A free browser PDF editor can handle many everyday Acrobat jobs—adding notes, filling forms, signing, and rearranging pages—but it is not a full replacement if you need to change existing text. PDFgear’s online editor covers those common tasks, while its own documentation directs users to separate desktop software for direct text editing and more advanced work. That distinction is the key to deciding whether a browser tab is enough for you.
What PDFgear’s browser editor can do
PDFgear describes its online editor as a tool for common PDF changes that do not require rewriting the document’s original text. In a browser, it can add text boxes, images, comments, notes, shapes, stamps, signatures, highlights, and freehand drawings. It also supports form fields and page organization, including reordering, rotating, copying, deleting, inserting blank pages, and importing another PDF. See PDFgear’s online PDF editor for its current feature list.
For forms, PDFgear says its browser form filler can fill existing forms or create fillable ones, including text boxes, checkboxes, and dropdowns. It also supports signatures and initials. The vendor describes this workflow as requiring no software installation: PDFgear’s PDF form filler.
Good fits for a browser workflow
- Adding a comment, highlight, shape, or note to a document.
- Filling in a form, adding a signature, or inserting a text box where a blank area is available.
- Reordering, rotating, copying, or removing pages before sending a file.
- Handling a one-off PDF when you do not need to work offline or alter the source text.
PDFgear’s stated workflow is to select a PDF, make the changes, review the result, and download the edited file. It says exported files have no watermark. These are vendor-described capabilities, not the result of independent hands-on testing.

The important limit: adding text is not editing existing text
A text box placed over a typo may make the page look corrected, but it does not necessarily change the underlying text in the PDF. PDFgear says its online editor cannot directly replace existing PDF text in the browser. For that kind of edit, it points to its separate desktop software. Its Windows PDF editing guide also describes Microsoft Word as an option for some text-based PDFs by converting them, and Microsoft Edge as a basic markup tool.
This matters when a document needs a genuine revision rather than an annotation or visual overlay. If you must correct a sentence in place, preserve the document’s structure, or use advanced editing features, the browser editor described here may not be sufficient. A broad claim that it does everything Acrobat does would go beyond the documented browser capabilities.

Scanned PDFs need a separate check
A scanned PDF is often a set of page images, not selectable text. Editing its words may require optical character recognition (OCR) to identify text before it can be changed. PDFgear’s Windows guide describes OCR in its desktop software; it does not establish equivalent OCR editing in the online editor. If your file is a scan, do not assume that adding a browser text box will make the original text editable.
What “free” means for the online editor
PDFgear’s current product page describes the browser editor as free, with no sign-up, ads, premium plan, purchase, watermark, usage-count limit, or time limit. It lists a maximum file size of 100 MB and notes that performance with large or complex files can depend on the device. These are the vendor’s stated terms and may change, so check the current product page before relying on them.

Adobe also lists a free online editor for tasks such as adding text and comments and using fill-and-sign, with a free Adobe account required. That listing is not enough to establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison or the current price of paid Acrobat plans: Adobe’s online PDF editor listing. The useful question is therefore not simply whether one option is free, but whether its features match your task and account preferences.
Privacy and file handling
PDFgear says files are processed locally and stay on the user’s device rather than being uploaded to a server. That is the company’s claim; it has not been independently verified here. If a document contains sensitive, confidential, or regulated information, check the vendor’s current privacy and security details and your organization’s rules before opening it in any online tool.

Choose the tool by the job
| Your task | Browser editor fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Add comments, highlights, shapes, or notes | PDFgear says these are supported online. | Review the downloaded PDF to confirm the annotations appear as intended. |
| Fill a form or add a signature | PDFgear says its online form tool supports form fields, signatures, and initials. | Check whether the recipient accepts the type of signature and completed file you produce. |
| Rearrange or remove pages | PDFgear lists page reordering, rotation, copying, deletion, blank-page insertion, and PDF import. | Review page order and content before sharing the exported file. |
| Replace existing text | Not supported directly by PDFgear’s online editor, according to the vendor. | Consider a desktop PDF editor; for some text-based PDFs, PDFgear’s guide describes conversion through Word. |
| Edit a scanned document | Equivalent OCR editing in the online editor is not established by the cited product information. | Check whether your chosen tool can OCR the scan and let you verify recognized text. |
| Work with a sensitive file | PDFgear claims local processing, but that claim is not independently verified here. | Confirm current privacy and security details and follow applicable data-handling policies. |
Bottom line on replacing Acrobat
If your Acrobat use is mostly comments, form completion, signatures, highlights, and page cleanup, PDFgear’s browser editor may cover the tasks you need without a paid plan, according to its current product description. If you regularly change existing text, work with scanned files that need OCR, need offline access, or rely on advanced editing, the browser tool is not a like-for-like substitute. Decide from the specific job—not from the fact that both products can edit PDFs in some sense.
