There is no universally safest browser extension among 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, and Proton Pass. The practical choice depends on how much control you want over autofill, which sites the extension can match, what your browser permits, how the vault is protected, and whether your browser and passkey setup are supported. The security descriptions below come from each provider; they are not an independent comparative test.

What a password-manager extension can see

A browser extension has to interact with login pages to identify username and password fields, offer a matching item, and insert data. Bitwarden’s technical architecture describes content scripts that inspect page forms and modify them for autofill. Those scripts communicate with background components and the extension interface. This page access explains why a password manager requests permissions beyond those needed to display a standalone vault; it does not, by itself, show that a permission is excessive or that the extension has misused it.

1Password’s permission documentation similarly lists website-data access for opening URLs and filling or saving details. Its Chrome, Brave, and Edge permissions also include notifications, downloads, connection to native applications, and changing browser privacy settings so 1Password can be the default manager or suppress competing browser autofill prompts. Permission names and scope vary by browser, so read the installation prompt for the specific browser and edition you use.

Install extensions from the browser’s official store, keep the browser and extension updated, and review the store’s displayed permissions after updates. A capability is not evidence of misuse, but it is a useful part of your privacy decision.

Autofill safety: matching rules matter

1Password’s selection-and-fill model

1Password says vault data remains encrypted and that a website cannot directly access vault information without interaction with the extension’s autofill element. Its own warning is more nuanced: a malicious or compromised page could trick you into filling one matching item after you select it. The page would not receive the entire vault, but the selected credential could still be disclosed to the wrong destination. 1Password recommends locking the extension on unfamiliar or risky sites so filling requires explicit intent. This is the provider’s explanation of its implementation, not independent evidence that it is safer than another extension.

Bitwarden’s URI matching and controls

Bitwarden requires each login item to have an assigned website URI. Its documented default match type is the base domain, although an organization can change that setting. You can add blocked domains to prevent an item from being offered on specified sites. Bitwarden also documents several interaction paths: a menu opened by the user, inline suggestions in fields, a context-menu command, keyboard shortcuts, and faster methods available while the vault is unlocked.

Bitwarden warns when an untrusted iframe is involved or when an HTTP page conflicts with a saved HTTPS URI. Treat those warnings as a reason to stop and verify the address, not as an inconvenience to dismiss. A saved URI that is too broad can make a credential appear on more pages than you intend; a URI that is too narrow can leave you without an expected suggestion.

Automatic filling versus deliberate filling

Page-load autofill can be convenient, but it gives the extension an opportunity to act before you have inspected the page. User-selected filling adds a confirmation step and makes the destination visible in your decision. Neither mode is risk-free: a convincing phishing page can still look legitimate, and a user can select the wrong item. For sensitive accounts, prefer a workflow that requires you to open the extension or choose the credential, especially after an unexpected login prompt.

  • Open the address bar and check the exact domain before filling.
  • Inspect the saved website URI and narrow it when the service has separate login domains.
  • Use blocked-domain settings for look-alike, staging, or untrusted domains where your manager supports them.
  • Do not fill after a page unexpectedly requests credentials, redirects repeatedly, or displays an iframe warning.
  • Lock the extension when you are finished on an unfamiliar computer or site.

Permissions and privacy inside the browser

Provider Documented browser access or capability Local-data and privacy detail What to check
1Password Website data for opening URLs and filling or saving; notifications; downloads; native-app connection; browser privacy changes in Chrome, Brave, and Edge. The extension runs in a sandboxed background page separate from page scripts. Its Secret Key is stored in local storage. Cached passkey identifiers may reveal which sites have passkeys to someone who can read that local browser data. Confirm that the requested permissions fit your browser, and consider who else can read the browser profile on a shared device.
Bitwarden Content scripts inspect forms and insert vault data; extension messages connect page scripts, background components, and the user interface. The nativeMessaging permission can connect the extension to the desktop app for browser biometric unlock. The architecture explains page interaction but does not establish that any permission is unsafe. Decide whether desktop-app biometric unlock is worth native-app communication on your device.
Proton Pass The reviewed documentation describes field-selected filling, manual copying, autosave, and item generation; it does not provide a directly comparable permission inventory in the cited material. Use the permission list shown by your browser during installation and after updates. Compare the actual prompt with the pages you expect to fill, rather than assuming another provider’s permission model.
Dashlane The reviewed browser help focuses on autofill and generation and does not give an equivalent permission table in the cited material. Review browser-store permissions and device authentication settings during setup. Check platform caveats before relying on the extension for every device.

1Password also says its extension assumes that you trust the browser and other installed extensions. That qualification is important: a password manager cannot fully protect secrets from a compromised browser profile or a malicious extension that can read page content. Use a separate browser profile for high-value work when practical, remove extensions you no longer need, and protect the operating-system account.

Vault protection, local storage, and account access

Encryption labels describe different layers of a system. Ask whether a statement concerns data stored on the provider’s servers, the unlocked extension session, local browser storage, or the account sign-in process. The providers’ descriptions below are not standardized independent test results.

Provider Provider-described protection Account access and recovery implications
1Password Describes a WebExtensions sandbox and encrypted vault data. It warns that users must trust their browser and other extensions. A quotation reproduced by 1Password and attributed to AppSec Consulting’s “Penetration Test and Code Review Report” says: “Overall, [1Password] was found to be unusually robust with exceptional error handling, careful data processing, and data encryption that was well considered and thoughtfully implemented.” This is a statement about that report, not a four-provider comparison. The Secret Key is stored in local storage. Cached passkey identifiers can disclose which sites have passkeys to someone with access to browser local data.
Bitwarden Its security FAQ says that if the service were hacked and data exposed, vault information would remain protected by encryption and one-way salted hashing. The extension’s nativeMessaging permission can connect to the desktop app for browser biometric unlock. Decide whether that convenience fits your local threat model.
Proton Pass Proton says each Pass vault uses AES-256 symmetric-key encryption and that end-to-end encryption occurs on your device before storage on its servers. An optional extra password can be required in addition to the Proton Account password for Pass items. Losing account credentials or the extra password can affect access, so record recovery information securely.
Dashlane The reviewed help describes device and browser authentication rather than a directly comparable vault-encryption specification. Depending on setup, sign-in can require an email code plus a Master Password, account PIN, or security key. Dashlane says there is no traditional password reset for a Master Password account and that it does not know that password; recovery planning is therefore essential.

These claims answer different questions. Server-side encryption does not tell you how long an unlocked extension remains available, and a strong account factor does not eliminate phishing risk. Before migrating, identify which credentials or recovery codes you would need if the browser profile, phone, or primary account became unavailable.

Daily workflows, generation, and passkeys

Provider Documented extension workflow Passkey notes
Bitwarden Offers URI-linked suggestions, inline filling, context-menu filling, keyboard shortcuts, page-load options, and manual selection. Faster methods are available while the vault is unlocked. During a site’s passkey login flow, you can select a related saved passkey in the extension.
Proton Pass Supports manual copying and field-selected autofill, autosave, generated passwords, aliases, cards, notes, identities, and other item types. Use the field-selected flow when automatic suggestions do not appear; availability depends on the site and browser.
Dashlane Its extension provides autofill plus password and passphrase generation in the popup. The cited browser help documents security-key sign-in as an account option; that is separate from storing or filling a site passkey.
1Password Provides login suggestions through its extension and can be set as the default manager in browsers that expose the relevant privacy controls. Passkey identifiers may be cached in local browser data, so someone who can read that data could infer which sites have passkeys.

When choosing a workflow, consider how often you create accounts, whether you want aliases and identity fields as well as passwords, and whether you prefer a visible selection step. A generated password is only useful if it is saved to the correct item and the site accepts it; verify the account was created before closing the tab.

Browser and platform compatibility

Provider Browsers listed in the reviewed documentation Important qualifications
Dashlane Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. The help page, updated October 12, 2026, notes availability differences on Linux and Chromebook and says Dashlane may not work in China. Verify the current caveats for your operating system and region.
Proton Pass Firefox, Safari, and Chrome extensions. Proton also notes compatibility with some browsers derived from Firefox or Chromium; derivative-browser support is not automatically identical to support for the upstream browser.
Bitwarden The cited material documents extension autofill and passkey workflows but does not provide a single browser matrix in the reviewed evidence. Check the current extension listing and passkey requirements for each browser you use.
1Password The cited permission table covers Chrome, Brave, and Edge and notes that permissions vary by browser. Confirm the exact store listing for Safari, Firefox, or another browser before switching from a built-in manager.

If you use several devices, evaluate the least-supported one first. A manager that works well in Chrome on a desktop may have different autofill controls, passkey behavior, or permission prompts in Safari on a phone.

A practical selection checklist

  1. List your browsers and operating systems. Include work and personal devices, Linux or Chromebook systems, and any regional restrictions. Eliminate options that do not support the browser where you need daily autofill.
  2. Choose your confirmation style. If you want explicit intent, favor field-selected or menu-based filling and keep automatic page-load behavior off where the extension permits it. If speed matters most, understand exactly when suggestions can appear.
  3. Audit site matching. Open several existing login items, inspect their saved URIs, and narrow broad base-domain matches. Add blocked domains for environments where credentials should never be offered.
  4. Read the installation permissions. Compare the browser’s exact wording with the provider’s explanation. Pay special attention to website-data access, native-app connection, downloads, notifications, and privacy-setting changes.
  5. Map protection to your threat model. Consider encrypted vault storage, the behavior of an unlocked extension, local browser data, and whether another extension or a shared profile could read pages.
  6. Plan account recovery. Store emergency information safely, understand whether a Master Password can be reset, and decide whether an extra Pass password, biometric unlock, email code, PIN, or security key is practical.
  7. Test passkeys on a low-risk account. Confirm that the browser can create, store, and select a passkey before depending on the workflow for an important service. A FIDO2 security key is an optional additional sign-in factor only after the service, browser, and account setup are confirmed compatible.

Common problems and safer fixes

The wrong credential is suggested

Inspect the item’s URI and the page’s complete domain, including subdomains and the protocol. Narrow the match or add a blocked domain, then retry from the site’s genuine login page.

An HTTP or iframe warning appears

Stop filling. Navigate to the service’s HTTPS address manually, remove unexpected frames, and verify that the login page belongs to the service. If the warning persists, contact the service rather than overriding it reflexively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Autofill does not appear

Open the extension and choose the item manually, use its context-menu or keyboard shortcut if available, and check that the vault is unlocked. Some sites build fields dynamically or intentionally block automatic filling, so manual copying may be the only documented fallback.

  • Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.

A passkey is missing

Confirm that the passkey was saved to the intended item, that the browser supports the site’s passkey flow, and that you are using the same profile where the passkey identifier is available. A password manager’s support for passkeys does not guarantee support from every website or browser combination.

You lose access to a Master Password account

Do not assume a conventional reset exists. Dashlane specifically says it does not know a Master Password and does not offer a traditional reset for that account type. Follow the recovery method you configured, such as an account PIN, security key, or other supported factor, and keep recovery material offline and protected.

Bottom line

Compare extensions by control rather than by a single “safest” label. Verify browser support first, then choose the autofill interaction you can use deliberately, inspect URI matching, read permissions, understand what is stored locally, and confirm account-recovery and passkey options. The providers’ security statements are useful for understanding design choices, but they do not constitute an equivalent independent ranking.
