Which PC-98 emulator should you use? Start with the program that supports your computer, your game’s disk-image format, and the hardware settings that title expects. DOSBox-X is the most thoroughly documented starting point in the available material: its official PC-98 mode is enabled with machine=pc98 and it can also run ordinary DOS software. Neko Project II is a dedicated PC-98 emulator lineage with configurable models, clocks, memory, and sound boards, while Neko Project II Kai is the newer Libretro successor to the older Neko Project II core. T98-Next remains a possible legacy Windows-oriented choice, but current builds and compatibility are not verified by a primary source here.
There is no evidence-based universal winner. Compatibility depends on the exact game or application, host operating system, emulator build or frontend, disk image, and emulated hardware settings. Use the comparison below to choose a starting point, then test the software you actually want to run.
What each emulator is best suited to
The three names do not represent interchangeable releases of one product. They come from different emulator lineages and have different levels of currently documented support.

The broader project also supports DOS applications and Windows 3.x, 9x, and Me. | A flexible DOS package with a documented PC-98 setup and many controls. | Its feature breadth does not prove that every PC-98 title runs correctly. Test the intended software. |
| Neko Project II | The Libretro documentation describes PC-98 disk-image extensions and settings for model, CPU clock, memory, and sound board. That page states that the Neko Project II core has been superseded by Neko Project II Kai. | A dedicated PC-98 lineage; choose the build or frontend that matches your platform. | The cited documentation describes the older core, not a compatibility matrix for every Neko Project II or Kai build. |
| T98-Next | A community overview reports historical goals including 486-class guest emulation, a graphical interface, external modules, and improved compatibility. | A potential legacy Windows-oriented alternative when a particular title or workflow calls for it. | Current official builds, host support, and present-day compatibility are not established by a primary project source. |
These limits matter. A setting documented for DOSBox-X should not be treated as a rule for Neko Project II or T98-Next, and historical descriptions of T98-Next should not be presented as proof of current capability.

Which PC-98 emulator should I use?
Choose DOSBox-X for a documented, general-purpose starting point
DOSBox-X is the clearest first experiment when you want one emulator that can handle PC-98 software alongside conventional DOS programs. The project officially supports PC-98 mode, and its homepage lists release 2026.10.01, dated October 1, 2026. PC-98 mode starts without additional files, although the project guide recommends adding a PC-98-specific font for accurate Japanese character display. It also documents sound, keyboard, graphics, and disk-image controls in one place.
This does not make DOSBox-X automatically more compatible with your game. It makes the setup path and adjustment points easier to identify. If the target uses an unusual PC-98 model, a specific FM board, or a timing-sensitive display mode, you still need to test and tune it.
Choose Neko Project II or Kai when you want a dedicated PC-98 core
Neko Project II is designed around PC-98 hardware rather than being a broad DOS environment. The Libretro documentation exposes choices for the emulated model, CPU clock, memory, and sound board, as well as PC-98 disk-image extensions. Those controls can be useful when a title expects a particular machine configuration.
Do not conflate the names. The documented Libretro Neko Project II core is an older core, and its page says it has been superseded by Neko Project II Kai. “Kai” therefore identifies a successor core in that ecosystem, not merely a spelling variant or a setting inside the old core. The available material does not establish that every standalone Neko Project II build and every Kai build behave identically, so select the core your frontend actually provides and consult its own options.
Consider T98-Next only when its specific workflow is the reason
A community overview describes T98-Next’s historical aims: emulating a 486-class guest, providing a graphical interface, supporting external modules, and improving compatibility. Those details explain why older Windows users may remember it as an alternative, but they do not establish which builds remain available, which modern Windows versions they support, or how they compare with current DOSBox-X and Neko Project II releases.
If a legacy title already has a known T98-Next configuration, trying that build can be sensible. For a new installation, treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed current solution. Keep a second emulator available so that a missing build or an input, sound, or disk-image problem does not stop the project.

Use five decision questions instead of a speed ranking
- What is the exact target? Identify the game or application, release region, and whether it came on floppy disks or a hard-disk image.
- Which host can you run? Check whether a maintained build or frontend exists for your operating system before choosing a core.
- What image format do you have? PC-98 software commonly uses HDI or floppy formats rather than the IMG files associated with ordinary DOS setups.
- Which hardware does it expect? Model, CPU clock, memory, graphics timing, and FM sound-board choices can affect behavior.
- How much configuration do you want? DOSBox-X provides a broad, documented control surface; a dedicated core may be more natural if your frontend already manages PC-98 settings.
No cited source supplies controlled compatibility or performance testing across all three emulators. Avoid choosing on unsupported claims that one is universally faster, more accurate, or more compatible.

How do I run PC-98 games in DOSBox-X?
The following is a practical starting configuration based on the DOSBox-X PC-98 guide. Use only software, disk images, fonts, and ROM files that you are entitled to use.
1. Install a current DOSBox-X build
Use the build appropriate for your operating system. The project homepage identifies release 2026.10.01 as dated October 1, 2026. Keep the version number with your configuration notes, because behavior and available options can change between builds.
2. Enable PC-98 mode
You can set the machine in the configuration file:
machine=pc98
Or start directly from a terminal with:
dosbox-x -set machine=pc98
DOSBox-X can start in PC-98 mode without extra files. If the program opens in a normal DOS machine instead, check that the option was placed in the configuration file used by that shortcut or that the command-line switch was passed to the DOSBox-X executable you launched.
3. Add a PC-98 font for Japanese text
The guide recommends a font designed for PC-98 character display. It documents several approaches, including using FONT.ROM, the included FREECG98.BMP, TrueType-font output, and FONTX2 configuration options. Start with one documented method and change it only if glyphs are missing, garbled, or rendered with the wrong proportions. A game can run while its menus remain unreadable if the font is not configured correctly.
4. Provide sound resources only when needed
Some games require SOUND.ROM for music and sound effects. DOSBox-X also lets you select an FM board emulation. The guide says board86 should work fine in most cases, so use that as the initial board choice rather than changing several sound settings at once. If a title is silent, distorted, or fails during sound initialization, verify the required ROM file and then try the board option appropriate to that software.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
5. Leave the GDC clock at its default first
DOSBox-X’s guide recommends the default 2.5 MHz GDC clock unless a particular title needs 5 MHz. It notes that some games require 2.5 MHz and very few require 5 MHz. This is configuration advice for DOSBox-X, not a universal timing rule for other emulators. Change the clock only after confirming that the target behaves incorrectly at the default.
6. Select a keyboard layout
Readers outside Japan can use the PC-98 keyboard-layout options to force an IBM/U.S. layout. This is useful when a game expects PC-98 key positions but your physical keyboard is not Japanese. Test movement, function keys, escape, kana, and modifier combinations in a menu before beginning a long play session.
7. Mount the correct disk image
PC-98 images may be HDI hard-disk images or floppy formats, not the IMG format familiar from standard DOS setups. DOSBox-X documents both MOUNT and IMGMOUNT. A directory-based DOS program can begin with a mounted folder:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMOUNT C C:PC98GAMES
An image-based title requires the image-mount command and the image type supported by your build. For example, an HDI workflow may look like:
IMGMOUNT A game.hdi -t hdi
Use the command help in your installed build if an image is rejected, and do not rename a floppy image to make it look like an HDI. The filename extension does not change the underlying format.
8. Test one title before building a library
Boot the target, confirm that its text is legible, check sound, and exercise saving and loading. Record the machine, GDC clock, sound board, font method, and image type that worked. If the title fails, change one variable at a time so you know which adjustment fixed the problem.

What should I configure in Neko Project II?
The available Libretro documentation identifies four useful groups of controls:
- Model: choose the PC-98 model exposed by your core when a program expects a specific machine.
- CPU clock: adjust timing for software that is sensitive to the emulated processor speed.
- Memory: select the amount expected by the title or its installer.
- Sound board: choose the board exposed by the core when music or effects are missing or incorrect.
The same documentation covers PC-98 disk-image extensions. Exact option names and menu placement depend on the Libretro frontend and whether you are using the older Neko Project II core or Neko Project II Kai. Verify the active core in the frontend before troubleshooting; changing a setting in one core will not alter another.
Because the cited page describes the older core and says Kai superseded it, do not use its option list as a promise that every Kai build exposes identical controls. Start with Kai when it is the maintained choice in your platform’s core list, then use the options visible in that installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does T98-Next still work with PC-98 games?
It may work for particular legacy setups, but the current status cannot be stated broadly from the available evidence. A community overview records historical goals and features, not a present-day official compatibility table or supported-build list. That means you should verify three things before relying on it:
- the executable launches on your host operating system;
- your game’s disk-image format is accepted; and
- the title’s keyboard, graphics, timing, and sound behave correctly.
If any of those checks fail, switch to DOSBox-X or a Neko Project II-family core rather than assuming the game itself is incompatible. Preserve the exact T98-Next build and settings if you are supporting an old installation, because reproducing a historical environment may be the main reason it works.
Common problems and targeted fixes
The program starts, but Japanese text is unreadable
Configure a PC-98-specific font. Try the documented FONT.ROM, FREECG98.BMP, TrueType, or FONTX2 method appropriate to your DOSBox-X setup. Confirm that the game is actually using the configured font rather than a separate font file on its disk image.

Music or sound effects are missing
Check whether the game requires SOUND.ROM, then confirm the selected FM board. In DOSBox-X, board86 is the guide’s general starting recommendation. Avoid changing the GDC clock and sound board simultaneously, since that makes the cause harder to identify.
The image will not mount
Determine whether it is an HDI hard-disk image or a floppy image, and use the corresponding IMGMOUNT type. A normal directory mount with MOUNT is not a substitute for mounting a bootable disk image.
The game runs too quickly or fails at a timing-sensitive point
In DOSBox-X, return the GDC clock to 2.5 MHz first. Move to 5 MHz only when the specific title requires it. In Neko Project II-family cores, inspect the CPU-clock and model options instead; DOSBox-X’s GDC advice does not transfer automatically.
Keys do not match the manual
Review the PC-98 keyboard-layout setting. For a non-Japanese keyboard, try the documented IBM/U.S. layout, then test function and modifier keys inside the game’s configuration screen.
How to make a reliable emulator choice
- Write down the exact title, disk-image format, and region.
- Try DOSBox-X PC-98 mode if you want the most fully documented general setup.
- Try Neko Project II Kai, or the older Neko Project II core only when your frontend specifically requires it, if dedicated PC-98 hardware controls are more important.
- Use T98-Next for a known legacy configuration, not on the assumption that its historical goals represent current support.
- Keep a settings note for every working combination and change only one option per troubleshooting attempt.
This process gives you a defensible result for your software instead of an unsupported ranking. The correct emulator is the one that can boot your legally obtained image, display its text, reproduce its input and sound, and save reliably on the host you actually use.
