The best speakers for a gaming PC and a home-entertainment setup depend on four checks: available desk or room space, the outputs on your computer and TV, how much bass you want, and whether you need genuine multichannel playback. A compact 2.0 pair is usually the simplest desktop choice; a 2.1 kit adds dedicated low-end; a soundbar saves space; powered bookshelf speakers can serve a desk and television; and a discrete surround system is appropriate only when you can place—and correctly connect—its additional channels.
Start with the speaker format, not the brand
“Best” is a format decision before it is a model decision. Two speakers that look similar can behave very differently once you account for a subwoofer, channel count, input types, and placement. The categories below cover the practical choices for a PC, a television, or both.
| Format | What you get | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0 stereo | Two full-range speakers and two audio channels | Small desks, near-field gaming, music and general video | No separate subwoofer; bass output depends on the speakers and placement |
| 2.1 | Two satellite speakers plus a separate subwoofer | Games and films where stronger low-frequency impact matters | Uses more floor or desk space and adds another cable and control point |
| Soundbar | One long enclosure, often with an optional or included subwoofer | TV-and-PC setups where horizontal space is easier to find than width for two speakers | Less physical separation than left and right speakers; surround performance depends heavily on the connection and model |
| Powered bookshelf pair | Two larger powered stereo speakers, commonly with TV and computer inputs | A shared desk, television and music system | Needs more room and usually costs more than compact desktop speakers |
| Discrete surround | Multiple speakers placed around the listener for separate channels | A room where you can position rear or side speakers and use a compatible multichannel source | More wiring, calibration and placement work; a surround label does not guarantee surround playback through every input |
Choose 2.0 when the desk is the constraint
A 2.0 pair keeps the setup narrow and straightforward. Place the left and right speakers at roughly equal distances from your chair, aimed toward your ears, with the tweeters near ear height. This arrangement gives games a clear stereo image without requiring a subwoofer on the floor. It is also the least complicated option when the computer is your only source.
Compact models often combine USB-C, a 3.5 mm analog input and Bluetooth. Creative Pebble Pro is an example in this category; Tom’s Hardware lists it as a 2.0 system with USB-C, 3.5 mm analog and Bluetooth 5.3. Creative’s listed specifications do not include HDMI ARC, so do not assume a compact USB speaker will connect directly to a television.

Choose 2.1 when bass is a priority
A 2.1 system adds a dedicated subwoofer to the left and right speakers. That can make explosions, engine sounds and film scores feel fuller, but the subwoofer needs a sensible location and a compatible connection. Under a desk is convenient, although a corner can exaggerate bass. Start with the subwoofer near the front speakers, then move it a short distance at a time until bass is even rather than boomy.
Do not treat “subwoofer output” as a universal connector standard. Confirm whether the speaker system provides a line-level, dedicated or digital output and whether the subwoofer accepts that signal. Kanto’s REN specification lists a subwoofer output and an automatic 80 Hz high-pass/low-pass filter. That is a concrete example of an expansion path, not a promise that every third-party subwoofer will work.
Choose a soundbar when width and cable simplicity matter
A soundbar can fit under a monitor or television and reduce the number of objects on a desk. PC Gamer’s 2026 category example includes Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI ARC, USB-C audio, optical and 3.5 mm inputs, illustrating why soundbars are attractive for a mixed-source setup. The listed price is time-sensitive, so check the current listing before buying.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Soundbars vary in how they create a wider or surround-like field. A bar may advertise surround processing, but the result still depends on the source signal, the input connection and the television’s audio settings. If you need discrete rear channels, verify that the model actually supports them and that the required speakers are included or available.

Choose powered bookshelf speakers for a shared PC-and-TV system
Powered bookshelf speakers are often the most flexible middle ground. They provide true left-right separation for games and music while accepting the connection types commonly found on computers and televisions. They also leave room for a subwoofer if the model provides an appropriate output.
Kanto lists REN with HDMI ARC and CEC, RCA, optical, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5 mm AUX inputs. The manufacturer specifies 100 W RMS and a 50 Hz–22 kHz response, plus an automatic 80 Hz filter and a subwoofer output. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements; verify the exact regional version before purchase.
Choose discrete surround only when you can support it
Surround makes sense when you have space for additional speakers and a source that can deliver separate channels. Plan the speaker positions before buying: front left and right should flank the display, the center channel should stay near the screen, and rear or side channels need clear paths around the seating position. If your desk is against a wall or the television is in a narrow room, a well-positioned stereo pair may produce a more reliable result than badly placed surround speakers.
Most importantly, channel count on the product box is not enough. A system can support 5.1 or 7.1 through one input while accepting only stereo through another.

Check the entire connection chain
For a computer-and-TV system, compare the output on each source with an input on the speakers. Then verify what channel format that specific connection carries. A connector that physically fits is not proof that it will pass the audio you want.
| Source or connection | What to verify | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| USB or USB-C | Whether the speaker appears as a USB audio device and whether the model supports the desired channel count | Direct PC connection; often the cleanest route for desktop audio |
| 3.5 mm analog or RCA | Correct output level and left/right channel wiring | Older PCs, monitors, televisions and simple stereo systems |
| Optical | Whether the source is set to PCM stereo or a supported encoded format | Televisions and PCs with optical output |
| Bluetooth | Codec support, latency and whether playback is stereo-only | Music or casual listening without a cable |
| HDMI ARC | ARC support on both devices and the television’s digital-audio setting | Television audio with a soundbar or powered speakers |
| HDMI eARC | eARC on the TV, compatible speaker input and the TV’s stated multichannel limits | Higher-bandwidth TV audio and supported multichannel formats |
Kanto’s REN input list demonstrates how one powered pair can cover HDMI ARC, USB-C, optical, RCA, Bluetooth and 3.5 mm sources. Those are manufacturer-listed inputs, not a guarantee that every computer or television supports every format on them.
Why Bluetooth may not deliver surround
Pioneer’s official information for the SOUND TECTOR TQ-FG3000 states that Bluetooth playback is stereo only. The same product can support 5.1 or 7.1 playback through USB or HDMI eARC, subject to the source device and television specifications. Therefore, pairing a surround-capable speaker wirelessly does not make Bluetooth a surround connection.
Recommended Free Tools
How television settings affect eARC
Pioneer also notes that multichannel playback over HDMI eARC depends on the television’s specifications. In the TV’s sound menu, look for eARC rather than ARC, choose the correct HDMI port, and select a pass-through or bitstream option only when the speaker system supports it. If the TV offers no eARC setting, consult its manual; do not infer capability from the presence of an ordinary HDMI socket.

Set up a PC-and-TV speaker system
- List the outputs. Record the computer’s USB/USB-C, 3.5 mm, optical, HDMI or Bluetooth options and the television’s ARC/eARC, optical, analog and Bluetooth options.
- List the speaker inputs. Use the exact model’s manual or rear-panel diagram. Distinguish HDMI ARC from HDMI eARC, and identify whether the subwoofer connection is analog or proprietary.
- Decide the required channel format. If stereo is sufficient, 2.0, 2.1, a soundbar or powered bookshelf speakers can work. If you require 5.1 or 7.1, select a connection explicitly documented for that format.
- Connect the primary source first. For a PC, USB or USB-C is often the simplest digital path when supported. For a TV, use HDMI ARC/eARC when both devices support it; otherwise use optical, analog or Bluetooth according to the speaker manual.
- Set the source output. In the operating system, choose the speaker as the active output. On the TV, select the connected HDMI or optical device and set the digital-audio mode recommended by the speaker manufacturer.
- Place the speakers symmetrically. Keep the left and right speakers at similar distances from your seat, avoid blocking the display, and point them toward the listening position.
- Add the subwoofer only after stereo works. Connect the approved output, set the crossover or filter as directed, and adjust level gradually. Kanto’s REN documentation specifies an automatic 80 Hz filter; other systems may use different values or controls.
- Test each use case. Play a game, a dialogue-heavy video and music. Check that game cues remain positioned, speech is intelligible and the connection does not switch unexpectedly when another source wakes.

Small desk, headphones as a backup
Choose 2.0 speakers with USB-C or 3.5 mm input. Prioritize a compact footprint, front-panel volume control and a stable stereo image over a large amplifier claim. Keep the speakers on stands or isolation pads if the desk vibrates.
Gaming desk in a shared room
A soundbar can keep the desktop clear, while a small 2.0 pair gives more obvious left-right separation. If the computer and TV share the system, HDMI ARC/eARC or multiple physical inputs are more valuable than Bluetooth alone.

Dedicated home-entertainment seating
Consider discrete surround when you can run the necessary cables and position the extra speakers around the seating area. Confirm that the console, PC, receiver or television can output the desired format over the selected connection. If any link in the chain is stereo-only, the system will not receive discrete multichannel audio there.
How to judge speakers for games, video and music
Editorial evaluations of computer speakers commonly examine games, video, music and voice clarity. Use those same listening tasks when comparing candidates, but separate a reviewer’s observations from manufacturer specifications. A frequency-response range or wattage figure does not by itself establish dialogue quality, imaging or low-frequency control.
- Games: Check whether positional cues remain distinct when several effects occur simultaneously.
- Video: Use dialogue-heavy scenes to judge whether voices stay clear at low and moderate volume.
- Music: Listen for a stable center image and whether bass overwhelms vocals or instruments.
- Controls: Confirm that volume, mute, input selection and Bluetooth pairing are accessible from the desk or sofa.
- Placement: Recheck the sound after moving speakers; a corner, wall or monitor shelf can change bass and imaging substantially.
Common problems and fixes
There is no sound from the TV
- Confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC-labelled HDMI port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the external HDMI, optical or analog device.
- Try PCM stereo first. If that works but a multichannel mode does not, the TV or speaker may not support that format on the selected connection.
- Check whether HDMI-CEC or ARC must be enabled in the TV menu.
Bluetooth works but surround does not
This is expected on systems that restrict Bluetooth to stereo. Use the documented USB or HDMI eARC path for multichannel playback; Pioneer explicitly identifies this limitation for the TQ-FG3000.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The subwoofer is silent
- Verify that the speaker has a subwoofer output rather than only a headphone jack.
- Match the output and subwoofer input type.
- Check the subwoofer’s power, level and standby controls.
- Review compatibility notes. Pioneer does not guarantee third-party subwoofer compatibility with the TQ-FG3000 digital output.
Audio is delayed
Wireless Bluetooth processing can introduce latency, which is more noticeable in games. Prefer USB, USB-C, HDMI or analog for gaming when the speaker offers those inputs. If a TV has an audio-delay control, adjust it only after selecting the correct wired output mode.
The sound is boomy or thin
Move the speakers away from corners and walls, then adjust the subwoofer level. If the system uses an automatic crossover—REN specifies 80 Hz—avoid stacking additional bass-boost settings on the TV, operating system and speaker at the same time.
Buyer checklist
- Measure the desk, shelf and floor space, including room for a subwoofer if one is planned.
- Write down every PC and TV output before selecting a speaker input.
- Confirm whether the required input is USB, USB-C, 3.5 mm, RCA, optical, Bluetooth, HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
- Verify the channel format for that exact connection; never infer multichannel support from a product’s surround label.
- Check speaker dimensions, power requirements and control placement.
- For bass expansion, match the speaker’s subwoofer output to the subwoofer’s input and read compatibility notes.
- Separate manufacturer specifications from independent listening tests.
- Check current price, stock, warranty and regional model numbers immediately before ordering.
The practical winner is the format that satisfies your connection and placement constraints first. For a small PC-only desk, start with 2.0. For a shared computer-and-TV system, powered bookshelf speakers or a multi-input soundbar are usually easier to integrate. Choose 2.1 when you have space and genuinely want more bass, and choose discrete surround only when every device and connection in the chain is documented for the channels you intend to use.
