To use a controller in PCSX-Reloaded (PCSX-R), first make sure your computer recognizes it, then configure and map it in the emulator’s controller plugin. Finally, check whether the game expects Digital or Analog input. The exact settings screen depends on your PCSX-R build and installed plugin, so follow the plugin’s controls rather than expecting one universal menu path.
How PCSX-R controller setup works
PCSX-Reloaded is a fork of PCSX and uses the PSEMU plugin interface for much of its functionality. Controller input is handled by the input or controller plugin available in your build. The PCSX-Reloaded project README says that a number of plugins are included, but the available plugin and its settings can vary.
A PCSX-R setup guide for the Sinden lightgun, for example, tells users to select a controller plugin for the first controller. That illustrates the plugin-based approach; it does not establish compatibility for every gamepad or build. See the PCSX-R setup guide.

Before configuring the emulator
Connect the controller and check that your operating system recognizes it. If the system does not see the device, PCSX-R’s plugin may not be able to use it. The available documentation does not verify specific modern controller models, Bluetooth connections, or drivers, so compatibility needs to be confirmed for your operating system and installed plugin.

Configure and map the controller
- Open PCSX-R’s configuration. Find the controller or input-plugin settings. The precise menu label and location depend on the build.
- Choose the plugin for the first controller. Select the available controller/input plugin, then open its configuration if the build provides a separate settings control.
- Assign the controls. Use the plugin’s mapping controls to bind the gamepad’s directional inputs and buttons to the PlayStation controls. Older PCSX guidance describes mapping either a keyboard or a joystick; the controls and labels vary by plugin. See the legacy PCSX setup guide.
- Save the mapping and test it. Use the plugin’s save or apply control if present, then try the controls in a game.
Choose Digital or Analog input for the game
PCSX setup guidance describes Digital and Analog controller modes. These are controller modes, not a guarantee that every game supports both. If a game does not respond as expected, check its control requirements and change the mode in the plugin or emulator controls if that option is available. The precise setting and its location depend on your build.
Keyboard, joystick, or gamepad?
PCSX setup material describes configuring controls for either a keyboard or a joystick. A physical gamepad is the natural choice if you want handheld controls, but no universal compatibility ranking is established for current devices. For any input option, the practical checks are whether the operating system recognizes it and whether your installed plugin exposes it for mapping.

If the controller does not work
- No input registers: Confirm that the operating system recognizes the controller, then verify that PCSX-R is using the intended controller plugin.
- Some buttons work, but others do not: Reopen the plugin configuration and check each assignment. Save or apply the mapping again if the plugin requires it.
- Controls behave incorrectly in a particular game: Check whether the game expects Digital or Analog mode and select the matching option if available.
- The plugin or setting is missing: PCSX-R builds can differ in their included plugins and menus. Check the documentation for your specific build rather than relying on a menu path from a different release.
Build and compatibility differences
The project README describes build paths for Windows, Linux, and macOS, but those build instructions are legacy documentation, not current installation guidance. The operating system alone does not establish controller compatibility: the PCSX-R build and its available input plugin also matter. Confirm the behavior in the version you use.
