Patchstack reports exploitation attempts against CVE-2026-85097, a Bricksforge plugin flaw that can let an unauthenticated attacker upload and execute PHP code on a WordPress server. The CVE record says versions through and including 3.1.8.9 are affected; Patchstack recommends updating to 3.1.8.10 or later. The severity figures differ by source: the CVE record lists CVSS 3.1 at 9.8, while Patchstack labels the issue 10.0.

What is the Bricksforge vulnerability?

CVE-2026-85097 affects Bricksforge, a plugin for WordPress. According to the NVD entry, the flaw involves insufficient validation of an attacker-controlled URL value during a form submission. The described attack can use a valid nonce and a specially crafted upload flow to place a file in a temporary upload location and cause PHP code to execute on the server.

The key security consequence is unauthenticated arbitrary file upload leading to server-side code execution. In practical terms, a successful attack could give an attacker a way to run code in the context of the affected site. This is why administrators should treat an affected installation as urgent to update, rather than as a cosmetic or low-impact plugin issue.

Is CVE-2026-85097 being exploited?

Patchstack says its telemetry detected exploitation attempts beginning October 7, 2026, at 21:47 UTC. That is Patchstack’s reported observation; it does not identify a confirmed victim or establish that any particular WordPress site was compromised. The public reporting therefore supports saying that attempts have been observed, not that every vulnerable site has been attacked.

Administrators should investigate their own environment if Bricksforge was installed in the affected range while the site was exposed. An update removes the known vulnerable version from the installation, but cannot establish whether an earlier intrusion occurred.

Which versions are affected, and which version fixes it?

What should WordPress administrators do?

  1. Inventory Bricksforge installations. In each WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Installed Plugins and check whether Bricksforge is present and which version is installed. Include sites managed through a hosting or deployment workflow if those systems control plugin versions.
  2. Update affected installations. Use the site’s normal, approved update process to install Bricksforge 3.1.8.10 or later, following Patchstack’s recommendation. If a routine update is not available through your deployment process, contact the person or team responsible for maintaining that site.
  3. Verify the result. Recheck the installed version after the update and confirm that the site is no longer running a version through 3.1.8.9.
  4. Assess potentially exposed sites. If an affected version was installed while the site was reachable, review relevant logs and uploaded files through your organization’s incident-response process. Escalate suspicious findings for investigation; an update alone does not prove that no compromise occurred.

Why do sources report both 9.8 and 10.0?

The figures come from different sources, so they should not be presented as if they were the same rating. The CVE.org record lists a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, attributed to the CVE Program / Wordfence, with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. Patchstack’s report, dated October 8, 2026, labels the vulnerability 10.0.
