GOG is the clear answer. Its voluntary policy allows a refund for up to 30 days after purchase, even if you downloaded, launched, and played the game. Steam’s standard limit is 14 days and less than two hours played. Epic and Ubisoft use essentially the same headline limits as Steam, while EA’s policy depends on launch status and specific technical-failure conditions rather than offering a general 30-day try-and-decide period.
The refund-policy comparison at a glance
“Longer than Steam” can mean more calendar days, more permitted playtime, or both. On the headline rules, only GOG clearly extends the time available after purchase. The other major PC stores either match Steam’s 14-day/two-hour framework or use a narrower, launch-dependent formula.
| Store | Days from purchase | Playtime rule | Download or launch effect | Important eligibility or exception |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | 14 days | Less than 2 hours played | Standard rule is based on the 14-day and playtime limits | Valve says requests outside the limits may still be reviewed, but approval is not guaranteed |
| GOG | Up to 30 days | No two-hour cap stated in the quoted policy | Refund may be requested after download, launch and play | GOG may refuse abusive or unreasonable requests |
| Epic Games Store | 14 days | Less than 2 hours of runtime | Applies to eligible products | PC and Mac products must be marked refundable or self-refundable |
| Ubisoft Store | 14 days | Less than 2 hours played | Digital PC games covered by the stated policy | No longer headline window than Steam |
| EA app / EA.com | 14 days if not launched; 24 hours after first launch | Depends on launch status rather than a general two-hour rule | Launching changes the applicable window | Qualifying technical failures on new releases can receive a 72-hour window within 30 days of release |
These are storefront policy limits, not statutory guarantees. Region, product type, preorder status, early-access status and local consumer law can change the result. Check the product’s current terms at checkout and in the store’s support center.

Why GOG is the strongest Steam alternative for refunds
A full 30 days instead of 14
GOG’s voluntary policy gives you up to 30 days after purchase to ask for a refund. That doubles the calendar period in Steam’s standard rule. The extra time matters when you cannot test a game immediately, need to wait for a patch, or want to see whether your hardware handles a demanding title during a normal play session rather than a short launch check.

Playing the game does not automatically end eligibility
GOG’s published wording expressly allows a refund even when the product was downloaded, launched and played. That is the material difference for readers who want to answer, “Can I refund a game after I played it for more than two hours?” Under this policy, exceeding Steam’s two-hour threshold does not by itself eliminate the request.
The policy is not unlimited
GOG reserves the right to refuse abusive or unreasonable requests. The 30-day rule should therefore be treated as a generous evaluation window, not permission to buy, finish and routinely return games. Repeated patterns that look abusive can be denied even when the purchase is less than 30 days old.
What the 30-day wording does not establish
The quoted GOG wording does not settle every edge case, such as every preorder, early-access product, downloadable add-on or regional statutory right. Product-specific terms can override a broad store rule. If a title has an eligibility label or special launch condition, read that listing before paying.
Steam remains the baseline to beat
The standard rule
Valve says it will issue a refund when a title is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than two hours. Both conditions matter: being under two hours does not preserve the standard guarantee after day 14, and being within 14 days does not preserve it after two hours.

Requests outside the limits
Steam states that requests outside the 14-day or two-hour limits may still be reviewed. That is discretionary, not an entitlement. A support agent can decline the request, so an exception should not be used as a purchasing strategy.
Where to start a Steam request
Use Valve’s support portal at help.steampowered.com, sign in, select the purchase and follow the refund form. Submit the request as soon as you know the game is unsuitable; waiting reduces the chance that an exception can help.
Epic and Ubisoft do not provide a longer headline window
Epic Games Store
Epic’s rule for PC and Mac products is a refund within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of runtime on record. The product must also be labeled refundable or self-refundable. That label is a crucial difference from assuming every item in the catalog qualifies. A title without the required eligibility marking may not receive the standard treatment.

Ubisoft’s stated policy for covered digital PC games uses 14 days and less than two hours played. Those limits match Steam’s headline figures rather than extending them. If your priority is time to test after purchase, Ubisoft does not offer the clear 30-day advantage that GOG does.

How to interpret a tie with Steam
A matching 14-day/two-hour rule can still feel different in practice because stores measure runtime, define eligible products and present support options differently. Do not assume that a game’s availability on a particular launcher changes the underlying rule; read the policy attached to the transaction and product listing.
EA’s policy is launch-dependent, not broadly longer
Before the first launch
EA’s direct-store policy provides a 14-day period when the game has not been launched. This is not equivalent to GOG’s 30 days because launching the game changes the clock and the applicable condition.
After launch
After the first launch, the stated window is 24 hours. That is substantially shorter than Steam’s 14-day period for a title that has been played for less than two hours, so EA is not a general advantage for ordinary try-before-you-keep purchases.

Technical-failure exception for qualifying new releases
EA identifies a special 72-hour rule for qualifying technical failures on new releases, provided the request falls within 30 days of the game’s release. The exception depends on both the technical problem and the release timing; it is not a general 72-hour play-and-decide guarantee for every purchase.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What “more than two weeks” means in real buying decisions
If you need more calendar time
Choose a store whose published window extends beyond 14 days. GOG is the only store in this comparison with a stated 30-day period. The extra days are useful when your schedule, hardware upgrade or expected patch cycle makes a two-week test impractical.
If you expect to play extensively before deciding
GOG is again the outlier because its wording permits download, launch and play before requesting a refund. Steam, Epic and Ubisoft tie eligibility to roughly two hours, while EA’s rule changes once the game is launched. Extensive play can therefore eliminate the normal guarantee on those stores.
If the problem is a technical failure
Document the failure immediately: error messages, crash frequency, hardware details and troubleshooting steps. EA’s special rule is the only specific technical-failure exception stated here, and it applies only to qualifying new releases within the defined 30-day release period. The other policies cited do not promise a comparable technical-failure extension.
Edge cases to verify before you buy
Preorders and early access
The published headline rules do not provide a single, universal treatment for preorders or early-access purchases across all five stores. Check whether the countdown starts at payment, release or first access, and whether time played before full release is counted.

Product eligibility labels
Epic explicitly requires a refundable or self-refundable label for the standard PC and Mac rule. Other stores may also distinguish games from downloadable content, subscriptions, bundles or other digital products. Never infer eligibility solely from the fact that an item is sold in the store.
Regional rights and local law
Store policies can vary by country or region, and statutory consumer protections may provide rights beyond a voluntary storefront policy. The figures above should be treated as the store’s published baseline for the covered transaction, not as a replacement for local law.
Where the money is returned
The policy wording cited here does not establish one universal refund destination for every store, purchase method or region. Before submitting, check whether your transaction can return to the original payment method or whether the store offers another route, such as account credit.

- Record the purchase details. Note the transaction date, product, platform, edition and the account that made the purchase.
- Check the measurable limit. Compare the date with the store’s day window and, where relevant, check recorded runtime or whether the game has been launched.
- Confirm product eligibility. Look for Epic’s refundable or self-refundable designation and review any title-specific terms for bundles, add-ons, preorders or early access.
- Gather a precise reason. State whether the issue is incompatibility, repeated crashes, missing features, an accidental purchase or another concrete problem. For technical failures, include reproducible steps and error details.
- Use the store’s official support flow. Open the account’s purchase history or support center, select the transaction and submit the refund form. On Steam, start at help.steampowered.com.
- Submit promptly and keep the confirmation. Save the request number, date and any follow-up messages. A request outside a guaranteed window is discretionary, so a clear record helps explain the circumstances.
Which store should you use?
Pick GOG when refund flexibility is the deciding factor
GOG is the practical choice when you want up to 30 days and the ability to test after downloading, launching and playing. Its abuse restriction means the policy is designed for genuine evaluation, not repeated full-game rentals.
Use Steam, Epic or Ubisoft when their catalog or features matter more
These stores can still be sensible choices if the title, multiplayer ecosystem or account library is important to you. Go in knowing that the normal protection is approximately 14 days and two hours on Steam and Ubisoft, and 14 days with under two hours plus an eligibility label on Epic.
Treat EA purchases as launch-sensitive
For EA’s direct store, decide whether you are comfortable with the post-launch 24-hour window. If a new release has a qualifying technical failure, check whether the special 72-hour rule within 30 days of release applies before the deadline passes.
Bottom line for shoppers
For a PC game store with a materially longer refund policy than Steam, GOG is the clear answer: up to 30 days, with download, launch and play expressly allowed before requesting a refund, subject to abuse controls. Epic and Ubisoft do not extend Steam’s headline limits, and EA’s launch-dependent rules provide targeted exceptions rather than a broad longer window. Verify the product’s eligibility, regional terms and current checkout policy before purchasing because storefront rules and statutory rights can change.
