Use a parry when the game rewards a precisely timed deflection, the incoming attack is eligible, and you can read its impact point consistently. Use a dodge when avoiding damage is the immediate priority, the attack is a poor or impossible parry target, or moving out of the hit zone gives you a better position. Neither defense is universally safer: the correct choice depends on the game’s timing rules, attack properties, resources, equipment, and your own execution reliability.
Parry and dodge solve different problems
A parry is a timing-dependent defensive action. You activate it just before an attack connects, and a successful deflection may do more than prevent damage: it can damage posture, stagger the attacker, or create a counterattack or critical-hit opening. Those rewards are entirely game-specific.
A dodge is an evasion action. You move the character out of the attack’s effective area, often changing your distance or angle at the same time. In its Elden Ring online manual, FromSoftware describes rolling as useful when you want to evade enemy attacks. A roll therefore does not automatically produce the offensive opening that a successful parry can produce; its value is reliable damage avoidance and repositioning.

| Question | Parry | Dodge |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Deflect an attack at a narrow timing point | Evade the attack by moving away or around it |
| Typical successful result | May cause posture damage, a stagger, or a punish opportunity, depending on the game | Avoids the hit and may improve your position for the next action |
| What must be known | Whether the move is parryable and when its active timing occurs | How far the attack reaches, where its hit area travels, and how the dodge moves you |
| Main practical risk | A mistimed input can leave you exposed; the exact penalty varies by game | You can still be caught if the movement is late, too short, or aimed into another hit area |
| Best use case | A readable, eligible attack followed by a valuable counter window | An unclear, sweeping, delayed, or otherwise unsuitable attack when survival matters most |
The table describes decision categories, not universal frame data. Games differ in startup, active timing, recovery, invulnerability, stamina use, and punish windows.
When a parry is the better choice
The attack is confirmed as parryable
Do not assume that every enemy move can be deflected. Games commonly separate attacks that respond to a parry from attacks that require blocking, guarding, jumping, or evasion. Learn the rule for the specific game and enemy. If the game gives an unmistakable signal that a move cannot be parried, attempting one turns a known defensive situation into an avoidable gamble.
You can read the impact moment
Parry timing should be based on the point at which the attack would hit your character, not merely on the first animation frame. Watch the weapon, limb, or effect that actually reaches you. Delayed swings, feints, multi-hit strings, and attacks whose travel time changes with distance can make an early reaction fail even when the initial telegraph looks familiar.

A parry is worth choosing when its reward is meaningful in the current encounter. A posture break, stagger, critical-hit opportunity, or safe counter window can shorten a dangerous exchange. If the reward is small, unreliable, or unavailable against the target, a dodge may offer better practical value even when a parry is technically possible.
You have a follow-up ready
Plan the action after the deflection before you press the button. Some games require a dedicated critical attack, a directional input, or a short approach to exploit the opening. If you are out of range, facing the wrong direction, or committed to another animation, the parry may succeed without producing the expected damage.

When dodging is the better choice
The move is not a good parry target
Use evasion for attacks that the game marks as unparryable, for attacks with an uncertain rule, or when you have not learned the enemy’s timing. This is especially important for attacks that cover a broad area, contain several hits, or have a delayed release. A dodge removes you from the danger without requiring you to identify a single contact frame.
You need to change position
Dodging can move you outside an arc, behind an enemy, or beyond the endpoint of a linear attack. Position matters when the enemy’s next move, your weapon’s reach, or the terrain makes standing in front of the target unsafe. Choose a direction that leaves space for the next threat; escaping one swing into another enemy or a wall is not a successful defensive sequence.
Your timing is not consistent yet
A high-reward defense is useful only when you can execute it under pressure. During learning, use the option that gives you the most repeatable survival while you study the animation. Once you can recognize the contact moment, add the parry as a deliberate response rather than replacing every dodge with a reaction test.
The encounter has several simultaneous threats
Parrying normally focuses your attention on one incoming action. When projectiles, area effects, or multiple enemies overlap, moving to a safer location may solve more problems at once. Check the destination before committing: a dodge is an escape route, not a guarantee of safety if another hit occupies that route.
A practical decision process during a fight
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure which defense to select. It is a framework for applying a game’s rules, not a universal timing recipe.

- Identify the threat. Determine which enemy and which attack is about to reach you. Do not react to a general wind-up if another enemy is the actual source of the danger.
- Check eligibility. Recall whether this attack can be parried in the current game. If you do not know, treat it as an evasion problem until you have tested it safely.
- Read the trajectory. Estimate where the hit will travel and whether it is a single contact, a sequence, a sweep, or an area effect. This tells you whether one precise deflection or a movement path is realistic.
- Assess your position. Ask whether staying in front of the enemy is useful. If a successful parry would leave you out of range, or if the arena is crowded, moving may have greater value.
- Check resources and equipment. Consider the game’s stamina, guard, shield, posture, or other costs. A defense that you cannot repeat for the next attack is not automatically the best defense for the current one.
- Choose one response and commit. Switching from a late parry to a late dodge often fails because both inputs arrive after the safe window. Make the decision from the earliest reliable cue.
- Execute the follow-up. After a successful parry, perform the game-specific punish. After a dodge, face the next threat, recover your spacing, and avoid attacking blindly into a second animation.
- Update your rule. If the move behaved differently than expected, record the useful fact: its timing was delayed, its second hit tracked your movement, or it did not accept a parry. Apply that observation on the next attempt.
Elden Ring: a clear example of different defensive jobs
Elden Ring’s official materials distinguish evasion, parrying, and shield roles rather than treating them as interchangeable actions.
What the online manual says
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring online manual states, “Rolling is also useful when you want to evade enemy attacks.” It separately explains that using a shield with the parry skill to repel an enemy’s melee attack can break the enemy’s stance and create an opportunity for a critical hit. The same manual cautions that some enemies do not lose their stance from one parry. Thus, a successful parry can create an offensive state, but it is not an automatic critical hit against every target.
How equipment changes the decision
Bandai Namco’s combat guide describes the shield roles this way: “Greatshields are best for blocking due to their high damage negation and higher guard boost on average, Small Shields are best for parrying and can block in an emergency, and Medium shields are considered the ‘all-rounder’ with decent damage mitigation and the ability to parry.” That recommendation is specific to Elden Ring; it should not be generalized to another game’s shield system.
| Elden Ring shield category | Role described in the official guide | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Small shields | Best for parrying; can block in an emergency | Choose when you are building around deflections but still need limited emergency protection |
| Medium shields | All-round option with damage mitigation and the ability to parry | Useful when you want both conventional blocking and access to parries |
| Greatshields | Best for blocking because of high damage negation and higher guard boost on average | Favors absorbing attacks rather than assuming every encounter should be solved with a parry |
Elden Ring also makes movement and blocking part of a stamina economy, so the choice is not only about animation timing. A player who spends too much stamina on movement or guarding may lack the resource needed for the next defensive action. The official descriptions establish the roles and outcomes, but they do not provide a universal parry window for every weapon, enemy, or version. Learn each target’s eligible attacks in the current game rather than importing timing advice from another title.
Sekiro: deflection as a central posture tool
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice demonstrates a different balance. Activision’s mechanics guide says that the main ways to break an enemy’s posture are attacking and deflecting attacks by pressing the guard button “the moment before a blow lands.” In this system, deflection is closely tied to the posture objective, so recognizing the contact moment is central to offensive progress as well as defense.

The same guide also identifies step dodge as a safety-roll option if the player is downed or posture-broken. That coexistence matters: a game can strongly reward deflection while still providing an evasion response for recovery or emergencies. Do not transfer Sekiro’s emphasis on deflection to another action game and assume its guard timing, posture rules, or dodge behavior will match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read an attack before choosing
Single, direct strikes
A single strike with a clear release and contact point is the most natural candidate for a parry, provided the game allows it. Start by learning the moment the attack would connect, then refine your input timing. If the enemy’s animation is difficult to read at close range, create enough distance to observe the motion before practicing.
Delayed attacks
A delayed swing is designed to punish an early response. Hold your attention on the attacking part rather than the first shoulder or weapon movement. If the delay is inconsistent or the move has several branches, dodge until you can distinguish the versions reliably.
Multi-hit strings
One successful deflection may not answer the entire sequence. Determine whether the game expects repeated deflections, permits a retreat after the first hit, or gives you a counter window before the string ends. A dodge can be preferable when you cannot safely account for every remaining hit.

Sweeps, area attacks, and tracking moves
Large attacks test the destination of your movement as much as the timing of your input. Move toward a clear area or an angle that the hit does not cover. Parry only when the game’s rules explicitly make the particular move eligible and your position lets you meet the attack at its contact point.

Attacks from off-screen or multiple enemies
When the source is outside your view, a precise parry is usually a poor first assumption because you lack the visual timing cue. Prioritize movement toward a safer camera angle or open space, then re-engage when the threat is identifiable.
Practice without turning every attempt into a gamble
- Choose one enemy and one move. Do not practice an entire moveset at once. Select a repeatable attack whose eligibility you can verify.
- Observe several repetitions. Watch the wind-up, release, travel, and recovery before pressing a defensive input. Note whether distance changes the apparent timing.
- Test the safer response first. Use a dodge to learn the attack’s reach and endpoint. This gives you information about where the danger area actually is.
- Attempt the parry from a stable position. Stand where the attack reaches you consistently, then press at the game’s indicated contact moment. Avoid changing direction during the timing test.
- Confirm the reward. Look for the game’s actual result: posture damage, stagger, a critical prompt, or another clearly defined opening. Do not assume that a blocked animation equals a successful parry.
- Repeat under variation. Practice from a different distance or after a short exchange so you know whether the timing depends on spacing, animation state, or camera position.
- Keep the reliable fallback. If the attack becomes unreadable, return to the dodge or other confirmed defense instead of forcing the experiment during a high-risk attempt.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Parrying every visible attack: Eligibility is a rule to learn, not an assumption. Mark attacks that require evasion or another defense.
- Pressing on the wind-up: The useful cue is usually the approach to contact. Rewatch the striking part and delay your input until the attack is about to land.
- Ignoring the second hit: A first deflection or dodge may not end a sequence. Watch for follow-up swings, lingering effects, and tracking behavior.
- Expecting a reward without a punish: A stagger or opening may require a separate attack, a specific range, or a directional input. Learn the follow-up instead of standing still.
- Copying timing from another game: Similar buttons do not imply similar windows. Treat each game, enemy, and version as its own ruleset.
- Choosing a defense that conflicts with your build: Equipment can favor blocking, parrying, or mobility. In Elden Ring, for example, official guidance assigns different roles to small, medium, and greatshields.
- Practicing only when panicked: Build recognition in a controlled encounter first, then apply it in crowded fights where the same cue is harder to see.
- Changing plans too late: Decide from the earliest reliable signal. A last-second switch can miss both the parry timing and the dodge path.
How to choose a default defense for a new game
When starting an unfamiliar action game, begin with the defense whose rules are easiest to verify. Read the in-game tutorial or manual for the names of parryable attacks, evasion behavior, resource costs, and any posture or stagger system. Test one enemy in a low-consequence encounter, then write a simple rule for yourself: for example, use a parry only on a clearly signaled single strike, and dodge everything else until confirmed.
Gradually expand that rule as you collect evidence from the game itself. Add attacks only after you know their timing and result. If your success rate is inconsistent, keep the dodge as your baseline and use the parry selectively for moves with a large, reliable payoff. Consistency is a practical advantage even when the parry offers a theoretically higher reward.

Final decision checklist
- Is this exact attack parryable in this game?
- Can you identify the moment it will make contact?
- What does a successful parry actually reward against this enemy?
- Do you have the range, resource, and follow-up required to exploit that reward?
- Where will a dodge place you, and is that destination clear?
- Are other attacks or enemies likely to occupy your chosen escape route?
- Which response can you execute consistently under the current pressure?
If the first four answers support a clear reward and the last three favor staying mobile, parry. If eligibility or timing is uncertain, the attack covers too much space, or movement creates a safer position, dodge. Re-evaluate after each encounter because the answer belongs to the specific game and enemy, not to the button label alone.
