Neither a passphrase nor a random password is automatically safer. The stronger choice is the secret that is long, hard to predict, unique to one account, and protected from exposure. If you must remember and type it yourself, use a long, unpredictable passphrase. If a password manager can generate and fill credentials, use a different randomly generated password for every account.
This distinction matters because “passphrase” describes a format and “random password” describes how a secret is selected. A familiar sentence can be a weak passphrase, while a truly random string can be very strong but inconvenient to memorize. The practical answer depends on who—or what—has to remember the secret.
The short answer: choose by how the password will be used
Use a memorable passphrase for the small number of accounts whose passwords you genuinely need to recall, such as a primary password-manager account or a device login. Make it long, uncommon, and unrelated to your identity. For other accounts, let a password manager create and store a unique random password, so memorability no longer limits the password’s strength.

Length and unpredictability matter more than a label such as “passphrase” or “complex password.” Current NIST guidance treats length as a primary factor in password strength and identifies multiword passphrases as one way to create a longer secret. Predictable words, quotations, personal facts, or a phrase seen in a password list can still be guessed.
What actually makes a password strong?
Length gives an attacker more possibilities to search
A longer secret generally takes more guesses to discover than a shorter one, provided the additional characters are not predictable. This is why a multiword passphrase can be useful: it gives a person a way to create a long password without having to memorize an arbitrary sequence.
Length is not a magic shield. Adding a familiar word, a birth year, or a punctuation mark to a common password may produce a longer string that remains easy to predict. A phrase copied from a song, book, film, prayer, or popular quotation may appear long but can be included in an attacker’s wordlists.
Unpredictability prevents educated guesses
Attackers do not begin with every possible character combination. They try likely choices first: names, addresses, sports teams, seasons, keyboard patterns, common substitutions, and passwords exposed in earlier breaches. A passphrase built from personal information or a well-known saying therefore has less protection than its character count suggests.
A password manager’s generator can select characters or words using a random process rather than your habits. That removes the human tendency to choose related words, familiar patterns, or a predictable suffix. If you create a passphrase yourself, choose unrelated words and avoid details that someone could learn from your social profiles or public records.

Uniqueness stops one breach becoming many
Even a very strong password becomes a liability when it is reused. If one service is breached or phished, criminals can try the same email-and-password pair elsewhere. NIST recommends distinct passwords for this reason. Uniqueness is an account-by-account property: a strong passphrase used on five sites is still one reused credential, not five strong credentials.
Passphrase and random-password options compared
| Choice | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long, unpredictable passphrase | You must remember and manually enter the secret | Can be long and easier to recall than arbitrary characters; works when no manager is available | Familiar quotations, personal details, and predictable word choices may be guessed; it must still be unique |
| Randomly generated password stored by a manager | A password manager can save and fill the credential | Distinct credentials can be generated for every account without memorizing each one | You must protect and recover access to the manager; some sites or workflows may restrict autofill or pasted input |
| Random string memorized without a manager | A limited case where one person can reliably retain and enter an arbitrary string | Can be highly unpredictable if generated properly | Recall and typing become harder as the number of accounts grows, and infrequently used passwords are easy to forget |
There is no current, directly comparable numerical study in the cited material that proves one category is universally easier to remember or safer. The useful decision axes are length, unpredictability, reuse, storage, and how often you must recall the secret—not whether it contains spaces or is called a passphrase.

When a passphrase is the better choice
Use one for secrets you must recall
A passphrase is practical when you cannot depend on autofill: unlocking a password manager, signing in on a new device before the manager is installed, accessing a recovery account, or entering a credential on hardware that does not support your normal tools. The goal is not to make a clever sentence. The goal is a long combination of words that you can remember but an attacker is unlikely to predict.
NIST’s consumer guidance illustrates the idea with the 18-character phrase “cassette lava baby.” It is an example of a memorable, random-enough construction, not a password to copy. Any phrase published in guidance, an article, or a password list should be treated as public.
Build a passphrase without making it predictable
- Start with unrelated words. Select words that do not form a familiar quotation, title, lyric, slogan, or sentence. A random word-selection method is preferable to choosing words that describe your life.
- Make it long enough for the service. More words usually provide more room for unpredictability. Do not shorten the phrase merely to satisfy an outdated character-mix rule.
- Keep the spelling and separators usable. Spaces are appropriate when the site accepts them. If spaces are rejected, use a separator that you can reproduce consistently, but do not rely on a decorative pattern as the source of strength.
- Remove personal clues. Do not use your name, relatives, pets, employer, address, birthday, favorite team, or other information an acquaintance or public profile could reveal.
- Use it once. A memorable phrase is not a master key for every service. Create a separate secret for each account.
Do not “upgrade” a familiar phrase with predictable edits
Replacing an “o” with “0,” adding an exclamation point, capitalizing the first letter, or appending the current year may satisfy an old composition checklist while leaving the underlying guess obvious. NIST’s current guidance advises verifiers not to impose mandatory mixtures of character types, because people often meet those rules in predictable ways. A long, unpredictable phrase is more useful than a short phrase padded with formulaic substitutions.

When a randomly generated password is the better choice
Let the manager handle accounts you rarely use
Random strings are particularly useful for accounts you visit infrequently, have no reason to memorize, or cannot safely personalize. A manager can generate a separate credential, save the site address and username, and fill the password when needed. This avoids the recall burden that grows with the number of secrets a person must retain; NIST’s usability guidance also notes that infrequently used passwords are more difficult to remember.
Protect the manager’s own access
The manager becomes the place where many credentials are maintained, so its primary password or unlock method deserves special care. Make that one secret a long, unique passphrase that you can remember. Enable the recovery and additional-authentication options the service provides, and keep recovery information current. Do not copy the manager’s primary password into another account or reuse it elsewhere.
A manager does not make phishing harmless. Before allowing autofill, verify that the page’s domain is the legitimate site you intended to visit. If a fake site receives a password, the generated credential’s randomness cannot undo the disclosure.
Expect occasional manual entry
Even with a manager, you may need to type a password when setting up a new device, using a private browsing environment, signing in to a television or game console, or recovering from a lost session. Keep the primary passphrase memorable and know how to retrieve your stored credentials through the manager’s supported recovery process.
How to decide for each account
| Account or situation | Recommended secret | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Password manager’s primary unlock | Long, unique passphrase you can recall | You may need it before autofill is available, and it protects the stored credential set |
| Everyday website or app supported by your manager | Unique random password generated by the manager | There is little benefit in memorizing another credential when the manager can store and enter it |
| Device login or recovery account you must enter manually | Long, unpredictable passphrase | Manual entry makes recall important |
| Rarely used service | Unique random password in the manager | Infrequent use increases the chance of forgetting a self-created password |
| Service that rejects long input or spaces | The strongest unique secret the service accepts | Site limitations may prevent an ideal passphrase; never compensate by reusing it elsewhere |
This is a workflow decision, not a ranking in which one format wins everywhere. The same person can reasonably use one passphrase for a primary unlock and dozens of random passwords for individual services.

Set up a safer password routine
Step 1: choose the small set of secrets you will remember
List the accounts or devices that require manual entry. Keep that list short. For each one, create a different passphrase using unrelated words, remove personal references, and avoid quotations or phrases already published as examples. Do not write a “pattern” that lets someone derive every password from the first one.
Step 2: install and configure a password manager
- Choose a password manager that supports your operating system and browsers, then create its primary unlock passphrase.
- Turn on the manager’s supported synchronization and recovery features only after reviewing how they work. Record recovery information in the manager’s recommended secure manner rather than reusing the primary passphrase.
- Enable its browser or mobile integration so it can offer autofill on the sites you use.
- Set the generator to create a different credential for each new account. Use the longest length and character options that the target site accepts without making the entry unusable.
- Save the generated password with the correct site address and username, then sign in once to confirm that the credential works.
Step 3: replace reused passwords
- Start with email, financial, work, cloud-storage, and other accounts that could unlock additional services.
- Change each password at the account’s official settings page, not through a link in an unexpected message.
- Generate a fresh random password, save it, and sign out and back in to verify the update.
- Do not change several accounts to variations of one base phrase. Every entry should be independent.
Step 4: test the recovery path
Before an emergency, confirm that you know how to unlock the manager on a second device and how to use its documented account-recovery process. A backup that is inaccessible when your main phone or computer is lost is not a practical backup. Follow the manager’s own security instructions; do not place the primary passphrase in an unprotected notes file or email draft.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What websites should support—and what you can do when they do not
NIST’s password usability guidance says verifiers should allow at least 64 characters to support passphrases, accept spaces, and support password-manager entry, including paste or autofill where available. This is guidance for service operators, not a guarantee that every site follows it. A service may impose a shorter maximum, reject spaces, or block paste.
When a site rejects a long phrase, use a unique generated password within the site’s stated limit. Do not trim a password that you already use elsewhere and do not fall back to a reused favorite. If the site silently truncates input, changing the visible ending may not change the stored password; use a different credential and verify it by signing out and back in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf autofill fails, check that the saved domain and username match the page, then use the manager’s copy function only on a page you have independently confirmed. Avoid disabling security controls merely to make a site accept a password. Report unreasonable limits to the service, but protect the account with the strongest unique value it currently accepts.

Limits that password length cannot fix
Phishing and fake login pages
A long passphrase can be handed directly to an attacker if you enter it into a convincing but fraudulent page. Check the address and context before signing in, and do not follow unexpected password-reset links. A password manager’s refusal to autofill on an unrecognized domain can provide a useful warning, but it is not a substitute for checking the page yourself.
Social engineering
An attacker may persuade you to disclose a password, approve a login, or reveal recovery information. No amount of added length prevents a voluntary disclosure. Treat urgent requests for credentials or codes as suspicious and use a known-good route to contact the organization.
Keystroke logging and compromised devices
Malware that records keystrokes or captures a session can defeat both passphrases and random strings. NIST explicitly notes that phishing, social engineering, and keystroke logging are not solved by password length or complexity. Keep your operating system, browser, and security software maintained, and avoid entering credentials on devices you do not trust.

Common mistakes and their fixes
- Using one memorable phrase everywhere: replace it with one unique passphrase for the account that needs memorization and manager-generated passwords for the rest.
- Relying on a quotation: rebuild the passphrase from unrelated words that are not publicly associated with one another.
- Adding “!” and the current year to an old password: generate a genuinely new secret instead of making a predictable edit.
- Choosing a short password because a site rejects spaces: use the maximum unique value the site accepts and do not reuse it.
- Memorizing every random string: store those credentials in a password manager so recall is not the limiting factor.
- Ignoring rarely used accounts: change their reused passwords and store new random credentials before you need them.
- Putting the manager’s primary password in the manager itself: keep the primary passphrase outside the vault and follow the documented recovery process.
- Assuming a password solves phishing: verify domains, distrust unexpected requests, and remember that credential theft can happen regardless of password format.
What current NIST guidance says
The current standard identified for this topic is NIST Special Publication 800-63B-4, published in July 2025. Its strength guidance emphasizes password length, recognizes passphrases as a way to create longer secrets, and rejects mandatory composition rules as a general verifier policy.
Its usability guidance tells service operators to “Allow at least 64 characters in length to support the use of passphrases.” The same guidance addresses spaces and password-manager entry, including paste or autofill where available. These recommendations describe what a well-designed service should permit; they do not override a particular site’s documented limits.
NIST also publishes consumer advice in How Do I Create a Good Password? and discusses password-manager use in its SP 800-63 FAQ. A NIST publication record, Character Strings, Memory and Passwords: What a Recall Study Can Tell Us, identifies research on remembering strings of varying lengths and complexity, but the cited material does not provide results that justify a universal memorability percentage or a numerical passphrase-versus-random-password winner.
A practical decision checklist
- Must you type the secret without a password manager? Choose a long, unpredictable passphrase.
- Can a manager generate and fill it? Use a unique random password instead of memorizing another one.
- Is the proposed secret based on a quotation, personal detail, keyboard pattern, or predictable substitution? Replace it.
- Is the same password used anywhere else? Change it immediately and make the replacement unique.
- Does the site support long input, spaces, paste, or autofill? Use those capabilities when available; if not, use the strongest unique value within its limits.
- Could phishing, social engineering, or malware capture the credential? Treat those as separate threats that password format alone cannot prevent.
The most useful routine is simple: remember a long, unique passphrase only where manual recall is unavoidable, and let a password manager generate and store a different random password everywhere else. That arrangement combines human usability with the strongest practical protection against password reuse and predictable choices.
