Passkeys are generally safer than authenticator-app codes against phishing when signing in to a bank. A passkey is tied cryptographically to the legitimate service, while a one-time code can be typed into a fake login page and relayed to the bank. Authenticator apps are still a meaningful improvement over SMS codes, which can be exposed through SIM swapping. Your best option also depends on what your bank supports and how it handles recovery.

Why passkeys are harder to phish

A passkey uses public-key cryptography: the bank keeps a public key, while the corresponding private credential stays with your device or passkey provider. When you sign in, the authentication is bound to the bank’s legitimate service identity. A lookalike site cannot simply ask you to reveal the passkey secret in the way it can collect a typed code.

NIST describes WebAuthn’s protection as “verifier name binding”: the authenticator selects a credential based on the authenticated domain name. That binding is the central security difference—not that passkeys make every form of account takeover impossible. See NIST SP 800-63B, Authentication and Authenticator Management. NIST’s consumer guidance says passkeys “can’t be easily stolen through phishing and don’t require memorization,” not that they guarantee safety from every attack: NIST guidance on passwords and passkeys.

How authenticator-app codes compare

An authenticator app generates a short-lived one-time password (OTP). It avoids relying on a text message or phone number to deliver the code, but the code is still a secret you type into a login. A convincing fake bank page can capture it and relay it to the real bank before it expires. NIST therefore does not consider manually entered OTPs phishing-resistant.

The Federal Trade Commission says an authenticator app is safer than text-message verification because its codes are not susceptible to SIM-card swapping or compromise of the user’s email account in the way SMS codes can be. It also cautions that an app or security key is safer than text messages when available. App codes remain vulnerable to phishing if entered on an impostor page. Read the FTC’s two-factor authentication guidance.

Passkeys, authenticator apps, and SMS at a glance

Method Phishing and code relay SIM-swap exposure What to check
Passkey Strong resistance: authentication is bound to the legitimate service identity. Does not rely on receiving an SMS code. Whether your bank supports passkeys, and how the passkey and bank account can be recovered.
Authenticator-app OTP A typed code can be captured and relayed from a fake sign-in page. Avoids the phone-number path used for SMS delivery. How to save recovery codes securely and regain access if you lose the device.
SMS OTP A manually entered code can be phished. Text messages may be intercepted after a SIM swap. Use a stronger supported option if your bank offers one.

Recovery is part of the security decision

A passkey’s practical security depends partly on where it is stored and how it can be restored. Some passkeys are synced across devices through a provider account; others may be device-bound. NIST notes that correctly implemented syncable authenticators can make recovery and cross-device use easier, but syncing and recovery arrangements vary. Secure the account that manages synced passkeys, and review the bank’s own account-recovery route. NIST’s supplement on syncable authenticators explains the recovery and portability considerations.

Authenticator apps also need a recovery plan. Keep any bank-issued backup or recovery codes somewhere private and protected, rather than in an easily accessible note alongside your login details. Never disclose an unexpected one-time code to someone who contacts you; a caller or message asking for it could be trying to complete a login as you.

Choose the strongest option your bank actually supports

  1. Check the bank’s official sign-in settings. Use its official app or type its known web address yourself. Look for passkeys or another phishing-resistant method, then review the bank’s official recovery instructions.
  2. If passkeys are offered, set one up through the bank. Follow the bank’s instructions and check how the credential is backed up, synced, or restored, including what happens if you lose your device.
  3. If there is no passkey option, choose an authenticator app over SMS when available. Keep recovery codes private and do not enter a code on a page reached through an unexpected link or message.
  4. Consider a FIDO2 security key only if the bank accepts it. External keys are FIDO2 authenticators, but support is not universal; verify compatibility with both your bank and your devices before relying on one as a backup. See the FIDO Alliance authentication specifications.

Bank-by-bank passkey availability and accepted backup methods differ, so no single option can be assumed to work everywhere. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s published direction is to recommend passkeys where services support them and two-step verification otherwise; that is guidance, not a list of compatible banks. See the NCSC announcement reported by FIDO Alliance.
