Penguin Colony is an unusually bold Antarctic horror adventure. Set in 1939, it casts you as penguins investigating Nazi expeditions, ancient powers and the psychological collapse of the humans who have entered their home. Origame Digital’s game reimagines H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and draws on The Shadow Out of Time, while directly challenging the racism and colonial assumptions embedded in those stories.
What is Penguin Colony?
Penguin Colony is a PC exploration and psychological-horror game developed by Origame Digital and published by Fellow Traveller. Steam lists a planned release date of October 16, 2026, alongside a downloadable demo. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has also been reported for 2026, although its final timing should be confirmed against the latest platform announcement.
The game is not a conventional combat-focused horror title. Its central activities are movement, observation, switching between penguins and assembling clues from a strange Antarctic landscape. The result is closer to an investigative odyssey than a guided sequence of scares.

Two human forces are searching the ice for an impossibly ancient power. Nazi explorers want to extract and exploit it; the Kaitiaki, a guardian group, want to return it to slumber. Local penguins observe both expeditions and investigate the ruins, documents and consequences left behind.

The Nazi search is tied to relics that they believe will support Aryan race myths. They misinterpret Lovecraftian beings as an ancient Aryan king, turning a supernatural mystery into a story about fabricated history and appropriation. The game uses that mistake to examine how colonial myth-making invents a past and then uses it to justify taking land, objects and authority.
Developer Naphtali Faulkner, who is Ngāi Te Rangi, describes the perspective clearly: “The penguin is having a great time because it’s supposed to be there. Antarctica is its home. It’s these European guys who don’t belong there who are having the worst day of their lives.” That reversal is the game’s central tonal device: the penguin treats Antarctica as home while the intruding humans experience the nightmare.

How exploration and penguin abilities work
The world is divided into small, linear open-world areas. They offer freedom to investigate without becoming a huge sandbox, and the game generally expects you to read the environment rather than follow constant waypoint prompts.
Movement across the ice
- Hop: move over ordinary snow and broken terrain.
- Swim: cross water and navigate around ice floes.
- Belly-slide: use momentum on icy surfaces and approach some spaces differently from a walking character.
Switching between species
You can switch into nearby penguins, making the colony itself part of your traversal toolkit. Adélie, Emperor and rockhopper penguins are among the playable species. Rockhoppers can jump higher, chicks can squeeze through narrow gaps, and other penguins provide distinct movement options. Progress therefore comes from recognizing which body can reach the next ledge, tunnel or opening rather than from upgrading a single character.

Words instead of conventional treasure
Collectibles are words rather than coins, weapons or standard lore pickups. They sit within an environment containing snowfields, ice floes, abandoned human structures, stone labyrinths, obelisks and crevasses. Cryptic notes, photographs and soundbites add context, but the game leaves connections for you to make. Expect to revisit spaces mentally—and sometimes physically—when a new penguin ability changes what is accessible.
Is Penguin Colony scary?
Yes, but its horror is deliberately indirect. The cheerful penguin viewpoint creates an unsettling contrast with Nazi violence, alien revelations and human psychological collapse. The game draws from Lovecraft, The Thing and David Lynch, combining cosmic uncertainty with images and fragments that do not always explain themselves.

Faulkner argues that the most frightening element is not simply a monster but the assumptions white characters accept without question: “The scariest thing about Lovecraft is how it makes assumptions about things and all the white characters just nod along with it.” The game confronts Lovecraft’s racism instead of presenting his fiction as culturally neutral. Its horror comes partly from watching imperial certainty fail when confronted with a place and history the explorers do not control.
Visual style and atmosphere
Penguin Colony intentionally resembles an early-console game. The low-poly Antarctic environments have the hazy, uncanny quality of a hallucinated PlayStation 2 game. Tali Faulkner describes the target as “a souped up PS2 game,” combining PS2-era design with roughly PS3-level power.

That aesthetic is more than nostalgia. Simplified geometry makes ice fields, ruins and obelisks feel like unstable memories, while the limited visual detail encourages you to inspect silhouettes and environmental clues. The trade-off is technical roughness: hands-on coverage noted a small number of audio glitches and control bugs.

The Guardian called the project “an audacious, frequently brilliant retelling” and praised its unusual layering of space, time and narrative. The same hands-on account identifies four important expectations:

The most useful companion reading is Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, the novella the game most directly reimagines. Reading it is optional, but it can make the game’s references, reversals and critique easier to recognize.
