To debug a password reset email, follow the flow from request submission to token validation: confirm the app accepts and queues the request, matches the intended account, renders the right message, and creates a secure link the reset page can validate. If the email arrives but its link fails, delivery is not the problem; if the email never arrives, a working reset token alone will not fix it.
1. Check whether the reset request is accepted and queued
When a user reports “password reset email not received” or “password reset request says email not found,” first determine what the application did with the request. Check the endpoint response, application logs, queue status, and any mail-provider message identifier. This separates a rejected or unqueued request from a message that was handed off but did not reach the inbox.
Do not reveal whether an address belongs to an account. OWASP recommends returning a consistent message for existing and nonexistent accounts and keeping response timing consistent to reduce account enumeration. Apply abuse controls to repeated submissions, such as per-account rate limits or CAPTCHA, so automated requests cannot flood an inbox. See the OWASP Forgot Password Cheat Sheet.

2. Check address matching and sending-domain authentication
If the endpoint accepts the request but no expected message appears, verify which stored account the submitted address matched. Email comparison needs an explicit policy: the domain portion is case-insensitive, while the local part before the @ is technically case-sensitive under SMTP, even though many providers do not enforce that distinction. Preserve the original address and apply the same comparison rules in registration, login, recovery, and account linking. Casual local-part normalization can collapse distinct addresses into one account. OWASP explains these distinctions in its Email Validation and Verification Cheat Sheet.
For the sending domain, inspect SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records and their alignment when diagnosing spoofing protection or delivery problems. These records can support authentication of mail claiming to come from your domain, but their presence does not prove inbox placement. The OWASP Web Security Testing Guide discusses these checks in the context of reset functionality.

3. Inspect the rendered template and sending setup
If a user says “password reset email has wrong link,” inspect the actual rendered message rather than only the template source. Check the recipient, sender identity, text and HTML bodies, reset URL, and environment-specific base URL. Make sure any button and plain-text link lead to the same intended route, and that template customization has not removed or altered the token.
A controlled test can isolate this stage: request a reset for a test account, capture the resulting email in a test inbox, and compare the rendered link with the route and host the application expects. Check provider events as well as the message itself. An email captured in a test environment demonstrates that the flow can produce a message there; it does not establish production inbox delivery.

Configuration is platform-specific. For example, Payload CMS documents customizable authentication email templates and a minRequestInterval setting that controls the minimum time between reset emails for the same user. Other frameworks and applications use different APIs and settings; do not assume this option exists outside Payload.
End-to-end testing can also exercise the full sequence: trigger a reset, poll for the message, extract its link, and complete the reset. SMTP Labs describes this testing technique; it is a way to validate a workflow, not a guarantee of production delivery by any mail provider.

4. Validate the reset-link payload and token lifecycle
If the email arrives but the “password reset link not working,” treat the link as a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to use it. Inspect the URL host, HTTPS, token presence, account association, expiry, and the server’s validation result. Confirm the password changes only after a valid token is presented.
- Generate tokens with a cryptographically secure random source and sufficient length.
- Bind each token to the intended account, store it securely, and invalidate it after successful use.
- Set an expiry appropriate to the application and rate-limit token attempts.
- Build reset URLs from a configured trusted origin or validated allowlist, not an untrusted incoming Host header. OWASP warns: “Don’t rely on the Host header while creating the reset URLs to avoid Host Header Injection attacks.”
- Require HTTPS, set a no-referrer policy on the reset page, and avoid third-party resources there that could receive the token through a Referer header.
The OWASP testing guide calls for reset links to be single use and time limited. Its discussion says the appropriate lifetime depends on the site and should rarely exceed an hour; that is testing guidance, not a universal regulatory deadline. See the OWASP reset-functionality testing guide and the Forgot Password Cheat Sheet.

When a link is unexpectedly invalid, consider whether a mail security scanner or proxy followed it before the user did. Check server logs and token state to see whether the token was consumed or expired; do not assume the scanner caused the failure without evidence. A single-use design is important, but the message and validation flow must also account for how links are inspected in the deployment environment.
Choose the next check from the evidence
| Observed symptom | First evidence to inspect |
|---|---|
| No email appears | Request response and logs, queue/provider status, matched recipient, and sending-domain authentication. |
| Email arrives but the link fails | Rendered URL and host, HTTPS, token presence and account binding, expiry, single-use state, and validation result. |
| Email arrives with a mismatched or unexpected destination | Rendered text and HTML links, template token handling, configured base URL, and trusted-host construction. |
| Requests appear to target the wrong account | Stored address, domain/local-part comparison policy, and consistency of that policy across account flows. |
These checks narrow the fault to a stage; they do not identify the cause of a particular deployment’s incident without its logs and configuration.
