No. A black rectangle in a PDF may only cover the text visually; it does not prove the text underneath was deleted. To remove information, use the PDF editor’s redaction feature, apply the redactions, sanitize hidden information, and save the resulting file.
Why a black box may not delete the text
A drawn rectangle is a visual object placed over the page. If the underlying text remains in the document, someone may still be able to select, copy, search for, or otherwise recover it. The black appearance alone is not evidence that the content is gone. Research has documented tools that left text beneath redaction marks copyable.
An applied redaction is a different operation: it removes the marked content from the document rather than merely hiding it behind a shape. In Adobe’s guidance, the marks must be applied; placing or drawing a mark is not the completion step.

- Keep a protected original if you need one. Adobe says its apply-redaction flow creates a new redacted file and leaves the original unchanged. Store the original with appropriate access controls.
- Use the editor’s Redact feature. Select the text, images, or pages to remove. Adobe Acrobat can also search for text and patterns to mark, but Adobe notes that text inside images and line art cannot be searched this way. Review pages visually for content that search may miss.
- Apply the redactions. Confirm the editor’s apply or equivalent command. Do not treat an unapplied mark—or a rectangle drawn with a shape tool—as deletion.
- Sanitize hidden information. Removing visible content and cleaning hidden document information are separate steps. Adobe lists comments, metadata, and hidden layers among examples of information that may not be visibly rendered.
- Save the resulting copy and verify it. Adobe’s workflow saves completed redactions and hidden-information changes to a new file, and warns that unsaved changes will be lost. For sensitive documents, use your organization’s security procedure and have a second reviewer or approved process validate the saved output.
Adobe’s documented workflow and availability
Adobe’s redaction tutorial, last updated June 28, 2026, describes selecting or searching for content, marking it for redaction, applying the marks, and then continuing to sanitize hidden information. Adobe lists the workflow for Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. Check the current plan and regional availability before relying on access to a particular feature.

Adobe’s help page explains that applying redactions creates a new redacted file while leaving the original unchanged: Remove sensitive content from PDFs.
Why applied redaction still deserves care
A 2022 paper by Bland, Iyer, and Levchenko, “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction,” examined 11 popular redaction tools. The authors found two that left marked text in the document. They also reported that tools that did remove text could retain glyph-position information—clues about where characters had been—that may leak information.

The paper’s figures describe specific experiments, not the current failure rate of PDF software. For a typical Microsoft Word-authored PDF in the authors’ analysis, they describe 13 bits of information about a redacted surname. Their introduction reports up to 15.9 bits in a specific first-and-last-name scenario involving a PDF made with Word’s “Save as PDF,” with an estimated 38% success rate for that scenario. These results are limited to the study’s tested conditions; they are not general odds for any person’s PDF or a verdict on current versions of every editor.
The authors also report that rasterizing pages can increase security but does not eliminate every information leak. For especially sensitive material, follow the applicable organizational security process rather than relying on the page’s appearance or a single automated step.
