There is no evidence-based “best 12” ranking or comparable current pricing for a dozen passwordless products. The practical choice depends first on whether you are securing employee access, customer accounts, or an application you are building—and then on the authentication method, integrations, recovery controls, and total cost. This guide compares the options for which the available sources support useful distinctions, and identifies where they do not establish enough detail to recommend a winner.
What passwordless authentication includes
Passwordless is an umbrella for different sign-in methods and deployment patterns, not a single interchangeable feature. It can include passkeys, FIDO2 security keys, Windows Hello, and other flows. How sign-in works also depends on the device and operating system: a managed Windows device may combine device sign-in with app single sign-on, while macOS and mobile deployments can rely more on platform authentication, passkeys, app sign-in, or a broker. Microsoft’s passwordless guidance describes these distinctions and separates Entra ID’s identity role from Intune’s device configuration and policy role.
Passwordless does not automatically mean phishing-resistant. Hardware-backed asymmetric credentials such as passkeys and FIDO2 keys can resist credential interception and replay, but a deployment may still expose users to social engineering, misleading prompts, or MFA fatigue depending on its methods and policies. Evaluate the specific credential and configured sign-in flow, not just the product’s “passwordless” label. Microsoft’s guidance explains this distinction.

- Workforce identity: employee sign-in, access to business applications, device policy, and federation with existing identity systems.
- Customer identity: registration and sign-in for customers, including account management and recovery journeys.
- Developer authentication: APIs, SDKs, and embedded sign-in for an application or service.
- Physical authenticator: a FIDO2 security key used as a hardware-backed credential, often in combination with an identity platform.
These categories are not interchangeable. A customer identity feature set does not establish that the same vendor’s workforce product has the same capabilities, and a security key is an authenticator rather than a complete identity-management platform.

Options with specific documented details
Microsoft Entra ID with Intune: workforce identity and managed devices
Microsoft describes Entra ID as the identity and single sign-on layer and Intune as the layer for device readiness, configuration, compliance, and app deployment. Its guidance covers Windows Hello, FIDO2 keys, passkeys, Conditional Access, and platform requirements. It identifies Entra ID P1 for several capabilities, including FIDO2 keys, passkeys, and Conditional Access enforcement; Entra ID P2 for risk-based Conditional Access; and Intune Plan 1 for device compliance and configuration profiles. Check the current licensing and operating-system requirements for your deployment because Microsoft notes that platform requirements can change. Microsoft Learn: passwordless authentication with Intune.
This is the most directly documented fit here for an organization aligning passwordless sign-in with managed-device policy. It also means the design spans identity and device-management components, so assess the applicable licenses and supported platforms together rather than treating the sign-in method as a standalone purchase.

Cisco Duo Passwordless: adding passwordless to federated applications
Duo documents Passwordless for SAML and OIDC applications and describes an arrangement for organizations that already use an external SAML identity provider, including Entra ID, Okta, or PingFederate. In the documented external-IdP setup, applications already federated to that provider do not necessarily need to be reconfigured to point to Duo SSO. Duo also documents roaming authenticators, including passkeys/WebAuthn and FIDO2 security keys. Confirm the prerequisites, policy settings, and availability for the intended Duo plan. Cisco Duo Passwordless documentation.
This option merits consideration when preserving an existing federation arrangement matters. The documentation supports a possible integration path, not a claim that every organization can add Duo without application or identity-provider changes.

Ping Identity: customer passwordless identity
Ping’s pricing and features page describes PingOne for Customers Passwordless as combining SSO, user management, MFA, and risk management. It lists prebuilt passwordless flows, gradual migration journeys, real-time threat detection, and customer profile management. The page says to contact sales for Passwordless pricing and advertises a 30-day trial. A separate Plus package is listed as starting at $50,000 annually and includes adaptive MFA; that is not a universal price for PingOne for Customers Passwordless. Ping Identity pricing and features.
Ping is therefore a customer-identity candidate when migration journeys and broader customer profile functions are in scope. Request a quote for the relevant product and package rather than using the separate Plus figure as its price.

Okta: customer identity passkeys
Okta’s September 2025 customer identity datasheet describes passkeys based on WebAuthn/FIDO2, including cross-device use such as registering a passkey on a phone and signing in on a laptop. The datasheet reports a four-times higher login success rate and two-times faster login times compared with passwords, citing a Google source. These are vendor-reproduced claims, not independently verified here; they should not be treated as guaranteed results for a different product, user group, or deployment. The datasheet describes customer identity and does not establish identical details for every Okta product or plan. Okta customer identity passkeys datasheet, September 2025.
Other names to investigate—not a ranked top twelve
A 2026 vendor landscape overview names Auth0, HYPR, Stytch, Yubico, 1Kosmos, WorkOS, and SenseCrypt alongside Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, and Ping Identity. Cisco Duo is another candidate with separate documentation described above. The overview groups candidates across enterprise identity clouds, developer platforms, hardware keys, and biometric identity; it does not establish a neutral ranking or enough comparable product and pricing detail to declare these the best twelve. WorkOS’s vendor-authored comparison discusses WorkOS, Cisco Duo, Okta Adaptive MFA, Microsoft Entra ID, and Ping Identity. It lists FIDO2/passkey support across those five and highlights differences in APIs, SDKs, and enterprise SSO. Use it as a starting point for questions, not an independent evaluation: it is written by a vendor and does not establish a neutral winner. WorkOS’s comparison of MFA providers.
For physical keys, Duo’s documentation names Yubico and Feitian as examples of FIDO2-compliant WebAuthn roaming authenticators. That supports considering the product category, not a recommendation of a particular model. Verify compatibility with the organization’s devices, browsers, identity platform, and policy before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare products before choosing
- Define the buyer and identity scope. Establish whether the project covers employees, customers, or authentication embedded in an application. This determines which product category and user-management functions matter.
- Identify the actual sign-in methods. Ask whether the proposed flow uses passkeys, device-bound credentials, roaming security keys, push, OTP, or fallback methods. Determine which methods are phishing-resistant and whether policy can require them for the relevant users and applications.
- Check platform coverage. Confirm supported browsers and operating systems, managed versus unmanaged device behavior, and whether cross-device sign-in is supported for the use case. Do not infer broad compatibility from support for one passkey flow.
- Map integrations and administration. Verify SAML/OIDC federation, APIs and SDKs where relevant, directories, provisioning, device policies, and compatibility with the existing identity provider. Ask whether existing application configurations must change.
- Design enrollment, recovery, and resilience. Document how users enroll, migrate gradually, replace a lost device, recover an account, and use fallback controls. Recovery is part of the security design: a strong primary credential can be undermined by a weaker recovery route.
- Calculate total cost on the same basis. Compare the applicable license tier, seat or active-user measure, transaction or usage charges, add-ons, minimum commitments, implementation, and ongoing administration. Do not compare annual package pricing with per-user monthly pricing unless scope, currency, and billing basis are normalized.
What the available pricing evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Only Ping’s cited pricing page provides a specific distinction useful here: PingOne for Customers Passwordless is contact-sales priced, while a separate Plus package starts at $50,000 annually. The cited Microsoft, Duo, and Okta materials do not provide comparable current prices for the products and capabilities discussed above. The other named candidates are not accompanied here by verified, comparable prices. A twelve-vendor price table would therefore imply a level of consistency that the evidence does not support.
Ask each vendor for a quote tied to the same scenario: user population, authentication methods, deployment region, required integrations, support level, and expected usage. Include migration and recovery operations in the comparison, not only the license line item.
Why this is a fit-based comparison, not a “best 12” ranking
The cited material supports several useful product distinctions and a broader map of candidates, but it does not verify a neutral ranking of twelve solutions or a consistent feature-and-price matrix across twelve providers. Vendor-authored comparisons and landscape roundups can identify products to evaluate; they are not proof that one is universally best. Choose a shortlist by identity scope and required controls, then validate the exact plan, platform support, recovery process, and cost with the vendor documentation and quote.
