Short answer: the S-400 has the larger advertised engagement range on paper, especially when its 40N6 missile is quoted at up to 400 kilometers. That figure is not a universally demonstrated combat radius: the missile’s deployment status and the radar support needed to use its full range remain uncertain in open sources. Patriot has less transparent official range data, but its PAC-3 family has the clearer publicly documented record against ballistic and hypersonic threats, including a reported interception of a Russian Kinzhal over Kyiv in May 2023.

These are air-defense families rather than single missiles. A useful comparison must separate the missile loaded on a launcher, the radar’s field of view, the target being engaged, the interceptor’s guidance and kill mechanism, battery placement, networking, logistics, and the evidence from actual combat.

What Patriot and S-400 actually are

“Patriot” and “S-400” each describe an integrated surface-to-air missile system with several components and missile types. Neither has one fixed range or one universal mission.

Patriot is a modular battery

A Patriot battery combines a phased-array radar, an engagement control station, launchers, power and communications equipment, and interceptor missiles. The missile loaded in a particular battery determines much of its performance. PAC-2 and PAC-3 are not interchangeable in guidance, warhead design, or intended target set.

S-400 is a mobile, layered family

An S-400 unit uses a mobile command element, acquisition and engagement radars, launchers, and several interceptor families. The design supports engagements at different distances, but public sources do not provide a complete, independently verified picture of which missiles are routinely deployed with every unit or how often the longest-range 40N6 is available.

That distinction matters because a published maximum can describe a missile under favorable conditions, while a deployed battery may use a different interceptor, face a low-altitude target below the radar horizon, or be constrained by electronic warfare, target maneuvering, rules of engagement, or the number of ready missiles.

Range: advertised maximum versus usable coverage

The most repeated comparison is “400 kilometers versus 60 kilometers.” That is misleading unless the figures are labeled by source, missile, target, and confidence level.

System or component Range figure What the figure means Evidence and qualification
S-400 40N6 Up to 400 km Advertised or reported maximum engagement envelope The Center for Strategic and International Studies says the 40N6’s current deployment status is unclear and questions whether S-400 radar capabilities can let the missile use its full maximum range.
Patriot phased-array radar More than 150 km Radar detection range cited for the configuration discussed A NATO fact sheet figure quoted by the Congressional Research Service in its 2025 report update; it is a radar figure, not a universal interceptor range.
Patriot interceptor in the configuration cited by CRS About 20 km Interceptor range for that specific configuration and target context Congressional Research Service, 2025. Official Patriot range and coverage figures are not publicly available.
PAC-3 MSE Up to about 60 km Explainer figure for the missile’s engagement range Stated by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence in 2026; it should not be treated as an independently verified, universal radius for every target and engagement geometry.

Why the 400-kilometer S-400 number needs caution

The 40N6 is associated with the S-400’s headline long-range claim. A missile cannot exploit that distance simply because its propulsion system can travel that far. The battery must detect and track the target, maintain a usable engagement-quality track, transmit guidance, and account for the target’s altitude and line of sight. CSIS specifically notes uncertainty about both the missile’s fielded status and whether the S-400 radar can support the full advertised envelope.

For a high-altitude, cooperative aircraft, a long-range engagement may be more plausible than for a low-flying cruise missile whose radar line of sight is blocked by terrain. A 400-kilometer figure therefore describes a best-case or claimed envelope, not a guaranteed circular shield around every launcher.

Why Patriot does not have one honest headline number

The Congressional Research Service states that “Official PATRIOT ranges and coverages are not available.” Public figures vary by PAC variant, target type, and the configuration being described. The CRS-cited NATO figure of more than 150 kilometers refers to the radar, while the same discussion gives about 20 kilometers for an interceptor in the cited configuration. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence describes PAC-3 MSE as reaching up to about 60 kilometers, but that ministry figure is not a universal promise for every target.

Radar range and interceptor range answer different questions. A radar may see a track well beyond the distance at which a particular missile can engage it. Conversely, a missile may have theoretical kinematic reach that cannot be used against a low or maneuvering target because the battery cannot maintain the required track.

Radar, field of view, and networked architecture

Patriot’s legacy sector coverage

Patriot’s legacy radar has a field of view of about 120 degrees. A battery must be oriented so that its radar sector covers the expected threat axis; the system is not automatically a 360-degree shield simply because its radar can detect objects at long distance. Battery placement, terrain, neighboring sensors, and the direction of attack all affect defended coverage.

LTAMDS and the move toward 360-degree sensing

The Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, or LTAMDS, is intended to provide 360-degree coverage and multimission sensing against aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and unmanned systems. It represents an architectural improvement rather than a claim that every existing Patriot battery already has all-around coverage. When evaluating a unit, identify which radar generation is actually deployed.

S-400 sensor and command elements

S-400 architecture combines acquisition and engagement radars with mobile command and launcher elements. Layered radars and multiple interceptor families can support engagements at different distances. Open sources, however, do not establish how often the longest-range missile is carried, which radar is providing the track in a given engagement, or how electronic warfare and radar horizon reduce the advertised envelope.

Detection is not the same as a firing solution

A sensor can detect an object without producing the track quality needed for an intercept. The target’s radar cross-section, altitude, speed, maneuvering, jamming, clutter, and the presence of other sensors all matter. Networked cueing can extend practical reaction time, but it does not remove the geometric limits imposed by the horizon or the seeker’s ability to discriminate the target.

Interceptors: the central technical difference

PAC-2: proximity-fuzed blast fragmentation

PAC-2 interceptors use proximity detonation. The missile explodes near the target and relies on a blast and fragmentation pattern to damage or destroy it. This approach is suited to aircraft and some missile targets, but it is not the same terminal method used by the newer PAC-3 family against ballistic-missile warheads.

PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE: hit-to-kill terminal defense

PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE use an onboard active seeker and a kinetic hit-to-kill approach aimed at the ballistic-missile warhead itself. PAC-3 MSE is the current-generation PAC-3 variant described by CRS as having expanded performance. The interceptor’s job is to collide with the incoming warhead at high speed rather than rely primarily on a nearby explosive charge.

S-400 interceptor families

S-400 can employ several interceptor types to cover different engagement distances. CSIS notes that interceptors in current use do not employ Patriot-style hit-to-kill ballistic-missile-defense technology. A future or limited 77N6 capability has been discussed, but open reporting does not establish a broadly fielded, combat-proven 77N6 fleet.

This is why range and ballistic-missile defense must be evaluated separately. A long-range surface-to-air missile may be excellent against aircraft and still offer a different level of terminal protection against a maneuvering ballistic warhead.

What each system is optimized to do

Comparison axis Patriot S-400
Primary design emphasis Layered air defense with a mature ballistic-missile-defense role through PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE, alongside aircraft and cruise-missile defense. Mobile, layered air defense intended to engage aircraft and other aerodynamic targets at several distances; the precise ballistic-missile capability depends on interceptor and configuration.
Terminal kill method PAC-2 uses proximity blast fragmentation; PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE use active-seeker hit-to-kill interception. Current publicly described interceptors do not use the same Patriot-style hit-to-kill method; a 77N6 capability has been discussed but is not clearly established as broadly deployed.
Radar coverage Legacy radar field of view about 120 degrees; LTAMDS is intended to provide 360-degree, multimission coverage. Multiple mobile acquisition and engagement radars support layered coverage, with practical performance dependent on sensor, target, and deployment conditions.
Headline range No single official public number; CRS cites radar above 150 km and about 20 km interceptor range for one configuration, while Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence gives up to about 60 km for PAC-3 MSE. 40N6 is often reported at up to 400 km, but deployment status and radar support for the full range are uncertain.
Best-supported public role Recent combat use against ballistic and hypersonic threats, with publicly documented Ukrainian employment. Long-range Russian air-defense deployment, including Kaliningrad; independently verified combat evidence for ballistic-missile interception is thinner in open sources.

Can Patriot intercept an S-400 missile?

In principle, a Patriot battery could attempt to engage an S-400-launched missile if the incoming missile entered the Patriot’s defended engagement geometry, the radar produced a usable track, the correct interceptor was available, and the fire-control system classified it as an eligible target. Whether that is feasible in a particular encounter depends on launch point, trajectory, altitude, speed, maneuvering, radar horizon, reaction time, and rules of engagement.

There is no publicly verified combat example establishing a general Patriot-versus-S-400 missile interception capability. It would be incorrect to infer one from the fact that PAC-3 can intercept some ballistic threats. A PAC-3 engagement against a ballistic-missile warhead is a different problem from engaging a maneuvering surface-to-air missile during its boost, midcourse, or terminal flight.

The practical question is usually not “Can Patriot defeat the S-400?” but “Can this Patriot battery detect and engage this specific incoming track before impact, with an interceptor suited to the target and enough time remaining?” The answer can change from one battery position and attack geometry to another.

What combat evidence shows

Patriot’s documented Ukrainian role

Patriot has a clearer publicly documented recent combat role. CSIS records the first reported Ukrainian Patriot interception of a Russian Kinzhal over Kyiv in May 2023. The Associated Press describes Patriot use against high-speed ballistic and hypersonic threats while emphasizing that a city remains vulnerable when batteries are absent, out of position, or short of interceptors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This evidence demonstrates operational use, not an invulnerability guarantee. A battery protects the area its radar and interceptors can cover from its current position. It cannot defend every city simultaneously, and a successful engagement may consume one of a limited number of ready missiles.

S-400’s public record

S-400 units are deployed for Russian air defense, including in Kaliningrad. Open-source evidence is thinner for independently verified ballistic-missile interception under combat conditions. That limited public record does not prove the system is ineffective; it means the available evidence is less transparent about the longest-range missile’s fielding and about successful terminal ballistic engagements.

Why kill-rate claims are not reliable here

No independently verified universal Patriot-versus-S-400 kill-rate percentage is established in the available public evidence. Engagement outcomes depend on target type, salvo size, warning time, battery placement, electronic warfare, interceptor availability, and whether the claim counts launches, tracks, or confirmed target destruction. A single percentage would conceal those conditions rather than clarify them.

Mobility, logistics, saturation, and cost

Mobility helps, but setup and orientation still matter

Both systems use mobile elements, allowing commanders to reposition radars and launchers. Mobility can complicate an attacker’s planning and reduce the risk of a fixed-site strike. It also introduces setup, communications, power, reload, and coordination requirements. A mobile launcher that is moving, masked, disconnected, or oriented away from the threat is not providing the same coverage as a fully integrated battery in position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interceptor inventory can be the limiting factor

Defended-area claims often assume missiles are available for every track. In a saturation attack, the number of ready interceptors, launcher reload time, target prioritization, and the ability to maintain fire-control tracks may matter more than the nominal maximum range. The Associated Press reported that more than 600 PAC-3 MSE interceptors had been delivered in 2025, with planned annual production capacity of 2,000 by 2030. Those figures describe deliveries and planned capacity, not a guarantee that any country has a particular stockpile at a particular moment.

Patriot battery cost is a system cost

CSIS estimated in 2022 that a newly produced Patriot battery including missiles cost about $1.1 billion. That is a system-level estimate, not the price of one interceptor or a universal current procurement quote. Training, spares, radar generation, command equipment, transport, sustainment, and additional missiles can materially change the total cost of fielding and operating a defense network.

How to compare Patriot and S-400 for a real scenario

  1. Define the target. An aircraft, cruise missile, drone, short-range ballistic missile, maneuvering hypersonic weapon, and another surface-to-air missile present different detection and interception problems.
  2. Identify the exact interceptor. Record whether the Patriot battery carries PAC-2, PAC-3, or PAC-3 MSE, and which S-400 interceptor family is being discussed. “Patriot range” and “S-400 range” without this step are incomplete labels.
  3. Check the radar and field of view. Determine whether the Patriot unit uses a legacy sector radar or an LTAMDS-class sensor, what S-400 radar is available, and whether terrain or the radar horizon blocks the target.
  4. Separate detection range from engagement range. A radar track beyond 150 kilometers does not mean a PAC-3 can engage every target at that distance. Likewise, a 40N6 advertised at 400 kilometers needs an engagement-quality track and suitable geometry.
  5. Evaluate the kill mechanism. For ballistic threats, ask whether the interceptor is designed for terminal hit-to-kill performance or relies on proximity fragmentation, and whether the target is a warhead, reentry vehicle, aircraft, or decoy.
  6. Account for networking and placement. Include external sensors, command links, battery orientation, neighboring batteries, and the defended asset’s location. A system’s theoretical envelope is not the defended area of one isolated launcher.
  7. Count missiles and reloads. Estimate how many interceptors are ready, how quickly launchers can be reloaded, and whether the defender must reserve missiles for higher-priority tracks.
  8. Use combat evidence carefully. Give more weight to independently documented engagements than to marketing range claims, while noting that the absence of public evidence is not proof that an engagement never occurred.

Which system is “better”?

There is no single winner across all missions. If the question is maximum advertised reach against suitable high-altitude aerodynamic targets, the S-400 has the paper advantage because of the reported 40N6 envelope. That advantage is conditional on the missile being deployed, the radar supporting the track, and the engagement geometry allowing the range to be used.

If the question is publicly documented terminal defense against ballistic and hypersonic threats, Patriot PAC-3 and PAC-3 MSE have the stronger open combat record. Their hit-to-kill design addresses a different problem from long-range aircraft interception, and the Ukrainian record provides evidence of operational use. The trade-off is a smaller defended footprint per battery than the S-400’s advertised maximum and a dependence on scarce, expensive interceptors and careful placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For procurement or operational analysis, compare the complete defended architecture rather than the longest number in a brochure: radar coverage, interceptor type, target class, networking, mobility, reload and stockpile, saturation behavior, and independently documented performance. Those factors determine whether a battery protects a specific city, airbase, formation, or critical facility.
