Stay warm before you try to find food. In permafrost country, wind, wet clothing, exposed skin and exhaustion can become life-threatening long before a person can successfully harvest anything. Put on dry insulating layers, cover your hands and face, get out of the wind and protect any carried food and fuel. Treat suspected hypothermia or serious frostbite as medical emergencies.

Food access is never guaranteed by the presence of permafrost. What is available depends on the exact region, season, weather, lawful access, local ecological knowledge and practical skill. A sound plan carries dependable provisions, uses local guidance and treats wild foods as conditional—not as an automatic emergency supply.

Make heat conservation your first survival task

Permafrost describes ground that has remained frozen for a long period. It does not mean the air is always below freezing, that travel is safe, or that food is easy to obtain. Arctic conditions vary sharply between coastal and inland areas, seasons and weather systems. Your first job is to slow heat loss and prevent a manageable problem from becoming an emergency.

Layer clothing and cover exposed skin

Use several clothing layers that you can adjust as your activity and weather change. Cover exposed skin, protect your head and face, and keep insulation dry. The National Weather Service’s cold-weather guidance specifically says, “Mittens are better than gloves.” Insulated winter mittens are therefore a sensible category of hand protection; that advice does not identify a particular brand or model.

Do not treat one fabric, a fixed number of layers or a temperature-based clothing formula as a universal guarantee. Wind, moisture, exertion and time outside can change your heat loss dramatically. Check your clothing frequently rather than waiting until you feel seriously cold.

Get out of the wind

Wind strips heat from the body and can make an otherwise tolerable temperature dangerous. Use a building, vehicle, tent, natural windbreak or other sound shelter that is available to you. A shelter that blocks wind is valuable even when it does not feel warm inside. Keep the entrance and sleeping area as dry as possible, and avoid damaging unstable snow, ice or ground while looking for cover.

Change out of wet clothing

Wet insulation loses effectiveness. Change into dry clothing as soon as practical, protect dry layers from precipitation and sweat, and manage exertion so that you do not soak your clothing while working. If you must move, pace yourself and pause in shelter before heavy sweating begins. Moisture management is part of staying warm, not a task to postpone until after food gathering.

Recognize and respond to hypothermia and frostbite

Hypothermia

The National Weather Service identifies a body temperature below 95°F as hypothermia and advises immediate medical attention. Move the person to a heated location if possible, remove wet clothing and warm the center of the body first. Treat this as an emergency rather than a condition to monitor casually while continuing a trip.

Arrange evacuation or professional medical help as soon as the situation permits. Keep handling gentle and continue protecting the person from wind and additional heat loss. If you are traveling with others, establish in advance who will call for help, operate communications equipment and manage shelter so that a deteriorating person is not left alone.

Frostbite

For suspected frostbite, move to a warm place. The National Weather Service advises using warm—not hot—water or body heat. Numb skin can burn easily, so do not press it against a stove, heater, fire or other intense direct heat. Severe frostbite needs medical care; arrange professional evaluation rather than relying on a field remedy.

Plan food around supplies, not optimism

Arctic subsistence demonstrates that people can obtain food from northern environments, but it does not make those foods reliably available to an unprepared visitor. NOAA describes traditional diets that include fish, seals, whales, caribou, berries and plants. People may move seasonally or establish camps near dependable food sources. Those practices combine place-specific knowledge, timing, equipment, community relationships and years of experience.

What determines whether wild food is available?

Potential source What controls access Why a visitor should be cautious
Fish Season, location, equipment, weather and local knowledge A nearby water body does not guarantee safe access or a catch.
Marine mammals Coastal geography, sea-ice conditions, timing, lawful access and community practice Changing ice and animal distribution can make activity hazardous and unreliable.
Caribou Migration, abundance, terrain, season and hunting skill Finding animals and legally harvesting them are separate challenges.
Berries and plants Season, local habitat, identification skill and weather Availability is seasonal, and incorrect identification can create a new emergency.

These categories explain why “find food in the Arctic” is not a single technique. The National Park Service reports that changes in sea ice, animal abundance and migration can make subsistence activities less safe or less reliable in Alaska. Those local findings should not be silently generalized to every permafrost region, but they illustrate the wider planning problem: environmental conditions can change the route, timing and reliability of a food source.

Carry reserves and conserve fuel

The historical Arctic Manual discusses carrying reserves, avoiding monotonous diets, cooking and storing food in cold conditions, and conserving fuel. Use those points as historical context rather than as current medical or food-safety rules. In particular, do not treat its emergency discussion of raw meat as permission to eat raw wild meat. Modern food-safety decisions require current local and medical guidance.

Fuel is part of your food plan. If cooking, melting snow or heating shelter consumes more fuel than expected, a food reserve that cannot be prepared may be of limited practical value. Protect fuel from moisture, track how much remains and set a point at which you stop searching and return to shelter or your planned route.

Understand what permafrost can—and cannot—do for storage

Frozen ground has been used for food storage in Alaska and Russia, but making a reliable underground store is difficult. The National Snow and Ice Data Center describes frozen ground as “as hard as concrete” when explaining why excavating an underground refrigerator is no small task. Digging can require substantial tools, time and local knowledge; it is not a quick emergency shelter project.

A storage cavity also needs protection from contamination, flooding, animals and temperature changes. Do not assume that any patch of frozen ground has a stable, usable temperature. Surface snow and ice conditions change seasonally even where deeper ground remains permafrost.

Thaw changes the storage calculation

Thawing permafrost can destabilize buildings and transportation infrastructure. The National Park Service documents roads affected by thaw in Alaska and reports that melting ice cellars can make traditional long-term food storage harder for some northern communities. A cellar that worked historically may no longer remain cold or structurally sound.

For planned storage, use a purpose-built facility or a method verified by people who understand the local ground, drainage and seasonal temperatures. Keep food in sealed, protected containers and maintain a backup supply that does not depend on one frozen cavity. Never excavate beneath a building, road or unstable bank.

Separate permafrost from seasonal snow and ice

Permafrost is long-term frozen ground; snow cover, river ice, lake ice and sea ice can change much faster. The word “permafrost” says nothing by itself about whether a route, crossing or ice surface is safe. The sources available for this topic do not provide route-specific travel guidance or sea-ice thickness rules, so obtain current local information before crossing any frozen water or traveling beyond established infrastructure.

Do not use a storage site as a travel landmark without checking its condition. Thaw, flooding, erosion and construction damage can alter ground that previously appeared stable. A local guide, community authority or trained expedition leader can provide information that a general map or old account cannot.

Account for a rapidly changing Arctic

NOAA’s Arctic Report Card 2025 states that October 2024 through September 2025 was the warmest Arctic surface-air-temperature period recorded since 1900. It also reports that the last 10 years were the 10 warmest on record in the Arctic. These are period-specific measurements, not a claim that every location had the same temperature or that one warm season eliminates cold danger.

NOAA links warming bottom waters, declining sea ice and rising chlorophyll in the Chukchi and northern Bering Seas with shifts in marine species, fisheries, food security and Indigenous subsistence practices. For a traveler, the practical implication is uncertainty: an old account of a camp, crossing, fishing location or ice cellar may no longer describe current conditions.

Choose a strategy using three practical tests

Strategy Immediate exposure reduction Food dependence Storage reliability
Carried or provisioned supplies Lets you remain sheltered instead of spending energy searching Depends on preparation, quantity and fuel Can be planned with containers and backup locations
Harvesting from local waters or land May require prolonged exposure and exertion Depends on local knowledge, lawful access, season and conditions Requires a safe way to cook or preserve what is obtained
Frozen-ground or ice-cellar storage Can reduce repeated trips when stable and properly managed Depends on prior preparation and a dependable cold environment Hard to construct and vulnerable to thaw, flooding and structural change

Use the option that reduces exposure and uncertainty, not the option that sounds most self-sufficient. If conditions worsen, return to carried supplies and shelter rather than extending a search for wild food.

Prepare before entering permafrost country

  1. Check current forecasts and warnings. Review the exact coastal or inland area, expected wind, precipitation and temperature changes. General advice cannot replace a local forecast.
  2. Confirm local knowledge and permissions. Ask trained local guides, community authorities or experienced expedition planners about routes, seasonal access, food practices, storage conditions and current hazards.
  3. Pack redundant warmth. Bring adjustable layers, exposed-skin coverage, dry clothing kept in waterproof protection and insulated winter mittens. Plan for a wet layer failure, not merely the average temperature.
  4. Carry food, fuel and a delay reserve. Include enough for a failed harvest attempt, slower travel or an unplanned night. Track fuel separately from food so cooking and heating needs remain visible.
  5. Set decision points. Decide when wind, wetness, injury, diminishing fuel or a missed check-in means stopping the search, returning to shelter or calling for help.
  6. Protect communication and navigation. Keep devices and essential information warm and dry, and tell a responsible person your route and return time.
  7. Recheck conditions during the trip. A route, ice edge, animal pattern or storage site can change after weather or thaw. Do not rely on a previous season’s observation.

Common mistakes that turn a cold trip into an emergency

  • Searching for food before blocking wind and changing wet clothing.
  • Assuming permafrost means stable ground, safe ice or naturally available food.
  • Relying on a single wild-food source without carried reserves.
  • Using direct high heat on numb skin or very hot water on frostbite.
  • Continuing to work until clothing is soaked with sweat.
  • Treating historical instructions as current medical or food-safety guidance.
  • Assuming an Alaska-specific storage or subsistence observation applies unchanged across the Arctic.
  • Ignoring thaw effects on roads, buildings, ice cellars and underground stores.

The safest approach is conservative: reduce exposure first, use dry insulation and wind protection, carry dependable food and fuel, and let current local information determine whether harvesting or travel is sensible. Wild resources and frozen ground can support northern communities under the right conditions, but neither removes the need for preparation, skill and timely medical help.
