A second click on Pay does not necessarily create a second charge because payment systems can recognize and suppress a repeat of the same payment request. The key safeguard is usually server-side idempotency, not the button itself. It is not a universal guarantee: the merchant’s integration and the payment provider’s rules determine whether a repeat is treated as the original request or a new payment.
What happens when you click Pay twice?
The page may try to prevent a second click, but a button alone cannot reliably determine whether the first payment reached the payment service. A slow connection, a missing response, or a second click can leave the merchant’s system unsure whether the first attempt succeeded. PayPal lists repeated button presses, network latency, and server response problems among causes associated with duplicate-transaction reports. PayPal’s duplicate-transactions guidance recommends checking transaction status and using idempotency, alongside clearer payer feedback and error handling.
In a well-designed integration, the server attaches a unique identifier—an idempotency key—to a payment request. If the same logical request is sent again with the same key, the payment provider can recognize it as a retry and return or expose the first attempt’s result rather than perform the payment action again. Stripe says it saves and reuses the first request’s status code and response body; PayPal says a repeated request ID returns the original result; Adyen says a repeated request can return the first attempt’s response. See the providers’ documentation for Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen.

When does the protection apply?
Idempotency works only when the integration uses the same key for the same logical operation and follows the provider’s rules. A newly generated key can make a retry look like a new payment. Changing request parameters while reusing a key may cause an error or other provider-specific behavior. Simultaneous requests also have provider-specific handling, so a developer should consult the documentation for the particular endpoint rather than assume all repeats are treated alike.
These are examples from the providers’ documentation, not universal rules:

| Provider | Documented key retention | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Keys may be removed automatically once they are at least 24 hours old. | Reusing a key after it has been removed can create a new request. Stripe compares the new request’s parameters with the original and reports an error if they differ. Stripe API reference |
| PayPal | Up to 45 days in the cited REST request guidance. | Check whether the specific endpoint supports the request ID and follow its rules. PayPal REST API request guidance |
| Adyen | 7 to 14 days after first submission. | Adyen documents duplicate and in-progress responses and recommends reusing the same key for a safe retry after a timeout. Adyen API idempotency |
These retention periods are technical limits in the cited documentation, not statistics about how often duplicate charges happen. Provider behavior can change; merchants implementing payments should check the current API reference for the endpoint they use.

- Wait for the checkout or payment status to update. A missing or delayed confirmation does not by itself prove the payment failed.
- Check the order or transaction history. PayPal specifically advises checking transaction status when investigating a possible duplicate.
- Do not submit a fresh payment just because the first response is missing. A new attempt may be treated as a separate operation. Safe retries depend on the merchant’s integration and, where supported, reuse of the same idempotency key.
- If you still cannot tell what happened, contact the merchant or payment provider. The right next step depends on the checkout and payment method; there is no single support process that applies to every transaction.
What merchants and developers need to get right
A disabled or loading Pay button can reduce accidental repeat clicks and reassure the customer, but it is not a substitute for server-side request handling. The payment integration needs to create and retain a key for each logical operation, reuse it for retries of that operation, and handle the provider’s response and status checks correctly. It should also account for the provider’s key-retention period, parameter-matching rules, endpoint support, and concurrent-request behavior. Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen document different details, so implementations should follow the chosen provider’s current API guidance rather than treat idempotency as a universal setting.
