To free up room on a PC desk, move hardware and cable bulk off the desktop: start by removing unused cords, then route the remaining cables behind the monitor, under the desk and down a leg. A monitor arm, cable organizers, a dock or an under-desk device mount can help, depending on your equipment and desk. These eight options address different kinds of clutter; they are not a ranked list, and the available sources do not quantify how much space each one saves.
1. A monitor arm
Replacing a monitor’s stand with a compatible arm can open the surface beneath the screen and make it easier to route display and hub cables behind the monitor. It is most useful when the stand occupies a noticeable part of your work area.
Check that the arm supports your monitor and attaches securely to your desk. If you adjust the screen or use a sit-stand desk, leave enough cable slack for movement. HP also suggests routing monitor cables behind the display as part of a broader cable plan: HP’s cable-management guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A tray or basket can hold a power strip, adapters and excess cord length below the tabletop instead of leaving them scattered across the surface or floor. Before choosing one, measure the desk underside and check the intended route to the outlet, including clearance for the power strip and plugs.

Leave slack for adjustable desks and monitor arms, and make sure the installation method suits the desk’s underside. Dell describes trays and baskets as a way to contain power strips and bulky adapters: Dell’s under-desk cable guide.
3. Cable clips
Clips keep frequently used leads—such as a charging cable or headset cord—close to the desk edge rather than trailing across the work surface. They can also help guide a cable along the back of a desk or down a leg.
Use clips suited to the surface and cable size, and place them so a lead can still reach the device without being pulled tight. A clip organizes a route; it does not conceal a bulky power strip or bundle.
4. Reusable cable ties
Reusable ties gather cables that travel together, reducing the number of separate strands visible behind a PC or monitor. Unlike a permanent fastening, a reusable tie can be loosened when you add or replace a device.

Group only cables that follow the same route, and avoid cinching them so tightly that they are difficult to remove or strain connectors. For a clean result, first identify which leads are actually needed.
5. A cable sleeve
A sleeve bundles several cords into one neater run. It can be especially helpful behind a dual-monitor setup, where multiple display and power cables otherwise hang separately. HP specifically suggests sleeves for dual-monitor cable bundles.
Choose a sleeve that accommodates the cables without forcing connectors through too small an opening. If some cables need to move independently, keep those outside the bundle or leave enough slack at the ends.
6. A cable box
A cable box hides a power strip or surplus cord length from view and can reduce visual clutter around the desk. It is different from an under-desk tray: a box contains cables in a covered enclosure, while a tray supports equipment beneath the tabletop.

Check that the box fits the strip and plugs you intend to place inside, and keep access to switches and connections practical. Dell identifies cable boxes as an option for containing excess cord length.
7. A USB-C docking station
For a compatible laptop setup, a USB-C dock can consolidate connections for displays, peripherals, Ethernet and charging into one connection between the laptop and desk. That can reduce the number of cables running directly to the laptop and make it easier to move the computer when needed.
Compatibility matters: confirm that the laptop’s USB-C connection and the dock support the displays, data connections and power delivery your setup requires. A dock reduces cable sprawl only if the devices and connection standard match; it does not eliminate the cables between the dock and your other equipment.

An under-desk mount can move a compatible small computer, dock or USB hub off the work surface. For one specific example, Herman Miller says its Loop Micro Mount supports devices up to 3.3 pounds; that is a product specification, not a general capacity for under-desk mounts. Confirm the chosen mount’s current weight limit, device dimensions and fit before installation.

Herman Miller also describes its Ondo Connectivity Module as a way to route power and data from an under-desk docking station to USB ports on the desktop. The described setup is designed to work with specified Herman Miller monitor arms or to mount directly to the work surface. Those are product-specific arrangements, so check compatibility rather than assuming they apply to other arms or desks. See Herman Miller’s Loop Micro Mount product information and its technology-support products.
Plan the cable route before buying
A simple route keeps cables out of the main work area: behind the monitor, horizontally beneath the tabletop, then down a desk leg toward the outlet. HP recommends auditing cables before adding organizers, while Dell advises measuring the underside, route and outlet clearance first.
- Remove what you do not use. Unplug duplicate or unused cables before deciding how many clips, ties or sleeves you need.
- Map the route. Note which cables need to reach the monitor, PC, dock and outlet, and identify where the desk or monitor moves.
- Measure the fit. Check desk thickness and underside geometry for mounts or trays, plus clearance for adapters, plugs and outlet access.
- Keep movement and maintenance in mind. Leave slack for adjustable equipment and preserve access to power switches and connections.
For practical cable-routing guidance, see HP’s desk cable-management advice and Dell’s recommendations for organizing cables under a desk.
