Peer-to-peer (P2P) is a way of organizing a network so participating computers or other nodes can communicate and share resources with one another. A peer may both request and provide resources, rather than having a separate server handle every request. P2P systems can still use central servers for some coordination, so the term does not mean “server-free.”
What does peer-to-peer mean?
In a P2P network, the participating devices or software nodes are called peers. They exchange information or resources as participants in the network. The Internet Architecture Board and IETF describe P2P systems as arrangements in which nodes can share resources and communicate directly, while also recognizing designs that combine peer-to-peer and centralized elements. See RFC 5694.
The name describes the relationship among participants, not a single technology or one specific kind of network. What peers share might be files, transaction data, or updates to a shared database.

In a conventional client-server arrangement, clients request a service or resource from a server, which provides it. MDN explains this distinction in its P2P glossary entry. In P2P systems, participants can take on both roles: a peer may request something from the network and provide something to other peers.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
This is a difference in how responsibilities are arranged, not a guarantee that every exchange happens directly between two devices. As RFC 5694 notes, some P2P systems use a central server to relay protocol messages or help coordinate activity. A system can therefore have peer-to-peer resource exchange alongside centralized components.
Examples of peer-to-peer networks
File sharing
Compatible P2P programs can let computers share digital files with one another. The Federal Trade Commission describes this model in its guide to P2P file sharing for businesses. It also warns that organizations should consider security risks when file-sharing software could expose sensitive information.

Bitcoin
Bitcoin’s full nodes collaborate in a P2P network to exchange blocks and transactions. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes how nodes communicate and relay this information.
Blockchains
A blockchain can be understood as a shared P2P database: nodes communicate, propose information, validate it, and maintain copies of the chain. The European Blockchain Observatory and Forum explains this process. The details vary among blockchain systems.

Does peer-to-peer mean there is no central server?
No. P2P describes how network participants relate and exchange resources; it does not rule out central coordination or servers. Some systems combine distributed peer activity with centralized services, and the exact arrangement depends on the system’s design. To classify a particular service, look at whether participants can both provide and request resources, whether exchanges are direct or mediated, and what information or resources are shared.

- Check which files or folders the software makes available to other participants.
- Consider whether shared material could include confidential or sensitive information, especially on work devices.
- Use only file-sharing software and networks you understand and are authorized to access.
The FTC’s business guide highlights the risk that P2P file-sharing software may expose sensitive information. That warning concerns file sharing; it should not be taken to mean every P2P system has the same risks or works the same way.
