Indoor AMRs and outdoor LiDAR-equipped robots do not automatically need separate platforms. The right architecture depends on the surfaces, facility interfaces, localization conditions, weather, safety boundaries and power requirements at a specific site. LiDAR is used in both indoor and outdoor AMR applications, while an underground garage can be GPS-denied. What may need to change is the robot’s configuration and integration—not necessarily every part of its platform.

Why the indoor-versus-outdoor split is not universal

The title’s claim that indoor AMRs and outdoor LiDAR cannot share a platform is too broad. “Indoor” does not guarantee GPS availability, and LiDAR is not an outdoor-only sensor. Mircea Gradu, affiliated with Velodyne LiDAR, wrote in a 2021 SAE paper that “Next generation sensors, such as advanced 3D lidar, will increase AMRs’ abilities to monitor and respond to their changing surroundings in both indoor and outdoor applications.” That is the paper author’s vendor-affiliated perspective, not an independent product test or standard. SAE paper on advanced 3D LiDAR for AMRs.

A more useful question is whether a particular robot configuration can meet the full operating envelope of a particular parking deployment. Shared components may be feasible, but the evidence here does not establish that any specific chassis, sensor suite or fleet system can serve every indoor and outdoor site without modification.

What requirements determine the architecture?

Surface, transitions and facility layout

Assess the actual route: floor and ground surfaces, ramps, transitions, obstacles, work zones and prohibited areas. Facility digital interfaces can matter as much as the travel surface. AMRA-201:2026 provides general mobile-robot requirements and test methods for industrial and service settings, including environments with multiple terrains; it is a baseline, not proof that a particular robot fits a site. Localization and mapping

Do not assume a parking structure has usable GPS simply because it is an indoor site. Underground garages may be GPS-denied. A 2020 SAE paper describes tightly coupled LiDAR/IMU odometry and mapping for this setting and reports stable pose estimation in a dynamic underground parking environment. Its accessible abstract reports the result qualitatively, not as a numerical performance figure. SAE paper on LiDAR/IMU odometry in underground parking.

For a deployment, examine how the robot creates and updates maps, controls drift, handles moving vehicles and people, and combines sensor inputs. The cited paper supports LiDAR/IMU as an approach in the described underground-park context; it does not establish that this approach is required or sufficient for every garage or outdoor route.

Perception and environmental conditions

Set perception requirements around the objects the robot must detect, the needed range and discrimination, lighting, and sensor-data processing. The 2021 SAE paper identifies perception quality and environmental operating range among design considerations, but does not provide specifications for a particular robot. A 2023 research record on rain-aware 3D LiDAR notes that raindrops can be mistaken for objects; it does not establish a universal effect size or a model-specific remedy. Power and operating envelope

Sensor energy burden and environmental operating range can affect configuration choices. The cited material does not state temperature limits, weather ratings, sensor range, ingress protection or battery consumption for any particular robot. Obtain those figures for the exact equipment and deployment conditions rather than treating “indoor” or “outdoor” as a complete specification.

Safety, boundaries and verification

Define where the robot may travel, which areas are excluded, how it interacts with people and vehicles, and what evidence will demonstrate safe operation. AMRA-300 offers guidance for facility requirements and human-robot safety considerations; AMRA-201 supplies general requirements and test methods. What can be shared—and what may need to differ?

“Platform” can refer to the chassis, sensors, localization stack, safety functions, fleet software or facility integration. A requirement-based review separates those layers instead of presuming that every indoor/outdoor deployment demands a wholly different robot.

  • Potentially common: parts of the robot and software architecture may be shared if they satisfy both sites’ requirements. The cited sources do not verify a specific shared design.
  • Configuration-dependent: sensor selection and processing, localization and mapping, environmental protection, power planning, and route or safety settings may need to reflect the deployment.
  • Facility-dependent: digital interfaces, work areas, prohibited areas and operational boundaries must be defined for the site.
  • Unresolved without product evidence: whether one model can cover both envelopes, and whether it needs hardware or software changes, cannot be decided from the indoor/outdoor labels alone.

There is no directly comparable performance figure in the cited material that would justify a universal claim about accuracy, range, cost or outdoor capability. Product selection therefore requires specifications and validation for the exact robot and route.

Keep parking robot types and system boundaries distinct

Automated valet parking (AVPS) and a low-profile robot that physically moves a parked vehicle are not interchangeable system categories. ISO 23374-1:2023 describes level-4 automated valet parking for unoccupied vehicles in prescribed parking-facility areas. It divides the system among vehicle, facility-equipment and user domains, making clear that automation can cross subsystem boundaries. It does not establish a chassis or sensor layout for every parking robot. ISO 23374-1:2023.

For any proposed system, identify which functions reside on the robot, in facility equipment and in user systems. Do not use the AVPS standard as evidence for a different kind of vehicle-moving robot.

A practical way to decide whether one platform fits

  1. Define the operating envelope. Record the route’s surfaces, ramps, transitions, obstacles, indoor and outdoor segments, weather exposure and operating areas.
  2. Check localization conditions. Establish where GPS is unavailable or unreliable, how maps are created and maintained, and how the system handles dynamic scenes and drift.
  3. Specify perception needs. Document required object detection and discrimination, lighting and weather conditions, and the processing expected of each sensor.
  4. Confirm power and environmental limits. Request model-specific operating ranges and energy data for the intended duty cycle; do not infer them from a sensor category.
  5. Map system responsibilities. Separate robot functions from facility equipment and user-system functions, and define work and excluded zones.
  6. Validate the exact configuration. Review product-specific evidence and test it against the actual operating envelope. General standards can guide requirements and test methods, but they do not substitute for deployment-specific verification.
