There is no universally best patio-furniture material. Choose by matching the complete piece—frame, surface, hardware, finish, and cushions—to your weather exposure, maintenance tolerance, moving and storage needs, appearance, comfort, and budget. “Wicker” describes a weave rather than a specific substance, while “plastic” can mean molded resin or dense HDPE lumber, so the label alone is not enough.
How to compare patio-furniture materials
Start with the conditions the furniture will actually face. A covered balcony, a wet coastal deck, and an exposed inland patio impose different demands. Then evaluate the whole assembly instead of judging only the visible surface.
- Identify every material. Record the frame, woven strand or slats, fasteners, finish, feet, and cushions. A woven chair may have synthetic resin over an aluminum frame, for example.
- Check exposure. Consider direct sun, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, salt air, wind, tree sap, and whether the furniture can be moved under a roof.
- Decide how much care is realistic. “Low maintenance” still means removing debris, washing appropriately, checking hardware, and following the maker’s instructions.
- Plan for movement and storage. Lightweight pieces are easier to reposition but can shift in wind. Heavier pieces feel stable but are harder to carry or store.
- Verify replacement support. Ask whether cushions, slings, glides, fasteners, and touch-up products are available for the exact model.
Material comparisons from Outdoor Furniture Authority and the BBQGuys materials chart support this whole-product approach. Neither source establishes a universal service life, warranty period, or price range for all furniture categories.

| Material or construction | Useful strengths | Tradeoffs and checks | Likely fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Natural warmth, substantial feel, and distinct species-specific appearance. Teak is commonly used as an outdoor hardwood. | Species, finish, shade, and exposure affect color change, weathering, and decay. Care instructions differ by product. | People who value a natural look and accept finish changes and periodic care. |
| Aluminum | Relatively light and corrosion resistant; easy to reposition; available in many finishes. | Light frames can move in wind. Scratched or chipped coatings expose vulnerable areas, and alloy, joints, and workmanship vary. | Patios where furniture is moved often or stored seasonally. |
| Steel | Heavier feel, rigidity, and broad styling options through painted or coated finishes. | More dependent on an intact protective finish. Inspect chips, scratches, welds, edges, and areas where water collects. | Wind-prone locations or buyers who prioritize weight and a solid feel. |
| Wicker | Woven texture and relaxed seating shapes; synthetic all-weather strands can simplify routine cleaning. | “Wicker” is a weave, not a material. Check whether strands are natural or synthetic, the frame underneath, weave tension, UV exposure, debris traps, and cushions. | People who want a woven appearance and will verify the entire construction. |
| Molded resin plastic | Often light, easy to wash, and stackable. | Formulation, UV behavior, heat tolerance, hardware, and rigidity differ by product. Do not generalize one maker’s claims to all resin furniture. | Occasional seating, compact storage, and simple routine cleaning. |
| HDPE/poly lumber | Dense boards can provide substantial furniture with little or no refinishing in normal use. | Heavier than many molded pieces; color, UV protection, fasteners, and care remain product-specific. | Buyers seeking a wood-like profile with a cleaning-focused maintenance routine. |
Wood: warm appearance with species-specific care
Wood gives a patio a natural grain and a substantial feel that manufactured materials imitate but do not duplicate. The species, moisture exposure, finish, and location determine how that appearance changes. Outdoor wood is affected by weathering and decay, so “wood” is not a single performance category.

Teak and other outdoor species
Teak is commonly positioned as an outdoor hardwood. Left untreated, teak may gradually weather to a silvery gray; that color change is an appearance shift, not proof that every piece is failing. Other species can have different movement, checking, and finish requirements. Confirm the species and the maker’s recommended products before applying oil, stain, or sealant.
Protecting and maintaining wood
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory states, “The best way to protect wood furniture or artwork (e.g., wood carvings) from weathering is to cover it with a roof.” Read the technical publication at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory. A roof or substantial cover reduces direct wetting and sunlight, but it does not eliminate the need to remove standing water, clean debris, inspect joints, or follow the finish instructions for the model.
- Keep leaves, soil, and wet cushions from sitting on the surface.
- Inspect end grain, joints, and feet for swelling, cracks, or soft areas.
- Use only the cleaner, oil, stain, or sealer specified for the species and finish.
- Allow covers and furniture to dry as directed; trapping moisture can create its own problems.
Metal: separate aluminum from steel
“Metal patio furniture” hides an important distinction. Aluminum is comparatively light and corrosion resistant, while steel is heavier and relies more on an intact protective coating. Exact alloy, wall thickness, weld quality, fasteners, and finish determine how a particular chair performs.
Aluminum
Aluminum suits people who rearrange furniture, carry it into storage, or want a frame that is less prone to corrosion than ordinary unprotected steel. Its low weight can be a disadvantage on exposed patios: a light chair or table may move in strong wind unless its design, feet, or anchoring prevent it. Examine welds, leg joints, drain paths, and coating continuity rather than assuming every aluminum frame is equivalent.

Steel
Steel provides a heavier, more planted feel and can support rigid designs. Paint, powder coating, galvanizing, or another finish separates the steel from moisture and oxygen; a chip or deep scratch is therefore a maintenance issue. Inspect undersides, tube openings, fasteners, and horizontal ledges where water can remain. Touch-up products must be compatible with the original finish, and any rust treatment should follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Metal-specific checks
- Run a hand over edges and welds to find sharp spots or coating breaks.
- Look under caps and around fasteners, not only at the showroom-facing surfaces.
- Confirm whether cushions or slings are replaceable independently of the frame.
- In coastal or heavily salted environments, ask for the maker’s cleaning frequency and corrosion guidance.
Wicker: a weave, not a material
Wicker describes the woven construction. Traditional natural wicker may use plant fibers, while outdoor furniture commonly uses synthetic resin strands. The frame beneath may be aluminum, steel, wood, or another material, and that frame often determines weight and corrosion behavior.
What to inspect
- Strand type: Ask whether the weave is natural fiber or synthetic resin and what UV exposure the maker supports.
- Frame: Check frame material, welds, joints, feet, and drainage points separately from the weave.
- Tension and edges: Look for loose strands, crushed corners, uneven spacing, and sharp cut ends.
- Debris and cushions: Dense patterns can trap leaves and moisture. Seat cushions need their own fabric, filling, and drying instructions.
Synthetic weave can simplify cleaning, but it is not automatically weatherproof or maintenance-free. Heat, sunlight, abrasion, and poorly supported spans can affect different strands differently. Replace or repair loose sections according to the maker’s method rather than pulling the pattern tighter yourself.

Molded resin
Molded resin pieces are often light, stackable, and straightforward to wash. Verify whether the product is intended for prolonged direct sun, how it handles high heat, and whether screws, hinges, or embedded metal parts need separate care. A maker’s formulation and UV claims apply to that product, not to every plastic chair sold under a similar description.
HDPE or poly lumber
For one specific example, POLYWOOD states that its lumber frames use 100% HDPE, with UV protectant and color integrated into the lumber. The same manufacturer says routine cleaning uses soap, water, and a soft-bristle brush. Those are manufacturer claims about its own products; confirm the construction and instructions for any other HDPE furniture before applying them.
HDPE furniture can deliver a substantial, wood-like profile without routine refinishing, but it can also be heavier than molded resin. Check board thickness, fastener material, drainage, heat exposure, and whether replacement hardware is sold.

Match the material to your patio conditions
Fully exposed, rainy locations
Prioritize drainage, finish integrity, cover or storage options, and cushion drying. A roof is especially valuable for wood, while coated metals need inspection after scratches. Synthetic weave and plastic still require debris removal and model-specific cleaning.

Coastal or salty air
Salt accelerates corrosion risks for vulnerable metal finishes and hardware. Compare the maker’s coating and cleaning guidance, rinse as directed, and inspect joints and fasteners regularly. Do not call a frame rust-proof without model-specific evidence.
Windy patios
Weight and footprint matter. Steel or a heavier HDPE design may stay put more readily than a light aluminum or molded-resin piece, but anchoring and layout can matter as much as material. Cushions and loose accessories may still need storage.
Sunny, hot patios
Evaluate UV guidance for the exact finish, weave, plastic formulation, and cushion fabric. Shade reduces exposure for every material. Avoid assuming that an integrated UV additive in one manufacturer’s lumber exists in all plastic products.
Small spaces and seasonal storage
Stackability and carrying weight often outweigh maximum mass. Molded resin and aluminum can be easier to move, while folding or nesting designs may reduce storage volume. Confirm that repeated folding does not loosen joints or abrade finishes.

Care routines that prevent avoidable damage
Low maintenance means fewer specialized treatments, not zero work. Use the model’s care sheet as the controlling instruction, especially for finishes, cushions, hardware, and pressure-washing limits.
Routine inspection
- Remove leaves, grit, bird droppings, and standing water before they remain on the surface.
- Tighten loose fasteners with the specified tool and torque guidance, if provided.
- Check feet, glides, welds, woven edges, and cushion seams at the start and end of the outdoor season.
- Dry cushions completely before stacking or covering them.
Cleaning synthetic weave
For POLYWOOD’s synthetic weave specifically, its care article recommends removing cushions, brushing or vacuuming away debris, washing with mild dish soap and water using a soft brush, rinsing, and drying. It says not to pressure-wash its weave. That procedure is brand-specific and should not be generalized to every woven product.
When to cover or store
Use a breathable, correctly fitted cover or move furniture under a roof when the maker recommends it. Covers protect from some exposure but can trap condensation if fitted or ventilated poorly. Store cushions separately when they will not be used, and follow the fabric maker’s drying and storage directions.

Buying checklist: inspect the complete piece
- Write down the exposure: direct sun hours, rain, snow, salt, wind, and available roof or storage.
- Map the construction: frame, visible material, weave or boards, fasteners, finish, feet, and cushions.
- Test movement: lift, drag, stack, or fold the piece as you will at home.
- Inspect hidden areas: underside coatings, welds, drainage holes, screw heads, and woven corners.
- Read care limits: approved cleaners, pressure-washing warnings, cover requirements, and seasonal storage rules.
- Confirm parts: replacement cushions, slings, glides, hardware, and touch-up products for the exact model.
- Compare the whole cost: purchase price plus covers, storage, refinishing supplies, replacement cushions, and transport effort.
What “longest lasting” really means
No named, comparable statistic establishes one universal lifespan for wood, metal, wicker, and plastic. Longevity depends on construction, exposure, finish, care, and whether individual components can be repaired. A well-protected piece in a sheltered yard can outlast a poorly finished piece of the same nominal material in full weather. Treat claims such as “weatherproof,” “rust-proof,” or “maintenance-free” as model-specific statements that require supporting documentation.
Bottom line: choose by priorities, not labels
Choose wood when natural grain and a substantial feel justify species-specific care and possible color change. Choose aluminum when low weight and corrosion resistance help you move or store furniture; choose steel when a heavier feel matters and you will protect its finish. Choose wicker for a woven look only after identifying the strand and frame. Choose molded resin for light, stackable simplicity or HDPE lumber for a denser, wood-like form with the manufacturer’s stated cleaning routine. In every case, compare the complete construction and the care instructions—not just the headline material.
