Peppermint mocha creamer is an ingredient you add to brewed coffee. “Peppermint mocha coffee” can instead mean coffee beans or grounds sold with peppermint-mocha flavoring, or it can mean a finished drink made from coffee, milk and flavorings. Because the phrase is ambiguous, identify the product form first, then compare its label, serving size, ingredients and preparation instructions.
The short answer
A creamer and a coffee product do different jobs. Creamer is a flavored liquid added after coffee is brewed. A peppermint mocha flavored coffee is coffee sold already flavored, usually as grounds or beans, and is brewed like other packaged coffee. A prepared peppermint mocha is a recipe or café-style drink that combines brewed coffee with dairy or another milk, chocolate flavor and peppermint flavor.
Those three uses can sound similar on a shopping list, but they are not interchangeable products. A creamer label describes the creamer itself; a coffee label describes the coffee; and a recipe’s nutrition applies to the complete drink. The words “peppermint mocha” do not guarantee one universal formula.

Peppermint mocha creamer
Creamer is a flavoring and texture component. You pour a measured amount into coffee that has already been brewed. Starbucks describes its Peppermint Mocha Inspired Creamer as pairing cool peppermint and rich chocolate flavors with coffee. Its product copy says: “We crafted our Starbucks® Creamer with the heartwarming flavors of cool peppermint and rich chocolate to pair with our coffee for a festive holiday cup.”

The creamer is therefore not the coffee itself. It can contribute sweetness, fat, dairy ingredients or milk-derived ingredients, depending on the formula. Its nutrition panel normally uses a small serving such as one tablespoon, so the numbers describe the addition rather than the finished mug.
Peppermint mocha flavored coffee
A package labeled peppermint mocha coffee may contain coffee grounds or beans with peppermint-mocha flavoring. Starbucks lists Peppermint Mocha Flavored Coffee Ground as a related product on the same Coffee at Home page that describes its creamer. That listing establishes the product category, but the cited page does not provide a detailed ingredient or nutrition panel for the ground coffee.
When the coffee itself is flavored, you brew it using the package’s directions. Creamer is optional. Adding creamer to flavored coffee creates a combination of two products; it does not change the fact that the coffee and creamer have separate labels.

A prepared peppermint mocha drink
The phrase can also describe a finished beverage made from brewed coffee and several ingredients. A Splenda recipe, for example, combines strong brewed coffee, nonfat milk, Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer, unsweetened cocoa powder and peppermint extract. It makes four 10-ounce drinks and includes whipped topping and mint as garnish.
That recipe is a third category: it is not a bottle of creamer and not a bag of flavored grounds. Its reported 91 calories per serving apply to the complete recipe as written, including the stated ingredients and serving size.
Side-by-side comparison
| Product form | What is in the package or recipe | How you use it | What the nutrition label describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peppermint mocha creamer | A flavored liquid addition; the Starbucks example contains nonfat milk, sugar, heavy cream, buttermilk, high-oleic soybean oil, cocoa processed with alkali, natural flavor, salt and gellan gum. | Shake, measure and stir into brewed coffee. | The creamer serving, such as 1 tablespoon (15 mL), not an entire mug of coffee. |
| Peppermint mocha flavored ground coffee | Coffee sold with peppermint-mocha flavoring; Starbucks lists a ground-coffee product in this category. | Brew according to the coffee package directions. Creamer is optional. | The coffee serving shown on that coffee’s own label. The cited Starbucks page does not state a detailed panel for this product. |
| Prepared peppermint mocha drink | Brewed coffee plus milk, creamer, cocoa powder and peppermint extract in the Splenda example, with optional topping and mint garnish. | Prepare the recipe, then divide into four 10-ounce drinks. | The complete recipe serving; Splenda reports 91 calories per 10-ounce serving for its version. |
What is in the Starbucks creamer example?
The Starbucks Coffee at Home product page gives a concrete example of how a peppermint mocha creamer is formulated. Its ingredient list is nonfat milk, sugar, heavy cream, buttermilk, high-oleic soybean oil, cocoa processed with alkali, natural flavor, salt and gellan gum. The product contains milk.

How the Coffee mate example differs
Coffee mate’s cited liquid-creamer page lists 35 calories and 5 grams of total sugars per 1 tablespoon (15 mL). Its ingredient list begins with water, sugar and soybean oil and includes micellar casein, which the page describes as a milk derivative. The page uses the marketing descriptor “non-dairy,” while also declaring that the product contains a milk derivative.
That distinction matters if you avoid milk because of an allergy, medical advice or a personal dietary rule. “Non-dairy” on the front of a package should not automatically be interpreted as “contains no milk-derived ingredient.” Read the current allergen statement on the exact container.
Nutrition: compare servings before comparing products
The most common comparison error is placing a tablespoon of creamer beside a full prepared drink as though they were equivalent servings. They are not. A tablespoon is a small measured addition; a prepared drink may contain several ounces of coffee, milk, creamer, cocoa and toppings.
| Label example | Serving size | Calories | Total sugars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Peppermint Mocha Inspired Creamer | 1 tablespoon (15 mL) | 40 | 6 g |
| Coffee mate liquid creamer | 1 tablespoon (15 mL) | 35 | 5 g |
| Splenda prepared recipe | 1 serving of a four-serving recipe; each drink is 10 ounces | 91 | not stated on the cited recipe page |
If you use two tablespoons, the arithmetic from the cited creamer labels would be 80 calories and 12 grams of sugar for the Starbucks example, or 70 calories and 10 grams of sugar for the Coffee mate example. Those are calculated amounts based on doubling the stated tablespoon serving; they do not describe a standard mug or a different product.

For the flavored ground coffee, use the coffee package’s own serving information. The cited Starbucks related-product listing does not provide a detailed nutrition panel, so the creamer’s numbers must not be transferred to the coffee.
How to make each version
Using peppermint mocha creamer with ordinary coffee
- Brew your regular coffee.
- Shake the refrigerated creamer as directed on the Starbucks example’s package instructions.
- Measure the amount you want, starting with the label serving of 1 tablespoon (15 mL) if you are tracking nutrition.
- Pour the creamer into the coffee and stir.
- Keep the container refrigerated between 33°F and 45°F, do not freeze it, and follow the package’s opening guidance. The Starbucks example advises using it within 14 days of opening for best quality.
This method changes the finished coffee by adding the creamer’s ingredients and nutrition. The underlying coffee remains whatever coffee you brewed.
Brewing peppermint mocha flavored ground coffee
- Measure the ground coffee according to the package’s brewing directions.
- Use the recommended water amount and brewing method for that product.
- Brew the coffee.
- Taste or serve it as brewed; add a separate creamer only if you want an additional ingredient.
The cited Starbucks page confirms that Peppermint Mocha Flavored Coffee Ground is a related product, but it does not state its detailed ingredients, nutrition or brewing directions. Use that product’s own package for those details.

Preparing the Splenda-style peppermint mocha
The published Splenda recipe makes four 10-ounce drinks from:
- 3 cups brewed strong coffee
- 1½ cups nonfat milk
- ½ cup Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- Whipped topping and mint for garnish
Follow the recipe’s mixing and serving directions, then divide the completed beverage into four 10-ounce portions. Splenda reports 91 calories per serving for that recipe. Because the value is calculated for that exact ingredient list and portion, changing the milk, creamer, toppings or serving size changes the result.
Ingredients and allergens: what to check
Read the full label rather than relying on the product name. The Starbucks creamer example contains several milk ingredients, including nonfat milk, heavy cream and buttermilk, and declares milk. The Coffee mate example is marketed as non-dairy but includes micellar casein, identified as a milk derivative.

- Milk allergy: Check the allergen declaration and ingredient list on the exact package. A “non-dairy” descriptor does not by itself establish that there is no milk-derived ingredient.
- Dietary restrictions: Confirm the current formula, because ingredients and labeling can change.
- Sweetener and cocoa: Sugar and cocoa appear in the cited creamer examples, but another product may use a different sweetener or flavor system.
- Flavoring: Peppermint flavor may come from natural flavor, peppermint extract or another labeled flavor ingredient. The product label identifies which approach is used.
Manufacturers advise using the physical package for the latest ingredient and allergen information. Online product pages can be useful descriptions, but the package in your hand is the appropriate final check.

A refrigerated liquid creamer requires storage instructions that do not apply to a bag of ground coffee. For the Starbucks creamer example, the stated range is 33°F to 45°F, freezing is discouraged, and best quality is advised within 14 days after opening. Shake before use because the package specifically instructs you to do so.
Ground coffee follows the storage guidance printed on its own package. The cited material does not establish a particular storage temperature, opening window or shelf-life instruction for Starbucks Peppermint Mocha Flavored Coffee Ground, so do not borrow the creamer’s refrigeration rules for the coffee.

You already like your coffee and want a seasonal addition
Choose a creamer when you want to keep your existing coffee and add peppermint-mocha flavor after brewing. You can control the amount by the tablespoon and stop adding it without changing how the coffee was brewed.
You want the coffee itself to carry the flavor
Choose peppermint mocha flavored coffee when you prefer a packaged coffee product that is brewed as the coffee component. Look for the product’s own ingredient and nutrition panel; a related-product listing alone does not establish those details.

You need to manage sugar or calories
Start with the serving size printed on the exact label. The cited Starbucks and Coffee mate creamers differ even at the same 1-tablespoon measure: 40 versus 35 calories and 6 versus 5 grams of total sugars. A recipe serving cannot be compared directly until its portion and complete ingredient list are considered.
Common misunderstandings
“Peppermint mocha coffee” always means creamer added to coffee
No. In ordinary use, it can refer to flavored packaged coffee or to a finished drink. Product form resolves the ambiguity: inspect whether you are holding a creamer bottle, coffee grounds or a ready-to-drink product.
The creamer nutrition panel describes the whole mug
No. The Starbucks and Coffee mate values above describe 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of creamer. Add the coffee, milk, toppings or other ingredients separately when estimating a complete drink.
All peppermint mocha creamers have the same recipe
No. The two cited liquid-creamer examples already differ in their listed calories, sugars and ingredient descriptions. Formulas can also change, so use the current label for the product you purchased.
Non-dairy means free of milk ingredients
Not necessarily. The Coffee mate page calls its product non-dairy while declaring a milk derivative from micellar casein. Anyone avoiding milk-derived ingredients should read the allergen statement rather than relying on the marketing descriptor.
The Starbucks creamer figures can be used for Starbucks flavored coffee
No. Starbucks lists the flavored ground coffee as a separate related product, and the cited page does not provide its detailed panel. Keep each product’s nutrition and ingredient information tied to its own label.
A practical label-check checklist
- Identify the form: creamer, flavored coffee, concentrate, ready-to-drink beverage or recipe ingredient.
- Read the serving size before comparing calories or sugar.
- Record the exact calories and sugars for the amount you will actually use.
- Check the complete ingredient list, including milk derivatives and flavor ingredients.
- Read the allergen declaration on the package.
- Follow storage, shaking and after-opening instructions for that product.
- For a prepared drink, count every ingredient and use the finished serving size.
- Recheck the package at purchase because formulations, labels and availability can change.
Bottom line on the difference
Peppermint mocha creamer is a flavored addition to brewed coffee. Peppermint mocha flavored coffee is coffee sold with the flavor already incorporated into the coffee product. A prepared peppermint mocha is a separate drink assembled from brewed coffee and other ingredients. Compare the form first, then use the exact product’s ingredients, allergen statement, serving size, nutrition and storage instructions. That approach avoids treating a tablespoon of creamer, a serving of grounds and a 10-ounce recipe drink as if they were the same thing.
