PEEK fasteners are screws, bolts, nuts and other components made from polyether ether ketone, a high-performance thermoplastic. They can suit applications that need heat or chemical resistance, electrical insulation, corrosion resistance or lower weight than metal—but the right choice depends on the exact grade, fastener design, load and service conditions. A resin strength or heat figure alone does not establish a safe limit for an assembled joint.
What are PEEK fasteners?
PEEK is an engineering thermoplastic that can be molded or machined into fastening components. Supplier catalogs list forms such as hex-head and socket-head screws and bolts, as well as nuts. PEEK is not one uniform fastener material: unfilled resin and glass-fiber- or carbon-fiber-reinforced grades have different properties.
Manufacturers identify uses in chemical plants, pumps, semiconductor and printed-circuit-board production equipment, metal surface treatment, transformers, and electrical and electronic equipment. These examples describe applications, not a guarantee that a PEEK fastener is suitable for every component or environment in those industries. Published strength figures vary with the grade and test method. The following are manufacturer-reported tensile-strength values for material or resin grades, not allowable stresses or rated loads for a particular screw.

Reinforcement changes the material
Kureha’s comparison also reports tensile elongation of 80% for unfilled PEEK, 4% for PEEK/GF30 and 5% for PEEK/CF30. Alongside the different tensile strengths, these values illustrate why reinforced and unfilled grades are not interchangeable. Confirm that a product’s grade matches the properties used in the design.

Material strength is not a fastener rating
A finished fastener’s capacity depends on more than resin tensile strength. Size, thread, head form, manufacturing route, installation, load direction and joint design all matter. Junhua provides a torque table for natural-color PEEK across M4 to M16, but labels the entries as ultimate breaking values and advises a safety margin. They are not recommended installation torques. Request product-specific engineering data rather than converting a resin tensile figure into a safe joint load.

NBK gives 260°C as a resin heat-resistance value, but this is not a universal operating limit for a PEEK fastener or assembled joint. NBK cautions that a product’s operating temperature changes with performance conditions, including tightening torque. Check the supplier’s guidance for the specific fastener and evaluate the full duty cycle, including the temperatures and loads experienced in service. NBK’s product information states this qualification alongside its resin value.

Is PEEK resistant to chemicals?
PEEK is used in chemical environments, but “chemical resistant” does not mean resistant to every chemical under every condition. NBK lists concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid as exceptions to its broad resistance statement. Junhua also cautions that acid and alkali resistance varies with conditions and recommends assessing performance under actual use conditions. NBK and Junhua both provide supplier-level guidance, not a substitute for checking the exact exposure.
For a selection decision, identify the chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure duration and any cleaning or process cycles. Where compatibility is uncertain, obtain grade-specific advice and test under conditions representative of the application.

When might PEEK be a useful fastener material?
Supplier examples point to applications where a combination of material characteristics can be useful: chemical processing, pumps, electronics manufacturing and electrical equipment. Depending on grade and design, PEEK may offer heat and chemical resistance, electrical insulation, corrosion resistance or lower weight than metal. Those benefits are application-dependent; the available product information does not establish that PEEK is categorically better than metal.
- Process equipment: consider it where chemical exposure or corrosion is a concern, after verifying the exact chemical conditions.
- Electronics and electrical equipment: consider whether insulation is required and confirm the product grade and design meet the application’s needs.
- Weight-sensitive assemblies: compare the completed fastening solution, not just the raw material, with the alternatives.
- Hot service: evaluate actual fastener and joint limits rather than relying on a resin temperature figure.
How to choose a PEEK fastener
- Define the joint: record the required load, load direction, fastener size, thread, head style and mating materials. Do not use a resin tensile value as the joint’s allowable load.
- Identify the exact material grade: distinguish unfilled PEEK from glass-fiber- or carbon-fiber-reinforced grades, and ask for the product’s material designation and relevant test data.
- Map the complete temperature cycle: include operating, start-up, shutdown and cleaning conditions, then confirm product-specific limits with the supplier.
- Describe chemical exposure: provide the chemical identity, concentration, temperature and duration. Seek confirmation or conduct a representative compatibility test where needed.
- Confirm installation guidance: use torque or assembly limits for the exact fastener. Do not treat an ultimate breaking torque as an installation recommendation.
- Check secondary requirements: consider insulation or conductivity, corrosion, wear, weight and the consequences of fastener failure.
