You can send password-reset emails through an HTTPS API without configuring SMTP, but the sender is only one part of a secure recovery flow. Prevent account enumeration, use a random single-use token that expires, build links from a trusted application domain, and treat provider acceptance as a send attempt—not proof of inbox delivery. For Amazon SES’s à-la-carte outbound mode, AWS listed a rate of $0.10 per 1,000 emails when its pricing page was accessed on October 7, 2026; the final bill depends on the selected pricing model and any additional services.

What makes an API-only password-reset flow secure?

A password-reset request is an authentication operation. The email carries a temporary capability to change an account’s password, so the application must protect the request, token, link, and completion step—not just send a message.

Keep account existence private

Return the same outward message whether the submitted address belongs to an account or not. OWASP’s Forgot Password Cheat Sheet says: “Return a consistent message for both existent and non-existent accounts.” Keep response timing reasonably consistent as well, and limit repeated requests. One practical design is to enqueue the work so an account lookup does not create an obvious fast response for unknown addresses. Apply controls such as per-account rate limits or other protections against automated submissions.

Make the token hard to guess and safe to use

Generate reset tokens with a cryptographically secure random generator. Associate each token with one account, store it securely, make it single-use, and enforce an expiration time. Choose the expiration in the implementation and ensure the server actually enforces it; the email should state only the duration the application uses.

Opening the URL must not change the account. Validate the submitted token before allowing a password change, and rate-limit token guesses. Use the same password policy and storage practices as for an ordinary password change. OWASP describes URL tokens as the simplest and fastest implementation path, but the token still needs these protections.

Protect the reset URL and the recipient

Construct links from a fixed or allow-listed application origin, not from an untrusted inbound Host header, and serve the reset page over HTTPS. Set Referrer-Policy: no-referrer on that page to reduce the chance that the token is sent to third parties through referrer information. After a successful reset, notify the user that the password changed. Never email the password itself.

How can you send email through an API instead of SMTP?

An API-only path means the application makes an authenticated HTTPS request to the email provider rather than connecting to an SMTP server. It avoids setting up an SMTP client and SMTP credentials, but still requires server-side credentials, sender configuration, and operational handling of failures.

Amazon SES

AWS documents three SES sending methods: the console, SMTP interface, and API. Its email-sending setup guide describes raw HTTP requests as an API route, so an application can use an AWS SDK or HTTPS API request without configuring SMTP. Keep credentials on the server, not in browser code. Use IAM permissions limited to the sending action and approved sender identity; AWS explains these controls in its SES identity and access management documentation, including restrictions on sending actions and permitted sender or recipient addresses.

Postmark

Postmark documents an HTTPS Email API using the X-Postmark-Server-Token request header. Its Email API documentation includes a “Password Reset” subject example. The sender address must have a registered and confirmed Sender Signature. Keep the server token out of client-side code.

What should the application record and handle?

A successful API response indicates that the provider accepted a request; it does not establish that the message reached the recipient’s inbox. Postmark’s documented response includes a MessageID. Retain provider message identifiers alongside an internal reset-request correlation ID so support staff can investigate a send attempt. Avoid logging raw reset tokens: the identifier is useful for troubleshooting, while the token itself grants reset capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle request failures explicitly. If the provider rejects a send or the API call fails, record the failure against the internal request, apply a controlled retry or recovery policy, and avoid exposing account existence through a different user-facing response. A provider’s API documentation does not establish comparative inbox placement, so choose based on integration, controls, pricing, and operational fit rather than an unsupported deliverability ranking.

How much does API-based reset email cost?

AWS’s pricing page listed à-la-carte outbound email at $0.10 per 1,000 emails and attachment data at $0.12 per GB sent when accessed on October 7, 2026. AWS describes à-la-carte usage as having no minimum fees or mandatory service usage. These are AWS-listed rates for that pricing mode, not a guaranteed total bill; AWS also offers Essentials, Pro, and Enterprise plans with separate rates and monthly account or region fees for some plans. See the Amazon SES pricing page for current terms before deployment.

Estimate plain-message sending charges

For an à-la-carte estimate with no attachments, use:

number of emails / 1,000 × $0.10

For example, 10,000 outbound messages at the listed à-la-carte rate would yield a direct sending charge of $1 before any other applicable charges. The $0.12-per-GB attachment rate matters only if messages include attachments; password-reset emails generally have no need for them.

Bound the estimate, not the bill

  • State the pricing model whenever quoting a rate; do not mix à-la-carte figures with plan pricing.
  • Account for the selected plan and any validation, dedicated-IP, deliverability, data-transfer, or other services you enable.
  • Recheck the AWS pricing page because rates and plan details can change.
  • Use realistic request volumes and abuse limits when forecasting: an attack or malfunction can increase send volume even when normal recovery traffic is small.

The formula estimates direct outbound sending at the listed rate; it is not a total-cost guarantee. Other AWS services or optional features can add charges.
