • Choose Persona 4 Golden for a rural coming-of-age story built around a serial-murder mystery.
  • Choose Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable if the Persona 3 setting and premise are what you specifically want.
  • Choose Persona 5 Tactica when grid-based tactical combat is more important to you than the standard turn-based RPG format.
  • Save Persona 5 Strikers for later consideration if you become attached to Persona 5’s Phantom Thieves and want another adventure with them.

What the Persona series is

ATLUS describes Persona as an RPG series set in modern-day Japan. Its stories follow teenagers balancing ordinary life, friendships and personal problems with supernatural events. Characters awaken as Persona-users and confront threats that exist beyond their everyday routines.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

That mixture explains why a Persona game is more than a conventional dungeon crawler. Time is divided between life in a school or community and dangerous excursions. Conversations and activities develop relationships; those relationships support character growth and help define the tone of the story. When you enter a dungeon, the emphasis shifts to exploration, weaknesses, Persona fusion or customization, resource management and turn-based battles.

The balance differs from game to game. Persona 5 Royal foregrounds Tokyo and the Phantom Thieves. Persona 4 Golden moves the action to rural Inaba and frames the adventure as a murder investigation. Persona 3 titles center on the Dark Hour premise. Persona 5 Tactica keeps the Phantom Thieves but changes the combat format to tactical, grid-based encounters.

Why Persona 5 Royal is the default recommendation

It represents the full modern Persona loop

The official Steam description presents Persona 5 Royal as a combination of social relationships, Tokyo life, dungeon crawling and turn-based combat. That makes it a useful first game for someone who does not yet know which part of Persona will matter most to them. You can spend time with the cast, explore a recognizable urban setting, plan dungeon runs and experiment with party abilities without committing to a narrower subgenre.

The game’s identity is also easy to understand from its premise. The Phantom Thieves are a group of young people who challenge corruption through supernatural means. Their group dynamic gives the story a clear central ensemble while the daily-life sections provide space for individual relationships.

What “Royal” means

ATLUS’s launch FAQ, written for the game’s original 2020 launch context, describes Royal as adding “an entirely new semester and new characters” compared with the original Persona 5. That explains why Royal is the relevant Steam starting point rather than treating the original release as a necessary prerequisite.

You do not need to play the original Persona 5 first to understand Royal. Royal is the version presented on Steam for players who want this story, and the additional material is integrated into that edition.

Difficulty can be adjusted for a story-first playthrough

On the official Persona 5 Royal website, ATLUS states: “The story content will not be affected by the level you choose, so we recommend SAFE or EASY mode for those who just want to enjoy the story.” If combat difficulty is a concern, those modes let you prioritize the narrative without changing the story content. Players who enjoy optimization can choose a higher setting instead.

When Persona 4 Golden is the better first game

The hook is a small-town mystery

Persona 4 Golden’s Steam listing places the story in rural Inaba and says it begins with a chain of serial murders. The contrast with Persona 5 Royal is immediate: instead of a large Tokyo setting and an established vigilante group, you investigate a disturbing mystery in a close-knit community while following a coming-of-age story.

Pick Persona 4 Golden first if your decision is driven by questions such as “Who is responsible?” or “What is happening in this town?” Its appeal comes from watching a group of teenagers build trust while uncovering the truth behind the murders. The setting is smaller, but the social focus remains central to the Persona formula.

Controller advice

The Persona 4 Golden Steam listing says the game is best experienced with a controller. Treat that as an optional setup recommendation rather than a universal requirement for every Persona title. Keyboard and mouse may work for your setup, but a standard PC game controller is worth considering if you prefer analog movement and gamepad controls.

Starting with Persona 3: Reload or Portable?

Both versions are available on Steam

The Steam Persona catalog lists both Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable. That means a reader attracted to Persona 3 does not have to begin with Persona 4 or Persona 5 simply because those games are often discussed first.

The available catalog information does not establish a definitive, universal winner between Reload and Portable. They are separate available versions, and the correct choice depends on the features, presentation and edition details shown on their current Steam pages.

How to choose responsibly

  1. Open the current Steam pages for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable in your region.
  2. Read the feature descriptions, screenshots, system requirements and user-facing edition information for both versions.
  3. Decide whether the presentation and included features of one listing fit your preferences better.
  4. Buy the version whose current description matches what you want; there is no evidence here that newcomers must purchase one before the other.

Persona 5 Tactica: choose it for tactical combat

Persona 5 Tactica keeps the Phantom Thieves but changes the central gameplay emphasis. ATLUS and Steam describe it as a tactical RPG with a new story featuring the Phantom Thieves. Battles are organized around grid-based movement, positioning and strategic turns rather than the standard free-form dungeon combat associated with Persona 5 Royal.

That makes Tactica a genre choice as much as a series choice. If you enjoy planning lines of attack, using cover or positioning units carefully, it may be the most appealing entry even if you have not played every other Persona game. If you are specifically seeking the social-simulation and dungeon structure of Royal, Tactica is not the closest match.

The available descriptions establish a new Phantom Thieves story but do not establish a universal prerequisite or an exact continuity order. Treat it as an optional follow-up or a tactical alternative, not as a mandatory chapter in a prescribed sequence.

Persona 5 Strikers: a later Phantom Thieves option

Persona 5 Strikers is listed in the Steam Persona catalog, and ATLUS’s catalog describes it as a new Phantom Thieves adventure. That makes it a natural suggestion for readers who finish—or simply become especially interested in—the Persona 5 cast.

The information available here does not prove a universal play-order requirement or provide an exact continuity guide. You can consider Strikers after choosing Persona 5 Royal because of the returning cast, but do not treat it as a required bridge before trying Persona 5 Tactica or another Persona title.

You want the Persona 3 premise

Choose between Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable by comparing their current Steam descriptions. The catalog confirms both are available, but the supplied material does not justify declaring one categorically superior.

You want tactical, grid-based battles

Choose Persona 5 Tactica. Its combat structure is the clearest differentiator among the listed games.

You mainly want more Phantom Thieves

Look at Persona 5 Strikers, and also consider Persona 5 Tactica if tactical combat appeals to you. Both are better understood as cast-driven follow-ups or alternatives than as the default introduction to the entire series.

Suggested starting paths on Steam

Path A: the conventional first-time route

  1. Start with Persona 5 Royal.
  2. If you want another story in the same character orbit, consider Persona 5 Strikers.
  3. If you want a different combat format with the Phantom Thieves, try Persona 5 Tactica.

This path follows your interest in the Persona 5 cast, not an officially mandated continuity order.

Path B: mystery first

  1. Start with Persona 4 Golden for the Inaba investigation.
  2. Move to Persona 5 Royal when you want a larger urban setting and the Phantom Thieves’ structure.

The games have different casts and premises, so this is a preference-based route rather than a required sequence.

Path C: Persona 3 first

  1. Compare the current Steam pages for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable.
  2. Buy the edition whose listed presentation and features suit you.
  3. Move to Persona 4 Golden or Persona 5 Royal when you want a different setting and cast.

Practical Steam setup checklist

  • Check the regional Steam listing: prices, discounts, bundles and review totals change over time.
  • Confirm your preferred edition: this is particularly important for Persona 3 Reload versus Persona 3 Portable.
  • Consider a controller: Persona 4 Golden’s listing specifically says the game is best experienced with one.
  • Set difficulty for your goal: ATLUS says SAFE or EASY in Persona 5 Royal preserves story content for players who mainly want the narrative.
  • Read system requirements before purchase: the current Steam page is the authoritative place for your region and current PC build.

Final decision

Buy Persona 5 Royal first unless another premise clearly wins you over. Choose Persona 4 Golden for the Inaba mystery, Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable for a Persona 3-focused start, and Persona 5 Tactica when tactical combat is your priority. Keep Persona 5 Strikers in mind when what you really want is another adventure with the Phantom Thieves.
