You can convert a PDF to Markdown in a browser by extracting its text with PDF.js and assembling the result into Markdown on the page. If the application reads a local file and does not send it to a server or remote processor, the file can stay on your device. That depends on the particular implementation, though—not merely on the phrase “client-side.”

Markdown is a text-first working format, not a faithful visual copy of a PDF. You will often need to repair reading order, headings, tables, and other structure before relying on the output.

Why convert a PDF to Markdown?

PDFs preserve page layout, while Markdown is easier to edit, search, reuse, and pass into text-based workflows. Converting can make a document more practical for note-taking, research, accessibility work, or downstream AI tools. The trade-off is that PDF page layout does not map cleanly to Markdown: the conversion may capture words without preserving how they relate visually or semantically.

PDF.js is a Mozilla-supported JavaScript platform for parsing and rendering PDFs. Its project description calls it “a Portable Document Format (PDF) viewer that is built with HTML5.” PDF.js on GitHub and its API documentation describe the browser-oriented tools developers can use to handle PDF files.

How to convert a PDF to Markdown in a browser

  1. Check whether the PDF has selectable text. Open it in a PDF viewer and try selecting and copying a sentence. If the words are selectable and copy sensibly, start with text extraction rather than OCR. The Tesseract.js FAQ says extracting existing text from a text-native PDF is faster and more accurate than recognizing it from page images: Tesseract.js FAQ.
  2. Extract text from text-native pages. A browser app can read a local PDF and use PDF.js to retrieve text. Extraction gives you text items; it does not automatically create accurate Markdown headings, lists, tables, or columns.
  3. Render scanned pages before OCR. Image-only pages do not contain a usable text layer to extract. Tesseract.js performs image OCR in the browser, but it does not directly process PDF files; a workflow using it must first render PDF pages to images, or use a PDF-capable library. See the Tesseract.js project.
  4. Build Markdown structure conservatively. Use headings and lists when the source gives clear evidence for them. Treat columns, tables, equations, figures, footnotes, and headers as items to verify rather than assuming text extraction preserved their relationships.
  5. Review the result against the original. Compare the output with the PDF page by page, correct missing or misordered content, and only then use the Markdown for its intended purpose.

Does client-side conversion keep the PDF private?

It can, if the application processes a local file in the browser and its code does not upload the file or send it to a remote conversion or OCR service. “Client-side” describes where a particular implementation does its work; it is not a blanket privacy guarantee for every website that offers browser-based conversion.

Check the tool’s stated data practices and, where practical, its network behavior. Look for uploads, remote APIs, proxies, or telemetry that could transmit the file or its contents. PDF.js runs under ordinary browser permissions, and its FAQ explains that remote requests are subject to browser same-origin restrictions. A PDF loaded from another origin may require appropriate CORS support or a proxy; using a proxy changes the data path. See the PDF.js FAQ.

Why extracted text may not match the page

Reading order can be wrong

A PDF can store text in an internal order that differs from the order a person would read it on the page. A documented PDF.js issue illustrates this failure mode. On a two-column page, for example, extracted text may interleave lines or follow an order that makes sense to the file but not to the reader. This is an observed limitation, not a measure of how often it occurs.

Text extraction does not reconstruct semantic structure

Words alone do not show whether a line is a heading, a table cell, a footnote, or a label attached to a figure. PDF.js can parse and render PDF content, but plain text extraction does not guarantee the document structure a Markdown reader expects. Adobe’s PDF Reference describes Unicode mapping requirements for tagged PDFs; that technical support does not mean every PDF is tagged or will extract cleanly.

Which method fits your PDF?

  • Selectable text: Begin with direct text extraction. It avoids the extra image-recognition step and is generally preferable to OCR for text-native PDFs.
  • Scanned or image-only pages: Render the pages to images, then use OCR, or choose a PDF-capable workflow. Review recognized text for errors.
  • Mixed PDFs: A document may contain both usable text and scanned pages. Use extraction where a text layer exists and OCR only where it is missing or unusable.
  • Complex layout: Expect manual reconstruction and careful comparison where columns, tables, formulas, or figures carry meaning.
  • Remote PDFs: Fetching a file from another website can be constrained by browser cross-origin rules. PDF.js also notes that range requests can depend on browser and server support; see its FAQ.

How to check the Markdown before using it

  • Compare each page’s text and reading order with the source PDF.
  • Check headings, lists, tables, footnotes, equations, and figure references rather than relying on appearance in a plain-text dump.
  • Look for missing characters or garbled text, especially in documents with unusual fonts or encoding.
  • Confirm that the final Markdown preserves distinctions that matter to your use—such as which value belongs to which table row or which note qualifies a statement.
  • If privacy matters, verify that the specific application processes the local file without uploading it or sending it to a remote processor.
