For most newcomers, start with Persona 5 Royal. It is the safer default if you want the most elaborate modern Persona introduction, with a story-heavy campaign, an additional semester and new characters. Choose Persona 3 Reload instead if its darker hidden-hour premise, earlier story, or status as a modern remake appeals to you more. Neither game requires you to have played another Persona title first, so the right choice is about the experience you want—not a required playing order.
The short answer: which game should you start with?
Persona 5 Royal is the default recommendation for a complete newcomer who wants a polished, expansive introduction to modern Persona. Atlus describes it as a story-heavy game and says Royal adds an entirely new semester and new characters that were not in the original Persona 5. Its premise follows teenagers who live dual lives as the Phantom Thieves, giving you a clear contemporary identity for the cast and conflict.
Persona 3 Reload is the better first choice when the premise matters more than choosing the newest-feeling entry. It remakes Persona 3, retaining that game’s scenario and characters as its foundation while refreshing graphics and usability and adding character side episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. The story begins with a transfer student at Gekkoukan High who awakens to Persona abilities, joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.) and confronts Shadows during the hidden “Shadow Hour.”

What Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal actually are
Persona 3 Reload is a remake
Persona 3 Reload is Atlus’s remake of Persona 3. SEGA’s official Japanese product information says the original scenario and characters remain the foundation. The remake updates the presentation and usability and adds side episodes for characters, additional dialogue and voiced scenes. That makes Reload a new presentation of an earlier Persona story, not a wholly unrelated spin-off.
The official premise is built around the “Shadow Hour,” a hidden period in which Shadows appear. A transfer student at Gekkoukan High discovers the ability to summon a Persona and becomes involved with S.E.E.S., the group investigating and confronting that threat. If you are attracted to a mystery structured around a concealed supernatural event and an organized school-based team, Reload gives you that setup immediately.
Persona 5 Royal is an expanded edition
Persona 5 Royal expands Persona 5 rather than remaking an earlier game. In Atlus’s launch FAQ, Communications Manager Ari Advincula describes it this way: “Persona 5 Royal is a story-heavy game that adds an entirely new semester and new characters never-before experienced in Persona 5.”

Royal is therefore the choice for readers who want an expanded version of the Phantom Thieves story, including content that was not present in the original release.
How the premises and tones differ
| Question | Persona 3 Reload | Persona 5 Royal |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of release is it? | A remake of Persona 3, with refreshed graphics and usability plus added character episodes, dialogue and voiced scenes. | An expanded Persona 5 experience with an entirely new semester and new characters. |
| Who is the central group? | The Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.). | The Phantom Thieves. |
| What supernatural conflict is emphasized? | S.E.E.S. confronts Shadows during the hidden “Shadow Hour.” | The official description emphasizes teenagers living dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. |
| What setting is explicitly identified? | Gekkoukan High and the hidden period known as the Shadow Hour. | A contemporary teenage setting in which the cast maintains ordinary and Phantom Thief identities. |
| What should attract you? | An earlier Persona story remade with modern presentation, a hidden-hour mystery and S.E.E.S.’s conflict with Shadows. | A story-heavy modern entry centered on the Phantom Thieves, with additional story content beyond the original game. |
This table describes the focus of each official premise; it is not a claim that one game has a universally better tone. “Darker” is a useful preference label for readers drawn to Reload’s stated premise, but the official material does not establish an age rating, psychological profile or objective ranking that would support broader claims about suitability.

Which game is better for a first-time Persona player?
Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the broadest modern introduction
Choose Royal first when several of these statements fit:
- You want a story-heavy game with an expanded edition’s additional semester and characters.
- The idea of teenagers maintaining ordinary lives while acting as the Phantom Thieves is more appealing than a hidden-hour investigation.
- You prefer to begin with a modern Persona entry rather than a remake of an earlier one.
- You want the title that can serve as the default recommendation without requiring knowledge of another game’s plot.
Royal’s expansion is especially relevant to a newcomer because you are not merely buying the original Persona 5 story. The edition itself is defined by added story content and characters, so the version decision is straightforward: choose Royal when it is available on your platform and you want the expanded experience.
Start with Persona 3 Reload if the premise or remake angle is your priority
Choose Reload first when these preferences describe you:
- You are specifically interested in the earlier Persona 3 story and want to experience it through a current remake.
- The hidden “Shadow Hour,” Shadows and S.E.E.S. are more compelling to you than the Phantom Thieves premise.
- You value a remake that preserves the original scenario and characters while adding refreshed presentation, usability and voiced material.
- You want to see how Persona 3’s story is presented in a modern release before trying another entry.
Reload is not a lesser first game because it is based on an earlier title. The official description presents it as a remake with the original scenario and characters as its foundation, so a new player can approach it as a complete story rather than as homework for another game.
Choose by the premise you can describe in one sentence
If you are still undecided, use this test: would you rather follow a transfer student joining S.E.E.S. to confront Shadows during a hidden hour, or teenagers leading dual lives as the Phantom Thieves? The answer identifies the game whose central idea is more likely to keep your attention. This is a preference-led recommendation, not a claim about quality or a report of comparative playtesting.

Does playing one first improve the other?
There is no required order established by the official descriptions. Each game introduces its own protagonist, group, supernatural conflict and setting. Starting with Royal does not require you to know Reload’s scenario, and starting with Reload does not require you to know the Phantom Thieves’ story.

Playing both eventually can still be rewarding because the two releases represent different approaches to the series: Reload is a remake that modernizes an earlier foundation, while Royal expands a Persona 5 release with a new semester and characters. Those differences are useful context when you move from one game to the other, but they are not prerequisites for understanding either title.
To protect your first playthrough, avoid detailed plot summaries and character guides before choosing. Atlus’s Royal FAQ asks creators to respect spoiler boundaries, and the game’s story-heavy design means that added story material is best encountered in the game itself.
How the version histories should affect your decision
Reload’s additions are presentation and character-focused
Reload’s documented changes address how the Persona 3 foundation is presented: refreshed graphics, modernized usability, character side episodes, additional dialogue and voiced scenes. If you are deciding whether a remake is the right entry point, those are the confirmed reasons to choose it. Do not assume that Reload automatically contains every element from every earlier Persona 3 edition; the available description establishes the remake’s foundation and additions, not a complete feature-by-feature history of all prior releases.
Royal’s additions are explicitly story-focused
Royal’s defining documented additions are an entirely new semester and new characters. That makes the edition choice particularly simple for newcomers: if you want the expanded Persona 5 story, Royal is the relevant version. The official statement does not provide a completion-time figure or a numerical measure of how much larger the game is, so avoid choosing it based on unverified runtime comparisons.

Platforms, release dates and regional edition checks
Availability can settle the decision before tone does. The two official listings cover overlapping but not identical platforms, and storefronts, physical products and release dates can vary by region.
| Game | Platforms or services listed by the official page | Edition and date details |
|---|---|---|
| Persona 3 Reload | Switch 2, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam. | SEGA’s Japanese product listing gives a release date of February 2, 2024 and a Switch 2 release date of October 23, 2025. Retail/package information on that page is Japan-specific. |
| Persona 5 Royal | Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. | Atlus’s official page lists standard physical and digital editions. The listing does not establish a single worldwide price or guarantee local stock. |
“Xbox Game Pass” is listed as an availability option alongside platform listings; access can depend on the applicable subscription catalog and region. The pages cited above are authoritative for their own listed markets, not a promise that every storefront has identical products at every date.
Use this platform checklist before buying
- Identify the exact device you will use: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Steam, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 where applicable.
- Open your local console or PC storefront and confirm that the product is the intended edition: Persona 3 Reload or Persona 5 Royal, not an older Persona 3 or Persona 5 listing.
- For a boxed copy, verify the region, platform, language information and whether the listing is new or used.
- For a digital copy or subscription catalog, check that the game is available in your account’s country before paying.
- Compare the edition shown on the retailer page with the official platform lists above; do not infer current price, stock or regional release status from an old announcement.
What is not established: playtime, difficulty and comparative scores
No reliable primary-source comparison of completion times was established for these two games. That means there is no defensible runtime number to use as a deciding factor here. Player reports can vary by route, pace and optional content, and quoting an unverified average would make the comparison appear more precise than the available evidence allows.
The same caution applies to difficulty rankings, dungeon-quality claims, audience-consensus scores and assertions that one title is objectively superior. The official materials establish each game’s premise, release type and added content; they do not provide a controlled comparison of those subjective or performance-based categories.

Mistake: treating Reload as a sequel to Royal
Reload is a remake of Persona 3, while Royal is an expanded Persona 5 experience. They are separate entry points with different protagonists and groups. Choose the premise you prefer instead of assuming a chronological order.

Mistake: buying the original version when you intended the expanded edition
Royal is the edition that adds the new semester and characters to Persona 5. Check the title carefully on the storefront so you do not accidentally purchase a different Persona 5 release when your goal is Royal’s expanded content.
Mistake: assuming every version detail is worldwide
The Reload platform and package information cited from SEGA is Japan-specific, and local storefronts can differ. Verify your country’s listing, especially for Switch 2 availability, physical stock and language or edition details.
Mistake: expecting a runtime answer the evidence cannot support
Neither official page supplies a reliable comparative completion-time figure. Treat playtime claims elsewhere as estimates rather than a guaranteed specification, and do not let an unsupported number decide between the games.
Mistake: spoiling the story before selecting a game
Because both games are story-led and Royal adds previously unseen story content, detailed summaries can remove the reason to play. Use the premise-level descriptions in this guide and avoid plot reveals, character endings or guides until you have chosen.
A practical decision path for newcomers
- Decide which premise wins. Pick the hidden Shadow Hour and S.E.E.S. if that mystery is your hook; pick the dual-life Phantom Thieves setup if that is more attractive.
- Decide whether version history matters. Choose Reload for a remake of an earlier story with refreshed presentation and added voiced material; choose Royal for an expanded Persona 5 story with a new semester and characters.
- Check your hardware and region. Use the official platform lists, then confirm the local storefront or retailer listing.
- Confirm the exact edition. Look for “Reload” or “Royal” in the product name and verify physical versus digital format.
- Commit without worrying about order. Neither title requires the other as a narrative prerequisite, so your first choice does not lock you out of understanding the second.
Final recommendation
Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the default modern introduction: a story-heavy Persona 5 release centered on the Phantom Thieves and expanded with an entirely new semester and characters. Start with Persona 3 Reload if the hidden Shadow Hour, S.E.E.S. and the opportunity to experience Persona 3 as a modern remake are the reasons you are interested. Both are legitimate first games; your preferred premise and the edition available in your region are the deciding factors.
