pCloud Encryption can be worth paying for if you want pCloud unable to decrypt a selected set of files and can safely manage a passphrase that pCloud cannot recover. It adds a separate Crypto Folder that encrypts files on your device before upload; it does not apply that same privacy boundary to every file in your pCloud account.
What does pCloud Encryption add?
pCloud describes Crypto as a separate folder for files you choose to protect. Those files are encrypted client-side before upload, and pCloud says it does not have the key or passphrase needed to read their contents. The practical benefit is a change in who can decrypt those files—not simply another layer of encryption while they sit on a server.
Ordinary pCloud files are not unencrypted. pCloud’s Help Center says files stored on its servers use 256-bit AES server-side encryption. Its 2025 explanation also describes TLS for data in transit and says its client-side Crypto model uses AES-256. These are pCloud’s descriptions; they are not an independent audit or verification of its implementation. See pCloud’s Encryption page, its Terms and Conditions, the WebDAV and rsync help article, and its March 25, 2025 zero-knowledge explainer.
Is the added privacy worth its price?
The answer depends on whether the provider-blind privacy boundary matters for the files you intend to store. On pCloud’s Encryption page, the price display checked on October 7, 2026 showed 49.99 EUR per year alongside 59.88 EUR. The labels in the extracted display were not fully clear, so do not assume which figure applies to your purchase or treat either as a universal quote. Currency, region, checkout terms, and promotions may change the amount; verify the current price at checkout before estimating the cost over several years.

- Easy to Set Up and Use Home-based Personal Cloud Data Backup for All Your Smart Devices
- Total Data Ownership and Control with Zero Required Membership
- Anywhere Cloud Access and File Sharing
- 512GB Built-in SSD Storage with USB for Expandable Storage Options
- Private and Secure Alternative to Traditional Cloud Services
- More likely worth it: You already use pCloud, have a manageable set of confidential files, want pCloud itself unable to read those files, and can preserve the passphrase securely.
- Less likely worth it: Your priority is routine syncing, collaboration, protocol-based backups, or easy password recovery—or you do not want to maintain a separate credential and folder workflow.
In short, the fee buys a narrower privacy boundary for chosen files, along with the responsibility and workflow limits that come with it.
What trade-offs should you check first?
Crypto is not an account-wide switch
The Crypto Folder is a distinct area, not a setting that changes encryption for every item in your account. You must choose which files to place there; other files remain in the ordinary pCloud storage workflow.

A lost Crypto passphrase cannot be restored
pCloud’s terms say it cannot restore a lost Crypto passphrase. Keep an independent, secure recovery record, and avoid making the Crypto Folder the only copy of irreplaceable files. The privacy boundary is useful only if you can still access your data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWebDAV and rsync cannot access the Crypto Folder
pCloud says the Crypto Folder is not accessible through WebDAV or rsync, though those protocols can access ordinary account files. If either protocol is central to your backup or file-access setup, this limitation may outweigh the added privacy.

A quick decision checklist
- Name the files. Identify the specific files for which you want pCloud to lack the ability to decrypt their contents.
- Check the workflow. Decide whether a separate folder suits how you organize and access those files, and whether you rely on WebDAV or rsync.
- Plan for recovery. Make sure you can retain the passphrase securely and maintain another copy of files you cannot afford to lose.
- Confirm the actual fee. Check your region’s checkout price and compare it with how long you expect to use the feature.
pCloud founder and CEO Tunio Zafer summarizes the intended boundary on the official product page: “With pCloud Encryption, only you hold the key to unlock your files.” That describes the product’s stated model; it should not be read as independent security verification.
