Sometimes. You can replace the Wi-Fi card in some desktop PCs and laptops, but whether you can do it depends on the exact computer. Check its service manual or approved-parts list first: the wireless module might be soldered, or a replacement may not match the slot, electrical interface, antennas, platform, or manufacturer and regional requirements.
How to tell whether your PC’s Wi-Fi card is replaceable
There is no universal answer for all PCs. Computer makers choose different wireless designs, and the service procedure for one model does not establish what is possible in another. Intel says compatibility depends on the computer maker’s design because limitations may be on the motherboard side (Intel’s AX200 compatibility guidance).
- Identify the exact system. Record the full PC model. For a custom desktop, record the motherboard model and revision.
- Find the model’s service manual and approved-parts information. Check whether the wireless module is socketed or soldered and whether the manual documents its removal. Also note how much enclosure disassembly is required.
- Identify the installed module and its interface. Use the card’s exact model and the manual, not a generic “Wi-Fi card” label or its advertised Wi-Fi generation, to determine what it connects to.
- Check the replacement as a complete fit. Verify the physical slot and card size, electrical and platform compatibility, antenna connectors and leads, any bracket or cable, and support for the system’s BIOS, operating system, and drivers.
For a laptop, check with the computer maker about the exact model and country before buying. Manufacturer limitations and regional regulatory requirements can affect wireless-adapter upgrades; they do not mean every laptop has an adapter whitelist (Intel’s guidance on laptops that do not recognize a new adapter).

Why an M.2 slot alone is not enough
M.2 describes a physical connector and card form factor; it does not establish that every wireless module using that connector will work in a given PC. Check both the key and size and the electrical and platform requirements.

PCIe-based modules
Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 AX200 is a PCIe example. Intel says the motherboard needs a compatible M.2 Key A or Key E socket for the AX200 (AX200 compatibility guidance). For its AX200 desktop kit, Intel specifies an M.2 Key E 2230 socket and excludes Key M and Key B sockets (Intel desktop kit contents and requirements).
CNVi and companion RF modules
Some Intel wireless modules use Intel Integrated Connectivity (CNVi) with a companion RF module. A CNVi module can physically fit a standard M.2 Key E socket and still fail in a system that was not designed for CNVi. Confirm platform support instead of assuming that a matching key makes it compatible (Intel’s CNVi and companion RF module explanation).

What installation can involve
The steps vary by computer. For example, the ThinkCentre M92z User Guide describes a replaceable mini PCI Express x1 Wi-Fi card in that particular all-in-one. Its procedure includes disconnecting the computer from power, opening the enclosure, removing the rear I/O assembly, disconnecting two card cables, removing a screw, lifting out the card, fitting and securing the replacement, and reconnecting the cables. Lenovo notes that a Wi-Fi card is present only in some M92z models. This older, model-specific procedure is not a guide for other desktops or laptops (Lenovo ThinkCentre M92z User Guide).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMotherboard-based installations can differ too. ASUS documentation for the PRIME B560M-A describes a Wi-Fi module in an M.2 Key E slot that is secured from the underside; the card, RF cable, and antenna are purchased separately (ASUS PRIME B560M-A manual). ASUS’s AX200 V-M.2 installation guide describes fitting the module in a Key E slot, securing it with screws, and connecting the bundled antenna using the bundled RF cable (ASUS AX200 V-M.2 installation guide).

- Intel WI-FI 6E AX210 module built-in
- Dedicated spectrum in 6GHz band for maximum speed and ultra-low latencies
- Support dual-stream Wireless in the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands
- IEEE 802.11.acR2plusax compliant
- High speed wireless connection up to 2400Mbps
Before opening a PC, follow its own safety instructions and service manual. Disconnect power as directed, and avoid pulling antenna leads by their wires. Stop if the card is soldered, inaccessible, or requires disassembly beyond your skill level.
What to do if internal replacement is not supported
If the module is soldered, the manufacturer does not approve a suitable replacement, or the fit is uncertain, consider an external USB Wi-Fi adapter or a desktop PCIe adapter instead. These options still have requirements: check operating-system and driver support, available USB ports or PCIe slots, antenna placement, and whether the connection problem is actually caused by the existing Wi-Fi card. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universal performance ranking for USB, PCIe, or internal modules.

- INTEL AX200 CHIPSET: Genuine Intel silicon delivers 2400Mbps on 5GHz and 574Mbps on 2.4GHz via 802.11ax; proven driver stability and broad router compatibility, the same wireless module used in premium laptops
- LOW-LATENCY GAMING AND 4K STREAMING: OFDMA and MU-MIMO keep response times short when several devices share the network; built for competitive matches, 4K playback and VR headsets on desktop PCs
- BLUETOOTH 5.2 BUILT IN: Pairs wireless controllers, headsets, keyboards and mice directly from the card, so no USB dongle is needed; WPA3 encryption secures the wireless connection
- FITS ANY DESKTOP, WINDOWS 11 AND 10: Installs in any PCIe x1, x4, x8 or x16 slot; standard and low-profile brackets both included for towers and slim SFF cases; auto-detected on 64-bit Windows, no driver disc
- TWO 5dBi HIGH-GAIN ANTENNAS: Detachable antennas extend usable range and cut dead spots across the home; includes card, two antennas, pre-installed standard bracket, low-profile bracket and quick-start guide
Before spending money on any adapter, check the supported wireless bands and standards against your router. A newer Wi-Fi generation on the card alone does not guarantee faster real-world service.
Buying a replacement without guessing
Search by the exact computer or motherboard model and look for a manufacturer-approved module or explicitly documented compatibility. A search phrase such as “Intel AX200 M.2 Key E Wi-Fi card” can help locate a candidate, but it is not a universal recommendation. AX200 compatibility, kit contents, and installation must be checked against the specific machine; confirm whether the listing includes the necessary antenna, RF cable, and bracket for that system.
