PennyMac Financial Services (NYSE: PFSI) reported $22 million in GAAP net income and diluted earnings per share of $0.41 for the second quarter of 2026. Its company-defined adjusted results were higher: adjusted net income of $74 million and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.39. The gap is central to understanding the quarter; neither figure should be used without identifying which measure it represents.

|---|---|
| Total net revenues | $497 million |

Why did PFSI earnings fall?
Management attributed the shortfall against expectations to higher interest rates during the quarter. Chairman and CEO David Spector said: “While our operational execution remained solid, our results fell short of expectations due to higher interest rates during the period. As a result, we are actively taking steps to realign our cost structure to enhance profitability.” This is management’s explanation and stated response, not an independent measure of how much rates contributed.

Rate movements matter to mortgage businesses through several channels: they can affect borrower demand and production economics, mortgage-servicing-rights valuations, prepayment expectations and hedging results. PFSI’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q supplies filing-level detail on servicing rights, loans and balance-sheet and cash-flow items. The reported headline alone does not isolate the contribution of each channel.

Did PFSI’s operating scale translate into profitability?
PFSI reported $34.9 billion of loan acquisitions and originations in unpaid principal balance (UPB) during Q2 and an owned servicing portfolio of $488 billion UPB at June 30, 2026. Yet its reported annualized return on equity was 2%, compared with 7% on an adjusted annualized basis. The divergence shows why production volume and servicing scale should be considered alongside earnings definitions and valuation effects, rather than treated as direct proxies for quarterly profit.
Production and servicing are related but distinct businesses. Production results depend on loan volume and margins; servicing can provide recurring fees while also exposing results to valuation changes and hedging. The 10-Q is the source for examining accounting and balance-sheet context, including mortgage servicing rights, loans eligible for repurchase, loans held for sale, leverage and cash from operating activities.
