A new Alaska lake-sediment study finds that catchments with discontinuous, or patchier, permafrost have substantially stronger hillslope erosion than catchments under mostly continuous permafrost. The modeled average hillslope diffusivity was 2.1 to 3.0 times higher in discontinuous-permafrost terrain, leading the authors to warn that continued Arctic warming could more than double hillslope erosion in some landscapes.
What the 12-lake study found
Emrah Özpolat and colleagues reconstructed long-term erosion using sediment cores from 12 Alaska lakes. The lakes were divided into two regional groups: the Toolik cluster, representing mostly continuous permafrost, and the Delta Junction cluster, representing discontinuous permafrost. The cores contain sediment deposited from the middle Holocene to the present, allowing the researchers to compare erosion over thousands of years rather than relying only on short modern records.
The central result is a contrast in hillslope transport. Average hillslope diffusivity—the model parameter describing gradual, soil-mantled movement downslope—was approximately 2.1 to 3.0 times higher in the discontinuous-permafrost group. The authors say a future shift from continuous to discontinuous permafrost, driven by warming, could therefore “double or more the intensity of hillslope erosion.”
| Regional cluster | Permafrost setting | Sediment-based erosion rate, geometric volume | Sediment-based erosion rate, probing volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toolik | Mostly continuous permafrost | 1.48 ± 1.16 g m−2 yr−1 | 1.28 ± 0.92 g m−2 yr−1 |
| Delta Junction | Discontinuous permafrost | 29.2 ± 21.9 g m−2 yr−1 | 22.6 ± 16.7 g m−2 yr−1 |
The rates are catchment averages inferred from lake sediments, not a measurement of soil loss at every point on a slope. The two volume methods provide different estimates of the same sediment records, and their uncertainties are large.

How the researchers separated hillslope and river transport
Özpolat’s team constrained a diffusion–advection Landscape Evolution Model with the lake-core data. In this framework, diffusive transport represents the many small movements that gradually redistribute soil and debris down hillslopes. Creep, frost-driven soil motion and solifluction are examples. Advective transport represents more directed movement through channels, such as sediment carried by streams.
The fitted comparison identified hillslope diffusivity as the statistically significant process parameter. Fluvial erodibility—the parameter associated with channel-driven removal—was not statistically significant in the comparison. That does not mean streams are irrelevant. It means the contrast between the two regional groups was explained more convincingly by differences in hillslope transport than by the fitted channel-erodibility term.

Why discontinuous permafrost can make slopes more mobile
Continuous permafrost occupies more than 90% of a landscape, while discontinuous permafrost covers roughly 50% to 90%, leaving unfrozen or seasonally thawed ground interspersed with frozen areas. That patchiness changes how water, heat and soil move through a hillslope.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Thicker active layers: The seasonally thawed layer above permafrost can deepen, giving a larger volume of soil that can deform or wash downslope.
- More freeze–thaw cycling: Repeated freezing and thawing disrupts soil structure and can loosen particles.
- Longer thaw seasons: A longer period without frozen ground allows creep and runoff-driven movement to continue for more of the year.
- Wetter summers: Water increases pore pressure and can reduce the strength of thawed soils.
- Wildfire disturbance: Fire can remove insulating vegetation and organic layers, changing ground temperatures and exposing mineral soil.
- Tree throw: Trees uprooted by wind or thaw disturb the soil and create local pathways for sediment movement.
These processes do not operate identically at every site. Their combination helps explain why the discontinuous-permafrost catchments in the study had higher modeled hillslope diffusivity, but it is not a universal recipe for a fixed erosion increase.

What “2.1 to 3.0 times higher” does—and does not—mean
The factor applies to the study’s average modeled hillslope diffusivity when the discontinuous-permafrost and continuous-permafrost regional groups were compared. It should not be read as a constant multiplier for every Alaska watershed or for the entire Arctic. The analysis covered two regions and small catchments, and the diffusivity estimates have overlapping uncertainty.
The authors also identify several reasons to interpret the result cautiously:

- Individual data points can strongly influence a three-parameter model.
- Shoreline wave action and thaw slumping may contribute to the sediment captured in lake basins.
- Lake-sediment records provide multi-thousand-year averages, not a direct forecast of next year’s erosion.
- Broader observations are needed to test whether the same relationship holds across different terrain, vegetation and hydrologic settings.
How warming could shift the erosion regime
Arctic warming can deepen seasonal thaw, reduce the duration of frozen ground and create more discontinuous permafrost conditions within areas that were previously more continuously frozen. As frozen ground becomes less connected, slopes may retain less of the mechanical support and hydrologic control provided by permafrost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe study’s conclusion is conditional: if a warming landscape undergoes a transition from continuous to discontinuous permafrost, hillslope erosion could increase substantially. The result is not a claim that every thawing slope will immediately experience a twofold increase, nor that channel erosion will rise by the same amount.

Evidence from other Alaska landscapes
A separate study on the Seward Peninsula documented creep, solifluction, gullying and shallow failures in discontinuous permafrost. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) showed that ground displacement accelerated in late summer during periods of intense rainfall and/or deep thaw.
That observation comes from a different dataset and should not be combined numerically with the 12-lake analysis. It does, however, illustrate why permafrost terrain cannot be described by a single erosion mechanism: slow soil movement, concentrated gullying and shallow slope failures can all occur in the same broader environment.
Why the result matters beyond sediment totals
More hillslope erosion can deliver additional mineral sediment and organic material to lakes and streams. That may alter water clarity, nutrient availability and habitat conditions, while changing how carbon is stored or exported from thawing catchments. Infrastructure, roads and field installations on thaw-sensitive slopes may also face greater maintenance challenges where ground movement accelerates.

Those data can reveal whether a long-term sediment signal is being driven by gradual hillslope transport, episodic failures, channel activity or a mixture of processes.
The practical takeaway
Patchier permafrost is associated with stronger hillslope erosion in the Alaska catchments studied by Özpolat and colleagues. The evidence supports a mechanism in which thaw-sensitive, discontinuous ground increases gradual downslope transport, while the size of the effect remains site-specific. The 2.1-to-3.0-fold diffusivity difference is an important warning about possible warming impacts, but it is a regional result that needs testing across more watersheds before it can be treated as a general Arctic rule.
