PCIe and SXM are system-integration choices, not universal performance grades. The better option depends on the exact GPU SKU, memory capacity and bandwidth, GPU-to-GPU fabric, server compatibility, power and cooling, and whether your workload stays on one accelerator or scales across several. In NVIDIA’s current examples, SXM GPUs are the foundation of dense HGX multi-GPU systems, while PCIe GPUs can serve single-GPU deployments and can also use NVLink bridges in selected NVL configurations. Compare complete, configured servers rather than assuming that every SXM card is faster than every PCIe card.
What PCIe and SXM mean
PCIe GPUs are accelerator cards that plug into a server’s PCI Express slots. PCIe supplies the host connection to the CPU and system, and the card’s design must fit the server’s slot spacing, airflow, power delivery, firmware, and software support. Some PCIe products also connect to one another with NVLink bridges, so “PCIe” does not mean “PCIe-only” communication.
SXM GPUs are high-power modules mounted to a purpose-built baseboard rather than installed as ordinary add-in cards. NVIDIA uses SXM modules in HGX reference platforms, where several GPUs share a designed GPU fabric and a server chassis engineered for their power and cooling requirements. An SXM module normally cannot be added to an arbitrary PCIe workstation or rack server.

Representative H100 and H200 specifications
The following figures are product-specific NVIDIA specifications. H200 figures come from a November 2024 datasheet that labels the specifications preliminary and subject to change. They should not be generalized to other GPU generations.
| GPU option | Memory | Memory bandwidth | Maximum configurable TDP | Listed interconnect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H100 SXM | 80 GB | 3.35 TB/s | Up to 700 W | NVLink 900 GB/s; PCIe Gen5 128 GB/s |
| H100 NVL (PCIe) | 94 GB | 3.9 TB/s | 350–400 W | NVLink 600 GB/s; PCIe Gen5 128 GB/s |
| H200 SXM | 141 GB | 4.8 TB/s | Up to 700 W | NVLink 900 GB/s; PCIe Gen5 128 GB/s |
| H200 NVL (PCIe) | 141 GB | 4.8 TB/s | Up to 600 W | Two- or four-way NVLink bridge, up to 900 GB/s per GPU; PCIe Gen5 128 GB/s |
Sources: NVIDIA H100 specifications and the NVIDIA H200 GPU datasheet. The table illustrates why a form-factor label is insufficient: H100 SXM and H100 NVL differ in memory, bandwidth, NVLink bandwidth, and configurable power, while the cited H200 SXM and H200 NVL entries list the same memory and memory bandwidth but different power limits and bridge arrangements.
Memory capacity and bandwidth
First determine whether the model and its working state fit in GPU memory. Training needs room for parameters, gradients, optimizer state, activations, and any framework overhead. Inference generally needs less state, but long contexts, large batches, retrieval caches, and quantization choices can materially change the requirement. If one GPU cannot hold the deployment, you need a partitioning strategy and a platform whose interconnect can sustain the resulting traffic.
Memory bandwidth matters when kernels are memory-bound. The cited H200 configurations list 141 GB of HBM3e and 4.8 TB/s, while the cited H100 entries list 80 GB and 3.35 TB/s for SXM and 94 GB and 3.9 TB/s for H100 NVL. Those are not interchangeable “PCIe versus SXM” ratings; they belong to particular products. Check the current datasheet for the exact SKU you are buying.
GPU-to-GPU communication: NVLink, bridges and PCIe
Multi-GPU jobs repeatedly exchange activations, gradients, parameters, or key-value caches. The relevant question is the complete topology: which GPUs can communicate directly, at what bandwidth, and through what switches or bridges.
SXM in HGX systems
NVIDIA’s HGX reference architecture mounts four or eight SXM GPUs on a baseboard and provides a designed NVLink/NVSwitch fabric. The cited HGX documentation includes eight-GPU H100, H200, and B200 SXM node configurations. These systems are intended for large-model training, fine-tuning, inference, and HPC workloads that benefit from tightly coupled accelerators. PCIe NVL configurations
PCIe NVL products can include NVLink. NVIDIA lists 600 GB/s NVLink for H100 NVL and two- or four-way NVLink bridge arrangements for H200 NVL, with up to 900 GB/s per GPU in the cited H200 datasheet. The number of connected GPUs, bridge layout, and server topology vary by product. A PCIe server with a bridge is not equivalent to an eight-GPU HGX NVSwitch system.

A GPU’s PCIe Gen5 figure describes its host or PCIe path; an NVLink figure describes GPU-to-GPU connectivity. Inter-node traffic uses the server’s network adapters and switches. For a distributed training job, evaluate all three layers instead of comparing a single PCIe number directly with an NVLink number.
Which is better for AI inference?
For inference, choose the platform that meets memory, latency, throughput, availability, and operational requirements with the fewest unnecessary components.
Single-GPU inference
If the model and serving workload fit on one accelerator, a compatible PCIe server is often the simpler deployment. It can use standard rack-server designs, and it avoids paying for a multi-GPU fabric that the application never exercises. NVIDIA’s HGX networking guidance states: “For the use case of pure inference, a compute network may not be necessary.” That statement applies to the described case where inference fits on one GPU; it is not a universal rule for every model or service. See NVIDIA’s HGX physical-topology guidance.
Multi-GPU inference
When a model exceeds one GPU’s usable memory or the service needs more throughput than one accelerator can deliver, model parallelism or replicated workers become relevant. Replication may scale without frequent cross-GPU transfers; model parallelism does not. In the latter case, an HGX SXM fabric can reduce communication bottlenecks, while a PCIe NVL design may be adequate when its bridge topology matches the communication pattern.
Latency and batching
Measure the production batch size, sequence length, concurrency, precision, and software stack. A high-bandwidth interconnect helps only when the workload actually transfers data between GPUs. A single-GPU service may be limited by memory bandwidth, kernel efficiency, or host input processing instead.

Which is better for AI training?
Training normally stresses GPU-to-GPU communication more than independent inference workers do. Data parallelism synchronizes gradients; tensor and pipeline parallelism move activations and weights between devices. As the number of GPUs increases, topology and collective-communication performance become central procurement criteria.
Node-scale training
HGX SXM systems are designed around dense four- and eight-GPU nodes and a high-bandwidth GPU fabric. They are a natural fit when one training job must keep many GPUs tightly synchronized. Confirm the exact NVLink/NVSwitch generation, host CPUs, memory, storage, and networking in the proposed server; “SXM” alone does not specify all of those components.
PCIe training
PCIe GPUs can train effectively when the job uses one GPU, scales through relatively independent workers, or fits a PCIe NVL topology. They may also be easier to place in existing servers. For communication-heavy parallelism, however, a PCIe-only path can become a bottleneck. Do not assume that a bridge-equipped NVL system has the same connectivity pattern as an HGX node.

Once training spans nodes, the cluster network can dominate step time. Review the inter-node network, topology, collective-communication support, and storage path together with the GPU fabric. NVIDIA’s HGX overview describes reference systems for workloads that scale across nodes; it does not establish a universal performance ranking between all PCIe and SXM implementations.
How to choose: a practical decision process
- Define the workload. Record whether you need inference, fine-tuning, pretraining, or HPC; target latency and throughput; batch size; context length; precision; and expected concurrency.
- Calculate usable memory. Include model weights plus runtime state, activation or key-value-cache requirements, and safety margin. Compare the result with the exact GPU SKU, not a generic H100 or H200 label.
- Map parallelism. Decide whether the job uses one GPU, replicated workers, data parallelism, tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism, or a combination. Estimate how much data crosses GPUs at each step.
- Inspect the complete topology. Identify NVLink/NVSwitch connections, bridge groups, PCIe root complexes, CPU sockets, and inter-node network paths. Request a topology diagram from the system vendor.
- Validate power and cooling. Check the configurable board power against the server’s power supplies, circuits, airflow, fan policy, and rack limits. The cited H100 SXM and H200 SXM entries allow up to 700 W, while the cited H100 NVL range is 350–400 W and H200 NVL is listed up to 600 W.
- Confirm platform support. Verify the motherboard or HGX baseboard, firmware, driver and CUDA compatibility, chassis clearance, operating system, and management tools. An accelerator that cannot be initialized reliably is not a usable bargain.
- Compare complete systems. Include GPUs, CPUs, system memory, storage, networking, support, power distribution, and deployment labor. Isolated accelerator pricing does not reveal the cost or capability of a configured HGX or PCIe server.
- Benchmark the intended application. Use representative models, precisions, sequence lengths, batch sizes, and communication patterns. Vendor performance claims are workload-specific and should not be treated as independent proof that one form factor always wins.
Common deployment scenarios
One model, one GPU
Select the GPU with enough usable memory and the required single-device throughput. PCIe is usually the more flexible integration route because it fits conventional servers, but an SXM system can still be appropriate if it is already part of your approved platform.
Several independent inference replicas
Prioritize memory per replica, host I/O, scheduler capacity, and total power density. Direct GPU-to-GPU bandwidth may matter little when replicas do not exchange tensors. A PCIe server can be more economical operationally if its cooling and power design meet the aggregate load.

One large model split across GPUs
Prioritize memory capacity and the latency of the required collective operations. Compare an HGX SXM fabric with the exact bridge topology of any PCIe NVL option. The model’s partitioning strategy may determine the winner more strongly than the package name.

Large distributed training run
Evaluate the node fabric and inter-node network as one system. An eight-GPU SXM node may simplify dense intra-node communication, but cluster-level efficiency still depends on networking, software, data loading, and synchronization.
The approximately 13-billion-parameter guidance
NVIDIA’s HGX network-topology documentation uses approximately 13 billion parameters as an example of when model parallelism may become necessary in its described architecture. Treat that number as architecture guidance, not a universal memory-fit threshold. Parameter count alone omits precision, quantization, context length, batch size, optimizer state, and implementation overhead. A model below that size can still require multiple GPUs, while a larger model may fit through quantization or other partitioning techniques.

SXM platforms are engineered as a package: baseboard, heatsinks, fans, power delivery, firmware, and chassis airflow are selected together. Buying an SXM module separately does not turn a PCIe server into an HGX system.
PCIe cards still have substantial requirements. Check slot width, auxiliary power connectors, neighboring-card clearance, intake temperature, fan curves, and the server manufacturer’s supported-GPU list. A server may have enough theoretical wattage but lack the connector, airflow, or firmware profile needed for sustained operation.

Software and operational checks
- Confirm that the planned driver and CUDA stack supports the exact GPU revision and operating system.
- Verify that all GPUs enumerate correctly and that NVLink or bridge links report the expected topology.
- Use the vendor’s supported firmware and BIOS versions for the server or HGX baseboard.
- Test collective communication with the same GPU count and process placement used in production.
- Monitor thermals, clocks, power limits, ECC events, and throttling during a sustained workload rather than a short initialization test.
- Document the topology so schedulers and distributed frameworks place processes on the intended GPUs and CPU NUMA domains.
Pitfalls and how to avoid them
Calling SXM automatically faster
A form factor is not a benchmark. Compare the same GPU generation and SKU under the same workload, precision, software, and power settings.
Assuming PCIe excludes NVLink
H100 NVL and H200 NVL demonstrate that PCIe products can include NVLink. Check the product datasheet for bridge count, supported pairings, and bandwidth.
Using a single H100 specification for every H100
H100 SXM and H100 NVL have different memory, bandwidth, interconnect, and power figures. Keep the suffix in procurement documents and configuration files.
Reading H200 preliminary figures as permanent
The November 2024 H200 datasheet marks its specifications preliminary and subject to change. Revalidate them against the current product documentation before ordering.
Comparing GPU links with cluster links
NVLink, PCIe, and inter-node networking serve different paths. A fast intra-node link cannot compensate for an undersized cluster network when the job communicates heavily between nodes.
Ignoring the server
GPU compatibility includes chassis, power, cooling, motherboard or baseboard, firmware, drivers, and support. Obtain a validated system configuration rather than mixing parts based only on slot availability.
What current evidence can and cannot establish
The cited NVIDIA materials document product specifications and reference architectures, but they do not provide a controlled, independent benchmark proving that PCIe or SXM universally wins for inference or training. NVIDIA’s selected performance statements should therefore be read with their stated workload assumptions and identified as vendor claims. Your application’s memory footprint, communication pattern, and complete server configuration determine the result.
