Verdict: The Peak Performance Ridge HIPE Ace looks like a capable, layer-friendly shell for wet-weather hiking and skiing, but whether it is the right buy depends on the exact version. T3 reviewer Pat Kinsella reported that the jacket he tried kept out wind and rain, while also criticizing its lack of pit zips. Peak Performance’s official page for a Ridge Ace Ski variant, however, lists zippered front-facing ventilation. Check the model name and SKU before assuming those features match.
What the Ridge jacket was like on the trail
In a review published August 20, 2026, T3 reviewer Pat Kinsella said he wore the Ridge on dog walks along the South West Coast, while camping, and on hill hikes in Scotland. He reported that it kept wind and rain out in the showers and downpours he encountered. That is a reviewer’s experience, not a controlled waterproofness test; he also noted that he had not faced the most severe rain during the review period.
Kinsella praised the relaxed fit for accommodating layers, the hood’s peak and RECCO reflector, the large pockets, the zippers, and the soft chin guard. He found the two-way main zipper could release some heat, but said the version he tested lacked pit zips and was harder to ventilate during rain. He also questioned whether the shoulders were reinforced against backpack-harness abrasion and found the color selection limited. Those are observations about the reviewed jacket, not guarantees about every Ridge model.

The name “Ridge” covers variants with differences in fabric and ventilation. The figures below come from the cited product pages and review; they are manufacturer specifications or review-listed details, not independent comparative test results.

The apparent ventilation mismatch matters: a review of one Ridge version cannot establish that another version has the same vents. Before buying, compare the full product name, gendered variant where applicable, and SKU with the retailer’s listing. The official men’s Ridge Ace Ski page also says that garment is made without intentionally added PFAS; that is the brand’s formulation statement for the listed product.
Does it offer enough protection?
Peak Performance describes its HIPE ACE shell range as rated at 20,000 mm waterproofness and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathability. Those numbers are useful for comparing the brand’s stated specifications, but they do not prove how comfortable a jacket will feel during a particular climb or how it will perform in every storm. The T3 reviewer’s positive account of wind and rain protection is encouraging, with the important limitation that he did not encounter the most severe rain.

For a shell, weather protection is only part of the decision. If you work hard uphill, ventilation and layering comfort can matter as much as a high stated rating. A relaxed fit can make room for insulating layers, while a lack of pit zips may make it harder to dump heat without opening the front in wet weather. Confirm the ventilation arrangement on the precise Ridge variant you are considering.

Ridge HIPE ACE or Treeline HIPE?
Peak Performance’s product-family information gives standard HIPE a minimum rating of 10,000 mm waterproofness and 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability, compared with 20,000 mm and 20,000 g/m²/24h for HIPE ACE. A recent T3 review characterizes the Treeline HIPE 2.5L as a lighter-duty shell for casual hiking rather than the harshest mountain conditions.

The available material does not establish comparable weights, prices, fit, or vent layouts for the two jackets, so those are worth checking on the current product listings rather than inferring from the model names. Choose the Treeline if your use is mainly casual hiking and you want the lighter-duty option described in the review; consider the Ridge if its higher stated rating and features suit your conditions, after confirming fit and ventilation.

Peak Performance’s men’s Ridge Ace Ski page showed a Swedish regional price of 6,500 SEK and a waitlist notice when indexed; that does not establish current stock or pricing elsewhere.

Peak Performance’s listed care instructions for the men’s Ridge Ace Ski include a delicate 40°C machine wash with liquid detergent, a double rinse, no fabric softener, and low tumble drying or flat drying in shade. The brand says ironing or tumble drying after washing helps maintain the water-repellent treatment. Follow the care label on the exact garment, since instructions can differ by model.

Who should consider it?
- Consider the Ridge if you want a shell with a relaxed cut for layers and its 20,000/20,000 manufacturer rating suits your intended use.
- Inspect the ventilation first if you hike hard, tend to overheat, or need to manage warmth without opening the jacket in rain. The reviewed version and the official ski variant do not have identical reported ventilation details.
- Look at the Treeline HIPE instead if your need is a lighter-duty shell for casual hiking and the lower standard-HIPE rating is adequate for your conditions.
- Verify the exact listing for price, current stock, fit, fabric, weight, and shoulder reinforcement; those details should not be assumed to apply across the Ridge family.
