Passing radiated-emissions testing starts with finding the current path that is radiating—not adding components at random. Common-mode and differential-mode current loops, fast switching edges, board geometry, and attached cables can all contribute. Use repeatable measurements to locate likely sources, then change one design variable at a time and check that any improvement does not compromise signal integrity, thermal performance, isolation, or safety.
How a PCB and its cables radiate
Radiated emissions often arise when high-frequency current flows through a loop or onto a conductor that can act as an antenna. In isolated switching designs, both common-mode and differential-mode loops may contribute. Larger loop areas can increase radiation, while a board or cable can provide a path for unwanted current. Texas Instruments describes antenna formation as a primary cause of radiation in its ISOW7741 application brief; in practice, trace the actual current paths and connected conductors rather than assuming a board feature alone explains a peak.
Fast switching edges and higher data rates can add high-frequency spectral content. TI notes that faster data rates increase parasitic charging activity and that fast slew rates bring higher-frequency content in its digital-isolator emissions brief. If reducing the rate is not an option, layout, strategic impedance, and shielding are among the mitigation approaches described there.

- Fix the test configuration. Record operating mode, load, enclosure, grounding, cables, cable lengths, probes, and nearby conductive structures. Keep the setup representative of the intended product use, including planned protective-earth and shield connections.
- Find repeatable peaks. Note the frequencies and operating conditions at which they occur. Compare peaks with switching frequencies and harmonics, fast data edges, and likely common-mode current paths. Treat a frequency match as a clue to investigate, not proof of cause.
- Trace the current paths. Inspect switching-current loop area, return paths, decoupling placement, high-frequency paths, and isolation-related keep-outs. Use the specific device data sheet and evaluation-board guidance for placement requirements.
- Change one variable and remeasure. Isolate the effect of a placement, component, wiring, or operating-mode change. There is no universal experiment sequence or guaranteed result; keep records so improvements and regressions can be attributed to the change.
- Check for side effects. Recheck other emissions peaks and confirm the change does not degrade signal integrity, thermal behavior, isolation, or safety.

Decoupling and loop geometry
For the ISOW7741, TI specifies a 0.01-µF decoupling capacitor within 1 mm of the device’s relevant supply pins. The brief explains that decoupling supports filtering differential noise and supplies peak currents, with values selected for the converter frequency. This value and distance are a recommendation for that part, not a universal capacitor rule. See the ISOW7741 application brief.

Isolation keep-outs and copper
In the same ISOW7741 guidance, TI recommends keep-out zones to limit parasitic coupling between the two sides of the isolated design. Avoiding planes directly beneath device pins within the highlighted regions is described as a best-case approach. Apply that advice in the isolation context and layout shown; it is not a blanket prohibition on copper beneath every PCB component. The brief’s layout guidance is the relevant reference.
Ferrites, filters, and chokes
TI’s June 2026 EMC note lists decoupling capacitors, ferrite-bead pi-filters, isolated copper islands, common-mode chokes, and Y-capacitors among its techniques. The right choice depends on the noise mechanism, frequency, board stack-up, isolation constraints, and safety requirements. A ferrite’s impedance across the relevant band, current rating, possible saturation, and placement all need review; the cited material does not establish a universal ferrite part or a guaranteed fix. See TI’s EMC techniques note.

For the ISOW6441, TI describes a product-specific approach involving a symmetric architecture and spread-spectrum clocking. Those are device-specific design claims, not evidence that the same approach will produce the same result on another board. Details are on the ISOW6441 product and support page.

Compare mitigations against the suspected path
| Option | Most relevant question | Design checks |
|---|---|---|
| Decoupling capacitor | Is high-frequency differential noise or peak supply current contributing? | Follow part-specific value and placement guidance; consider the converter frequency and current loop. |
| Ferrite-bead pi-filter | Would added impedance in the relevant supply path attenuate the observed noise? | Review impedance versus frequency, current rating, saturation, placement, and filter interaction. |
| Common-mode choke | Is common-mode current on a power or signal connection a likely path? | Check the current path, frequency behavior, signal integrity, and physical location. |
| Isolated copper island or keep-out change | Could parasitic coupling across the isolation boundary be involved? | Respect the device’s isolation layout, clearance, and safety requirements. |
| Y-capacitor | Would a capacitive return path address the suspected common-mode noise? | Evaluate safety classification, leakage current, isolation, and product requirements. |
This is a mechanism-led engineering comparison, not a controlled head-to-head performance ranking. TI’s note identifies the techniques, but their suitability and trade-offs depend on the specific design.

Why test wiring can change the result
Long power wires and probes can act as antennas and influence measured emissions. Keep connections short when that reflects the product’s use; otherwise reproduce the planned cable lengths and connections, including protective earth or shields. TI identifies common-mode chokes near the device and ferrite cable clamps as possible options for long supply connections, and suggests ferrite core clamps to reduce the influence of long supply wires during measurement. These are diagnostic or mitigation options, not substitutes for representative final-use wiring. See the ISOW7741 brief.

That is a result for the specified evaluation design and test conditions, not a general pass rate or guarantee for another implementation. The note is available at TI’s EMC techniques note. No population-wide first-pass compliance percentage is established by the cited materials.
