The Pentax 6×7 paired the familiar layout of a 35mm SLR with a much larger 6×7 film frame. Introduced in 1969, it evolved through the 6×7 MLU, Pentax 67, and 67II, with changes to mirror control, electronics, and finder options. That history helps explain its lasting appeal, but available sources do not establish that it changed medium-format photography “forever” or measure how many photographers remain devoted to it.
Why did the Pentax 6×7 feel like an oversized 35mm SLR?
Asahi Optical designed the camera to feel familiar to photographers accustomed to 35mm SLRs: it has a right-hand shutter release, a film-wind lever, a focal-plane shutter, and interchangeable lenses. The resemblance is about layout and handling, not film size. The Pentax 6×7 is a medium-format camera that makes a substantially larger image than a 35mm camera.
David S Young’s history for Digital Camera World says the 6×7 image area is approximately 56 × 70 mm, about 4.5 times the area of a 35mm frame. Ricoh lists the 67II picture size as 55 × 70 mm, so those figures describe different sources and model specifications rather than one exact measurement.
The format also set the camera apart from medium-format systems built around a square 6×6 frame. Its rectangular 6×7 image suited photographers who wanted a larger negative in a composition closer to familiar rectangular formats.

What film does a Pentax 67 use?
Ricoh’s official 67II specification page lists 120 and 220 roll film. It specifies 10 exposures on a 120 roll and 21 on a 220 roll. These are the 67II’s stated capacities; check the manual for the specific body you own before loading film.
The 67II has a 55 × 70 mm picture size and a dual-bayonet lens mount. Ricoh lists smc PENTAX 67 and smc Takumar 67 lenses as applicable. The camera also accepts interchangeable finders, a distinction that matters because some exposure features depend on the finder fitted.
How did the Pentax 6×7 change through the 67II?
The system began with a prototype shown as the Pentax 220 at Photokina in 1966, according to Young’s history. The first production Pentax 6×7 reached the market in 1969. Its later versions changed particular aspects of operation rather than replacing the basic SLR-style, 6×7 concept.

What is the difference between the Pentax 6×7 and 67II?
The 67II is the later, more electronically featured version, but it is important to distinguish body features from finder-dependent ones. Ricoh specifies aperture-priority automatic exposure when the optional AE Pentaprism Finder 67II is fitted. With that finder, the camera offers multi-pattern, center-weighted, and spot metering. Do not assume those features are available with every finder and body combination.
Ricoh lists the 67II’s electronically controlled horizontal-run focal-plane cloth shutter at 1/1000 second to 30 seconds stepless in auto mode, and 1/1000 second to four seconds in manual mode, plus bulb. Its X-sync is 1/30 second. The specifications also list mirror lock-up.
With the AE Pentaprism Finder 67II fitted and batteries excluded, Ricoh gives the camera’s dimensions as 185.5 × 151 × 106 mm and weight as 1,660 g. That substantial size is part of the practical trade-off behind a camera designed around a much larger negative.

Does a Pentax 6×7 need a battery?
For the 67II, yes: Ricoh specifies two 3V CR-123A lithium batteries. Its stated battery-life estimate is approximately 500 rolls of 120 film or 250 rolls of 220 film. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a guarantee for an aged camera or old batteries. Confirm the required power source for other generations in their manuals rather than assuming the 67II specification applies to them.

The camera combines an SLR-style body and controls with a 6×7 image format, interchangeable lenses, and a focal-plane shutter. That combination produces a body far larger than a 35mm SLR. Ricoh’s 67II dimensions and weight—measured with the AE Pentaprism Finder and without batteries—make the scale concrete, although the exact handling depends on the finder and lens fitted.
What lenses are associated with the Pentax 67?
The best-known lens in Young’s history is the 105mm f/2.4, described there as the system’s famous standard lens. The article traces its design to a desire for a fast, reasonably compact lens with strong image quality on the larger negative. Young characterizes its view as somewhat narrower than a 90mm lens and notes its usefulness for portraits; that is an account of the lens’s perspective, not a rule that dictates how every portrait should be made.

Young reports that the system eventually included more than 40 lenses, ranging from a 35mm fisheye to a 1,000mm mirror lens. Ricoh’s 67II specifications confirm smc PENTAX 67 and smc Takumar 67 lenses as applicable. When considering a used lens, check its exact mount compatibility and condition rather than relying on a name alone.
Young also says the system’s lens coatings were upgraded to Asahi’s Super-Multi-Coat standard in 1971 and that the 105mm’s reputation grew with high-resolution film scans in the digital era. Those are historical claims made in the article, rather than figures established by Ricoh’s specification page.
Which Pentax 6×7 generation should you consider?
There is no universal “best” version: intended use, condition, finder configuration, and service history all matter. Young describes the original as rugged and reliable, while also noting early film-transport problems that, in the author’s view, would have been repaired or upgraded at the time. The same history cautions that the 67II’s additional electronics could make repairs more complicated if a component fails. These are the author’s judgments, not independent reliability or repair-cost measurements.

- Choose by the feature that matters: mirror lock-up distinguishes the 6×7 MLU, while the 67II’s exposure automation requires its optional AE finder.
- Check which finder is included and verify its functions; finder options affect what the camera can do.
- Inspect condition and service history. Young recommends seeing a candidate in person because the camera is larger than illustrations suggest.
Asahi Pentax’s downloads page hosts manuals and brochures and says it provides non-OEM service, repair, and restoration for the 6×7, 6x7MLU, 67, and 67II. This identifies a specialist service route, not a guarantee of availability in every location or of a particular repair outcome.
What the Pentax 6×7’s legacy can—and cannot—prove
The documented history supports a more specific legacy than the claim that the camera changed medium-format photography forever: the Pentax 6×7 brought a familiar SLR-style layout to a large rectangular medium-format frame, then developed through four generations over decades. Young reports that the 67II remained in production until 2009. The sources establish that chronology and the system’s design, but do not provide sales, market-share, or ownership data that would prove universal influence or quantify present-day enthusiasm.
