Neither control method is an official all-purpose winner. Choose a controller if you naturally prefer gamepad movement and its controller-oriented interface. Choose keyboard and mouse if you want cursor-based interaction, keyboard bindings, and mouse navigation. Grinding Gear Games’ published notes document different controls and interface behavior, but they do not report comparative tests of accuracy, clear speed, damage, or endgame efficiency.
If you are undecided, use the same character and repeat the same activities with both methods. Pay particular attention to ordinary combat, targeting, inventory work, and the menus you use most. That practical trial will tell you more than a claim that one device is universally faster.
What the official notes establish
Path of Exile 2 has distinct controller and keyboard-and-mouse behavior rather than one identical control layer. The clearest evidence comes from Grinding Gear Games’ Early Access patch notes:

- Update 0.2.0h gives a concrete inventory example: keyboard-and-mouse players bulk-move currency with Ctrl plus right-click, while gamepad players hold Triangle or Y.Read the 0.2.0h notes
- Update 0.1.1 included controller-focused interface changes, including a bindable action to show or hide item and object labels and larger text in some controller UI locations. Those are historical patch changes, so a later update may have altered the exact presentation.Read the 0.1.1 notes
These notes demonstrate that the two methods can expose different workflows. They do not establish a measured advantage in reaction time, aiming precision, movement speed, damage output, survivability, or high-level economy management.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Choose a controller when gamepad movement feels more natural
Movement and character feel
A controller is the sensible starting point when you prefer analog-stick movement and a compact set of buttons over cursor movement and a large keyboard layout. The recommendation is about control preference, not a tested combat advantage. If your hand naturally maintains a comfortable stick position and you dislike moving one hand between many keyboard keys, a gamepad may reduce friction during ordinary play.
Spend enough time moving, stopping, turning, and repositioning before deciding. A method that feels comfortable while standing in town can feel different when you must move continuously, use abilities, interact with objects, and react to danger. Test the activities you actually perform rather than judging from the first few minutes.
Controller-oriented menus
Controller users should expect menus and inventory actions to be designed around buttons, focus movement, and the controller’s own labels. The 0.2.0h currency example shows that the same bulk action has a different gesture on gamepad: hold Triangle or Y instead of using Ctrl with a mouse click. The exact face-button letter depends on the controller layout presented by your platform.
Label visibility and text size
The 0.1.1 notes recorded a bindable controller action for showing or hiding item and object labels, along with larger text in some controller interface locations. Treat that as evidence of controller-specific UI work, not a guarantee that every screen currently uses those dimensions or that the same options are unavailable elsewhere. Check the current in-game settings and bindings after each major update.
Choose keyboard and mouse when cursor control and key bindings matter most
Cursor-oriented interaction
Keyboard and mouse are a better fit if you prefer pointing directly at enemies, items, interface controls, and inventory slots. The mouse supplies a visible cursor, while the keyboard gives you many physical keys for movement choices, abilities, modifiers, and menu shortcuts. That arrangement can feel more transparent when you want to see exactly what your pointer is targeting.

Cursor Tracking option
In the 0.4.0 Early Access notes, Grinding Gear Games added a Cursor Tracking option for keyboard-and-mouse users. The notes establish the option’s existence; they do not describe a universal best value or claim that it improves performance for every player. Try the available setting, then judge whether cursor behavior feels predictable during combat and inventory work.
Keyboard-and-mouse inventory gestures
The documented bulk-currency action is Ctrl plus right-click. It is a useful example of why a player who spends substantial time sorting or moving items may prefer a mouse-driven interface. Do not assume every controller action has the same shortcut or that every keyboard action has a one-button gamepad equivalent; consult the current binding display for the screen you are using.

| Decision area | Controller | Keyboard and mouse | What is actually established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | Best suited to players who prefer analog-stick, gamepad movement. | Best suited to players who prefer keyboard movement and cursor use. | Preference-based recommendation; the cited notes contain no movement-speed test. |
| Targeting | Uses the controller-oriented targeting and interface behavior available in your build. | Uses a visible cursor and keyboard-and-mouse interaction; 0.4.0 added Cursor Tracking. | No official accuracy or targeting-speed comparison is provided. |
| Bulk currency movement | Hold Triangle or Y, according to the 0.2.0h notes. | Hold Ctrl and right-click, according to the 0.2.0h notes. | Both methods support the task through different controls. |
| Labels and controller UI | 0.1.1 documented a bindable show/hide-label action and larger text in some controller UI areas. | Those changes were specifically described as controller-oriented. | 0.1.1 is historical; later patches may change the interface. |
| Switching behavior | The 0.4.0 notes say WASD selection is remembered when switching at character selection. | The same character-selection qualification applies. | Do not interpret this as proof of seamless switching during combat or every menu. |
| Comfort | May suit players who prefer a gamepad posture and button layout. | May suit players who prefer a desk setup, cursor, and many keys. | Ergonomics are individual and were not tested in the cited notes. |
| Hardware choice | Requires a compatible controller for your platform. | Requires a compatible keyboard and mouse setup. | No specific device model is officially endorsed in the cited material. |
How to compare both methods fairly
A short, controlled trial avoids choosing based on a single awkward menu or a first impression. You do not need a benchmark or a damage spreadsheet; you need the same situations and the same criteria.
- Use one character and one familiar area. Keep the character, equipment, abilities, and activity consistent so the input method is the main variable.
- Record your starting setup. Note whether you selected WASD, which bindings you changed, and which controller layout the game displays. This gives you a reference when switching back.
- Run a movement loop. Travel through the same safe route, stop at the same points, turn around, and interact with several objects. Judge whether movement starts and stops where you expect, not whether one method looks faster in a clip.
- Repeat ordinary combat. Use the same ability sequence against comparable enemies. Pay attention to whether you can select the intended target, reposition without hesitation, and keep track of your character while watching threats.
- Perform inventory work. Pick up several items, move them, and bulk-move currency. On keyboard and mouse, test Ctrl plus right-click; on gamepad, test the Triangle or Y gesture documented in the 0.2.0h notes. If your current build behaves differently, follow its on-screen prompt and record the difference.
- Check labels and text. On a controller, look for the current bindable label action and inspect text in the areas you use most. Do not assume the 0.1.1 presentation is unchanged.
- Try the Cursor Tracking option. If you are using keyboard and mouse, test the available setting in both combat and menus. Keep the value that makes pointer behavior easiest for you to predict.
- Repeat after changing input. Switch methods at the character-selection screen and verify which movement option is remembered. This is the context explicitly described in the 0.4.0 notes.
- Choose the method that produces fewer corrections. Count practical interruptions: missed clicks, accidental menu exits, forgotten button combinations, uncomfortable hand positions, or moments when you stop watching the battlefield to operate the interface. The method requiring less conscious correction is usually the better personal fit.
What switching support does—and does not—promise
The 0.4.0 notes specifically say that the game remembers whether WASD was selected when switching between controller and keyboard at character selection. That is useful if you maintain different movement preferences for different input methods. It is not a statement that the game will automatically preserve every binding, transition seamlessly in the middle of combat, or keep the same focus in every menu.
If you switch often, verify three things after selecting your character: which device is active, whether movement behaves as expected, and whether the menu you opened has the correct focus or cursor. If something feels wrong, return to the relevant binding or input settings instead of assuming that a mid-session switch is supported in every context.

Inventory and menu differences you should practice
Bulk-moving currency
The 0.2.0h notes provide the most concrete side-by-side operation. With keyboard and mouse, use Ctrl plus right-click to bulk-move currency. With a gamepad, hold Triangle or Y. Practice this in a low-pressure inventory screen so the gesture becomes familiar before you need to reorganize items quickly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Labels and object visibility
Controller users may find the documented show/hide-label action useful when the screen contains many item or object labels. Because the action is bindable, locate its current entry in the controller bindings rather than relying on an old button assignment. If the option is absent or named differently in your version, use the current in-game description as the authority.
Mouse focus versus button focus
Keyboard-and-mouse interaction is naturally pointer-led; controller interaction is naturally focus- and button-led. That distinction affects how quickly you reach an inventory slot, confirm a dialog, or move between menu regions. Neither model is inherently superior. The relevant question is whether the focus behavior matches how you expect to navigate.
Comfort, accessibility, and hardware fit
Comfort is personal. A controller may be preferable if a compact button arrangement and analog stick reduce strain for you. Keyboard and mouse may be preferable if you need a stable desk surface, a visible pointer, or access to many keys without cycling through layers. These are possible fits, not medical or ergonomic guarantees.
Use equipment that is compatible with your platform and operating setup. The cited official notes do not test or verify any named adaptive device, controller model, keyboard, mouse, remapping program, or accessibility configuration. If you use adaptive hardware, confirm that it is supported by your platform and that the game recognizes the required inputs before buying it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming one method has higher damage or speed
The official input notes do not publish comparative measurements. A player may personally clear more comfortably with one device, but that experience is not evidence of a universal combat multiplier. Treat claims about guaranteed faster clears, better accuracy, or greater endgame efficiency as unverified unless they include a reproducible test with clearly stated conditions.
Expecting identical commands on both devices
The currency example proves that equivalent tasks can use different gestures. Read the current binding or on-screen prompt for the active input method instead of pressing the command you remember from the other device.
Overgeneralizing the character-selection switching note
Remembered WASD selection is documented for switching at character selection. It does not establish automatic preservation during combat, while opening an inventory, or across every menu. Test those contexts before building a workflow around them.
Treating old controller UI changes as permanent
The label toggle and larger text were recorded in the 0.1.1 notes. They are useful historical context, but a later patch can rename, relocate, or replace a setting. Verify the current interface in your installed version.

Judging from an unsuitable test
Testing only a town menu can make either method appear ideal. Include movement, targeting, combat, inventory, labels, and a return to character selection. The best choice is the one that remains manageable across the full loop you actually play.

A decision checklist
Use the controller when most of these statements describe you:
- You prefer analog-stick movement and a gamepad posture.
- You are comfortable learning controller-specific menu focus and button prompts.
- You would rather hold a button for the documented bulk-currency action than use a mouse modifier.
- The controller’s current label and text options make item visibility comfortable for you.
Use keyboard and mouse when most of these statements describe you:
- You prefer a visible cursor for targeting, inventory, and menu navigation.
- You like assigning actions across many keyboard keys.
- Ctrl plus right-click feels more natural than the controller’s hold-button gesture for bulk currency.
- The Cursor Tracking option produces pointer behavior you can predict.
If the lists are close, alternate input methods by activity only if your switching routine remains reliable. Otherwise, pick one method for a full play session and reassess after you have used it for combat and inventory rather than changing every few minutes.

Final recommendation
There is no evidence in the cited official notes for a universal winner. Pick a controller for gamepad movement and a controller-oriented interface; pick keyboard and mouse for cursor interaction and keyboard bindings. The most defensible choice is the one that lets you move, target, fight, and manage items with the fewest conscious corrections. Use the 0.4.0, 0.2.0h, and 0.1.1 notes as guides to differences in behavior, then verify the exact prompts and settings in your current build.
