PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a purified DNA-fragment ingredient used in some medical applications and topical skincare. Its proposed repair biology is plausible, but evidence from injections, wound-care products, or procedure-assisted treatments does not prove that an ordinary leave-on serum produces the same effects through intact skin. Treat topical PDRN as an emerging cosmetic ingredient with uncertain standalone benefits, not as an at-home substitute for a clinical treatment.
What is PDRN in skincare?
Polydeoxyribonucleotide, usually shortened to PDRN, consists of purified DNA fragments. Salmonid sources are common in the clinical literature, which is why marketing often calls it “salmon DNA.” That nickname is incomplete, however: it does not identify the source, purification method, molecular profile, concentration, or finished formula in a particular cream or serum.
PDRN is related to, but not identical with, polynucleotides (PN). Both are made from nucleic-acid chains and are discussed together in aesthetic medicine, yet a study of topical PN is not automatically evidence for a PDRN serum. Always check the ingredient declaration and the formulation tested in any study before transferring a claim to a retail product.
Why scientists are interested in it
A 2025 narrative review describes two main biological explanations for PDRN’s proposed effects. First, fragments may interact with adenosine A2A receptors, signaling pathways involved in inflammation and tissue repair. Second, cells may use the fragments through nucleotide-salvage pathways when building or repairing genetic material. Those mechanisms help explain why PDRN has been investigated in wound healing and other dermatologic applications.

A mechanism is not the same as a proven cosmetic result. Laboratory or clinical findings obtained after an injection, in a wound-care preparation, or alongside a procedure cannot be assumed to occur when a product is spread on unbroken skin. The review itself is a narrative synthesis rather than a formal pooled analysis and calls for larger clinical trials.
Is PDRN actually salmon DNA?
Sometimes, but not always. Salmonid-derived material is common in published PDRN work, and “salmon DNA” is a familiar consumer shorthand. Other sources and manufacturing processes may be used. The only reliable way to know what a product contains is to read its ingredient information and the manufacturer’s documentation.
Source matters for people with fish allergies or other sensitivities. Available sources do not establish an allergy rate or quantify an individual’s risk, and they do not support the claim that every PDRN product is fish-derived. If you have a serious fish allergy, ask a pharmacist or clinician to review the exact product rather than relying on a front-label phrase.

Does a PDRN serum work the same way as an injection?
No evidence currently justifies treating the two routes as equivalent. The stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, is an effective barrier. In a September 30, 2026 interview with the Los Angeles Times, dermatologist and geneticist Macrene Alexiades highlighted the molecular-size and barrier issues involved in getting PDRN through intact skin. She said that a topical product may hydrate and support the barrier, while the other effects associated with PDRN are observed when it is administered by injection.
Her comments are an expert opinion reported by that article, not a universal consensus. They do provide a useful test for evaluating advertising: a product that promises “regeneration” should show human evidence for that exact finished formula, applied by that exact route, rather than borrowing results from a different intervention.
| Option | How it is delivered | What the evidence can establish | How to interpret expectations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topical PDRN serum or cream | Leave-on application to intact skin | Only product-specific human testing can establish a benefit for that formula | Consider modest cosmetic support, with uncertain standalone effects |
| Injection | Clinician-administered delivery into tissue | Clinical studies of the injected formulation and protocol | Not a dosing or efficacy guide for an over-the-counter serum |
| Procedure-assisted topical use | Applied with microneedling, radiofrequency, or another procedure | Evidence applies to the combined procedure and product | Results cannot be separated from the procedure or transferred to home use |
| Wound-care preparation | Use on a specific wound under medical direction | Evidence for that preparation, indication, and care setting | Not evidence for routine cosmetic use on healthy skin |
What should you expect from topical PDRN?
Potentially realistic expectations
- Added hydration or a temporary smoother feel from the overall serum or cream base.
- Barrier-support claims that may depend as much on humectants, emollients, occlusives, and other ingredients as on PDRN.
- A cosmetic product that fits into a normal skin-care routine, provided the full formula agrees with your skin.
Claims that need stronger proof
- “Regenerates” skin or reverses biological aging.
- Repairs scars, replaces professional wound care, or reliably rebuilds damaged tissue.
- Produces the same result as an injectable treatment.
- Works on a guaranteed schedule, such as a specified number of days or weeks.
There is no robust basis for promising a predictable transformation, universal response, or fixed timeline from an over-the-counter PDRN product. A finished-product trial would need to identify the formula, application method, comparison group, participants, follow-up period, and outcome measurements. Ingredient-level plausibility alone cannot fill those gaps.

Alexiades also told the Los Angeles Times that the word “regenerative” on a topical product is particularly overhyped because it implies a biological result that most such products have not demonstrated on skin. That is a warning about the claim, not proof that every topical formula is ineffective.

Clinical and laboratory rationale
The 2025 narrative review surveys proposed mechanisms and dermatologic uses, including wound healing and aesthetic applications. It is useful for understanding why clinicians are interested in PDRN, but it does not prove that a retail serum works. The review calls for larger, better-designed trials.
Professional consensus
The Association of Cutaneous Surgeons of India task force describes PN/PDRN publications as variable in design, with many case series and small randomized studies. It notes limited follow-up, absent long-term evaluation, and does not recommend routine use of the modality. This is guidance from a professional task force in a particular jurisdiction, not a universal legal ruling about every product worldwide.

The 29-person procedure study
A 2026 systematic-review search summary identifies a 2022 randomized study by Yogya and colleagues involving 29 women. Participants received radiofrequency microneedling with topical PN or the procedure with saline. Because the intervention combined a procedure with PN, it does not establish that an ordinary PDRN serum used alone works. The indexed summary is limited, so detailed efficacy claims should not be built on it.
What is still missing
- Large, independently conducted trials of named retail PDRN formulas.
- Clear measurements of how much intact skin absorbs from a leave-on product.
- Head-to-head comparisons between topical PDRN, an appropriate vehicle without PDRN, and established skin-care ingredients.
- Long-term safety and effectiveness data for routine cosmetic use.
How to evaluate a PDRN serum or cream
- Identify the exact ingredient. Look for PDRN, polydeoxyribonucleotide, PN, or another clearly defined nucleic-acid ingredient in the full ingredient information. “Salmon DNA” alone is a marketing description, not a complete specification.
- Separate route from result. Ask whether any cited study used a serum on intact skin, an injection, wound care, microneedling, radiofrequency, or another procedure. Keep the conclusion within that route.
- Check for finished-product evidence. A study of a different concentration, manufacturer, vehicle, or delivery system does not validate the product in your hand.
- Read the rest of the formula. Preservatives, fragrance, acids, retinoids, exfoliants, and other ingredients may determine whether the product irritates or suits your skin. PDRN does not make an otherwise unsuitable formula appropriate.
- Be cautious with absolute language. “Regenerative,” “scar-repairing,” or “injectable results at home” are claims that require unusually strong, route-matched evidence.
- Follow the label rather than an injection protocol. There is no validated consumer dosing schedule established by the cited evidence. Do not improvise frequency, combine it with a procedure, or apply it to a wound unless a qualified clinician tells you to do so.
- Stop if your skin reacts. Persistent burning, swelling, rash, blistering, or worsening irritation warrants discontinuing the product and seeking medical advice.
Safety and regulatory context
The professional consensus source reports that PDRN has generally been well tolerated in published studies, while emphasizing small samples, short follow-up, theoretical concerns, and the lack of long-term evaluation. “Generally well tolerated” is not a guarantee for a particular person or formula.
That consensus also states that PN and PDRN are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for any indications. This statement concerns the clinical modality discussed by the task force; it is not a complete regulatory review of every cosmetic product or every country. Cosmetic ingredients, injectable products, and medical devices can be governed differently, so check the rules and labeling requirements where you live.

An ingredient’s presence in a cosmetic does not establish that the finished product is safe, effective, or approved to treat a disease. Injections and procedure-assisted applications require an appropriately qualified clinician, sterile technique, patient screening, and jurisdiction-specific oversight. A home serum is a different risk and evidence category, but it should not be used as wound treatment or as a substitute for medical care.
Topical PDRN versus a clinician-administered treatment
The choice is not simply between a “weak” and “strong” version of the same product. It is a choice between different interventions.
- Delivery: a serum remains on the surface of intact skin; a clinician-administered treatment places material through or beneath the barrier.
- Evidence match: cosmetic claims need trials of the finished cosmetic, while clinical claims rely on studies of a specified medical formulation and protocol.
- Outcome: topical use is best framed as a cosmetic experiment with uncertain benefit; a procedure may be intended for a defined medical or aesthetic indication.
- Oversight and risk: home use involves normal cosmetic precautions, while injections and procedures require professional assessment and sterile practice.
- Transparency: a full ingredient list and manufacturer information are more useful than a broad “salmon DNA” slogan.
No comparative head-to-head trials establish a “best” PDRN serum, a superior concentration, or a delivery technology that solves penetration for every product. Rankings based only on concentration or marketing terminology overstate what is known.

When should you speak with a clinician?
Seek professional advice before using a PDRN product on a wound, after a recent procedure, or alongside prescription treatment. A dermatologist can also help distinguish a cosmetic concern from acne, eczema, rosacea, infection, or a scar that needs a proven intervention. Discuss any history of severe allergies, especially when the source of a nucleic-acid ingredient is unclear.
If you are considering an injection or microneedling-based treatment, ask who will perform it, which exact product and route will be used, what evidence supports that protocol, what side effects are possible, and what follow-up is provided. Those questions matter more than the phrase “regenerative” on a package.
Bottom line for shoppers
PDRN is a real DNA-fragment ingredient with plausible repair-related biology and clinical investigation in specific delivery settings. The central limitation is route: evidence for injections, wound care, or procedure-assisted use does not demonstrate that a leave-on serum crosses intact skin and reproduces those outcomes. If you try a topical PDRN product, treat it as a cosmetic choice, judge the complete formula, and keep expectations to possible hydration or barrier support rather than guaranteed regeneration, scar repair, or injectable-level results.
