A payout marked pending has not, on that status alone, been shown to have failed or completed. It is an in-process label, and its precise meaning depends on the provider, payout type, and point in the payment lifecycle. Check the provider’s definition and any related reason, event, or arrival estimate before deciding what to do.
Does pending mean your payout failed?
No—not by itself. For example, PayPal defines Pending as a payout request that has been submitted and is being processed. PayPal lists Success and Failed as separate statuses. A pending record therefore is not the same thing as either a completed payout or a failed one.
That distinction is specific to the provider’s documented status system; it is not a universal technical rule. The same word can represent different stages in different payout flows, so use the exact status and context shown in your record rather than interpreting “pending” in isolation.

It is being processed
A provider may use pending while it processes a submitted request. PayPal’s definition describes this stage; it says the recipient receives the funds once processing succeeds. The record may later move to another status.

In Adyen’s Balance Platform flow, a payout can enter pending during manual review after reaching booked status. Adyen says processing continues if the review passes; if it fails, the payout can become failed with an internal-review type. It is scheduled for a future execution date
Adyen documents a separate case for scheduled bank payouts: the request can remain in received status with reason set to pending until its execution date. On that date, Adyen checks whether the balance is sufficient and whether any required approval has been given. Errors can cause the request to end as failed. The provider explains this flow in its guide to making a payout to a third-party bank account.

What does pending mean at different providers?

These examples are not interchangeable status definitions. In particular, Adyen’s scheduled-bank-payout example combines a status and a reason, while PayPal’s example uses a standalone Pending payout status.
How to check a pending payout
- Open the payout record. Note the provider, exact status, payout reference, amount, and date.
- Look for context alongside the status. Check for a reason code, review notice, execution date, tracking event, or estimated arrival information.
- Identify the payout flow. Determine whether it is scheduled, under review, instant, or non-instant. The provider’s documentation for that specific flow is more useful than a general definition of “pending.”
- Check for the next provider update. Depending on the integration, it may appear in the payout record, an API response, or a webhook. Follow the provider’s documented guidance if the record gives a specific action or an established ETA passes.
- Contact the provider when needed. Give support the payout reference, amount, and date so they can identify the transaction.
Why the next update matters
A payout can move on from a pending stage, but the possible outcomes depend on the flow. A review may pass or fail. A scheduled request may proceed on its execution date or fail checks. For some non-instant or wire payouts, a counterparty bank can return funds after the payout has already been sent; Adyen distinguishes that return from a failed instant transfer in its lifecycle documentation.

Updates may also apply at different levels. PayPal documents both batch-level webhook events, such as PAYMENT.PAYOUTSBATCH.PROCESSING and PAYMENT.PAYOUTSBATCH.SUCCESS, and item-level events for individual payout states. A batch update and an individual payout-item update are therefore not necessarily the same signal. PayPal lists these events in its payout webhook event names reference, last updated September 14, 2026. How long should a pending payout take?
There is no general waiting period established across providers by these status definitions. The official pages cited here do not establish a cross-provider average duration or a general probability that a pending payout will succeed. Use an ETA only when the provider documents one for the relevant payout flow; otherwise, check the record for a scheduled execution date or contact the provider if its instructions call for it.
