PartyKit is a platform for building and deploying stateful servers for real-time multiplayer and collaborative applications. A PartyKit room is backed by a Cloudflare Durable Object and can handle HTTP requests and WebSocket connections addressed by a room identifier. The project has changed since Bytes covered its public launch in 2023: Cloudflare announced it had acquired PartyKit on April 5, 2024.
What PartyKit is for
PartyKit provides JavaScript and TypeScript APIs and a deployment platform for applications where clients need to share or update state in real time. Examples include collaborative tools and multiplayer experiences in which multiple users interact with the same room or session. Its interfaces use standard HTTP and WebSockets, so clients can connect from browsers, native mobile apps, or embedded devices, according to the PartyKit documentation.
The original PartyKit repository describes the project as open source and directs current development to Cloudflare’s PartyKit repository. The 2023 Bytes issue that introduced the platform also reported a $2.5 million raise from Sequoia Capital. That figure is a launch-era report from October 2, 2023, not a current statement about PartyKit’s funding.
How PartyKit rooms handle real-time connections
PartyKit’s basic unit is a Party: a stateful server associated with a room. The application’s server code defines how that room behaves, while PartyKit routes HTTP requests and WebSocket connections to it using a room identifier. This room-based approach gives an application a place to coordinate activity among its connected clients.
#1 Best Overall
PartyKit’s current documentation says each Party is backed by a Cloudflare Durable Object. Developers write server behavior using PartyKit’s JavaScript or TypeScript API and deploy with the PartyKit CLI. These are product and architecture descriptions from PartyKit; they are not independent measurements of latency, scale, or performance.
The Bytes launch coverage named WebSockets, Fetch, and request-response patterns, and noted integrations with Yjs and Automerge. Cloudflare’s later acquisition announcement also referred to Yjs and React integration. For a specific project, check the current API and integration guides rather than assuming every launch-era integration remains supported in the same way.

What changed after the 2023 launch
Cloudflare announced PartyKit’s acquisition on April 5, 2024. The announcement said PartyKit began in 2022 as a project to make Durable Objects more accessible through familiar components. Cloudflare said existing projects would continue working as expected and described plans for further integration with Workers and Pages. Those continuity and roadmap statements reflect the announcement at that date; they should not be read as a guarantee of current product terms or future plans.

Choose between managed PartyKit and cloud-prem deployment
The deployment guide describes two routes. The managed platform handles operations and provisions resources such as static assets, Durable Objects, and routes. With cloud-prem deployment, a project is deployed into the developer’s own Cloudflare account, giving the developer more direct account control.
| Deployment route | Who handles the platform setup | When it may fit | Cost qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed PartyKit | PartyKit’s managed platform handles operations and provisions required resources, according to its deployment guide. | When you want the platform to manage infrastructure tasks rather than deploy through your own Cloudflare account. | Check current PartyKit and Cloudflare terms; the available documentation does not establish a current all-in deployment price. |
| Cloud-prem | You deploy into your own Cloudflare account. | The guide cites regulatory requirements, an existing Cloudflare domain, or working alongside existing Workers and services as reasons to consider it. | The guide says the PartyKit platform fee is free for cloud-prem deployments. This does not mean Cloudflare usage is free; Cloudflare service charges may apply. |
Choose based on how much account control and operations responsibility your project needs. The documentation’s platform-fee statement concerns PartyKit’s fee, not the cost of underlying Cloudflare resources. Confirm current account prerequisites, service charges, and deployment behavior in the live guides before committing to either route.
