Ask the school to identify exactly what the AI system does, what decisions it can influence, what evidence supports it, what data and vendors are involved, how accuracy and bias were tested, and whether a qualified human makes the final decision. You should also request the written AI policy, privacy notice, contract safeguards, and a named privacy or safeguarding contact. Ask how to inspect results, correct errors, opt out where available, and appeal a decision.

“AI testing” is not one technology. It can mean automated scoring, prediction or profiling, placement recommendations, remote invigilation, plagiarism or AI-use detection, adaptive assessment, or analysis of student work. The questions below help you determine whether a particular system is merely assisting a teacher or materially affecting your child’s education.

Start with the system’s purpose and decision power

Begin with one precise question: “What exactly does the system do, and does its output affect grades, placement, discipline, special-education services, or access to opportunities?” Ask the school to answer in plain language rather than describing the product only by its brand or technical label.

A tool that suggests practice exercises has a different risk from one that recommends a class track or flags a student for misconduct. UK guidance discusses automated decision-making and profiling, while Pennsylvania guidance treats grading and placement as high-impact uses that require human review. The school should tell you which category applies to your child’s use case.

Ask what problem the school is solving

  • What educational or administrative problem prompted adoption?
  • What does success look like after implementation?
  • What evidence shows that the tool improves learning or makes assessment fairer?
  • Is this a pilot? If so, how long will it run, when will results be evaluated, and what would cause the school to stop or change it?

Pennsylvania’s official guidance recommends asking what problem the tool solves, what success looks like, and how long the school will use it before assessing success or failure. A school that cannot define a measurable purpose should not be using an algorithm merely because it is available.

Map every possible consequence

Ask whether the output is advisory or can determine or trigger an action. List each possible consequence: a grade, a course or school placement, a discipline referral, a disability identification, eligibility for support, or access to a program. Ask who signs off on the result and whether the AI can make a decision without a person reviewing the underlying evidence.

Require meaningful human review

For high-impact decisions, ask which qualified educator reviews every result, what information that person sees, and whether they can override the recommendation. Pennsylvania guidance states that human judgment should be the final step in grading, placement and discipline decisions. A nominal “human in the loop” is not enough if staff simply accept a score without examining the evidence.

Questions about the reviewer

  • Which role or person is accountable for the decision?
  • What training does that reviewer receive about the model’s limits and common errors?
  • Must the reviewer document reasons for accepting or overriding an output?
  • Can a teacher who knows the child provide additional context?
  • Is there a second-level review for decisions that remove opportunities or impose discipline?

Ask what happens when the system is unavailable, produces conflicting results, or has not been validated for a particular subject, age group or school population. There should be a workable non-AI process rather than an automatic decision to delay or deny support.

Test accuracy, errors and educational validity

A high overall accuracy claim can hide serious problems for individual children. Ask for the validation data, the test population, and separate false-positive and false-negative rates. A false positive might label original student work as AI-generated or flag a child for intervention; a false negative might miss a learning need or unsafe behavior.

Questions that expose weak validation

  • What skill is the system intended to measure, and how do you know it measures that skill rather than language style, prior test exposure or access to technology?
  • How were results checked across subjects, ages, year groups and the school’s own population?
  • How stable are scores when the same work is submitted again or reviewed by a human?
  • How often are false positives and false negatives measured?
  • What evidence supports the specific version in use, and what changes when the vendor updates it?

For assessment, ask whether the AI output is being treated as evidence or as a grade. A predictive score is not proof that a child has mastered or failed to master a concept. Request the underlying rubric, examples of acceptable and unacceptable outputs, and the teacher’s independent assessment method.

Check bias, disability access and language equity

Ask how performance was tested for disabled students, multilingual learners and other groups that may be disadvantaged. Pennsylvania guidance says AI adoption must not create barriers for students with disabilities or multilingual learners. A system trained primarily on one language variety, handwriting style or communication pattern may produce different error rates for other children.

Ask about accommodations and alternatives

  • Which accessibility features are built in, and have disabled students tested them?
  • Can the child use approved assistive technology, extra time, a human reader or another accommodation without the system treating it as suspicious?
  • How does the tool handle second-language writing, accents, code-switching or translated responses?
  • What equivalent non-AI assessment is available if the system is inaccessible or inappropriate?
  • Who monitors subgroup results and investigates a disparity?

Ask the school to explain how it will detect a pattern rather than waiting for one family to prove discrimination. An alternative should be genuinely equivalent in educational purpose and opportunity, not a substantially harder or lower-value route.

Find out what data the test collects

Request a field-by-field description of the information sent to the system and why each field is necessary. Possible inputs include names and student identifiers, assessment responses, writing samples, audio or video, disability or health information, behavioral records, device details and location data. Data minimization means collecting only what the stated purpose requires.

Ask whether student work trains a model

UK guidance says schools should understand how personal data is processed and prevent pupil data from being used to further train a model unless that use is safe and permitted. Ask directly:

  • Is my child’s work, voice, image or feedback used to train or improve a vendor model?
  • Is training optional, and can the school disable it for this deployment?
  • Are de-identified or aggregated records still retained or reused?
  • Which vendor sub-processors receive the data?
  • Is data sold, used for advertising, or combined with information from other services?

Do not accept “the data is anonymous” without asking how re-identification risk is managed, especially when a small class, rare disability or distinctive voice is involved.

Review retention, security and contracts

Ask where data is stored, how long each category is retained, and what happens when the school year or contract ends. UK procurement guidance says contracts should address security, sub-processors, deletion and return of data, breach notification and staff access controls.

Documents to request

  • The school or district AI policy and the tool’s privacy notice.
  • The data-processing or service agreement, including sub-processor terms.
  • Retention and deletion schedules for student records and backups.
  • Security controls, access permissions and breach-notification procedures.
  • The vendor’s process for model updates and notifying the school of material changes.

Ask whether the school can retrieve essential records in a usable format and delete copies held by the vendor when the contract ends. Clarify who can access raw recordings or sensitive profiles and whether access is logged and periodically reviewed.

Ask about notice, consent and opting out

Request the privacy notice and the legal basis for processing. If the school relies on consent, ask who must provide it, what a refusal means, and how consent can be withdrawn. UK guidance says parents should have a choice where consent is relied upon. In the United States, FERPA’s study exception has specific purposes and requires a written agreement specifying the study and the use and destruction of information.

Questions for an opt-out meeting

  1. Which exact activity can my child opt out of: collection, automated scoring, model training, or the entire assessment?
  2. What equivalent assessment or learning activity will replace it?
  3. Will opting out affect grades, placement, services, participation or teacher expectations?
  4. How is the decision recorded, and for how long?
  5. Can I change my choice later?

Rights differ under FERPA, COPPA, UK data-protection law, Australian frameworks and state rules. Ask the school which law, policy, contract and complaint route govern your child’s situation; no single international rule answers every opt-out question.

Demand an understandable explanation and appeal route

Ask whether the school will show the result, the main inputs and an explanation a parent and child can understand. You should know who can correct an error, the deadline for doing so, and what happens while an appeal is pending. A meaningful process lets you submit contrary evidence, speak with a responsible educator and obtain a written outcome.

Include these points in a written appeal

  • Identify the decision, date and system involved.
  • Request the relevant output, inputs and human-review record.
  • Explain factual errors, missing context or accessibility issues.
  • Ask that no irreversible action occur until the review is complete.
  • Request the name and contact details of the next appeal level.

Ask whether the school will correct the source record as well as the immediate decision. Otherwise the same inaccurate profile may influence later recommendations.

Check safeguarding and ongoing oversight

For tools involving cameras, microphones, student communications or behavioral monitoring, ask about filtering, monitoring, age controls and incident response. Which data-protection officer and safeguarding lead approved the tool? UK guidance recommends consulting those roles before procurement and continuing to monitor the deployment.

Ask what triggers a reassessment

  • A model or software update.
  • A vendor or sub-processor change.
  • A security incident or unauthorized disclosure.
  • A new error pattern or subgroup disparity.
  • A change in the tool’s purpose or the decisions it influences.

Ask how often the school reviews accuracy, accessibility, complaints and data use, and whether families receive notice of material changes. A one-time approval is not enough when the model, contract or student population changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect learning and student agency

Ask how AI will support learning rather than replace foundational reading, writing, mathematics, reasoning and teacher judgment. Students should receive instruction about AI limitations, acceptable use, attribution and the difference between assistance and submitting machine-generated work as their own.

For plagiarism or AI-use detection, ask what corroborating evidence a teacher must have before raising a concern. A detector’s score should not be treated as proof of misconduct, particularly for multilingual writers or students using accessibility tools. The school should provide a way for the child to explain their process and submit drafts or other evidence.

Use a comparison sheet when several systems are under consideration

Ask the school to compare alternatives against the same criteria rather than choosing on marketing claims or price alone.

Comparison area What to ask the school to document
Educational validity Whether the tool measures the intended skill and evidence that it improves learning or assessment.
Error profile False-positive and false-negative rates, validation population and stability across subjects and ages.
Equity and accessibility Testing with disabled students and multilingual learners, accommodations and an equivalent non-AI option.
Human oversight Named reviewer, override authority, documentation and appeal route for high-impact decisions.
Data minimization and retention Fields collected, storage location, retention period, deletion and return at contract end.
Vendor transparency Sub-processors, model-training terms, update notices and an explanation of how the tool works.
Security and safeguarding Access controls, incident response, age protections and approval by privacy and safeguarding leads.
Cost and lock-in Contract term, data portability and whether leaving the service disrupts essential records.
Non-AI alternative A practical assessment or support route with equivalent educational value.

A practical meeting checklist

  1. Bring the child’s year group, subjects, accommodations and the decision you are concerned about.
  2. Ask the purpose-and-impact question first, then request the policy and privacy documents.
  3. Record the data fields, retention period, model-training terms, sub-processors and human reviewer.
  4. Ask for validation, subgroup testing, error rates and the non-AI alternative.
  5. Confirm consent or opt-out mechanics, appeal deadlines and the person responsible for corrections.
  6. Ask when the school will re-evaluate the tool and what event would end its use.
  7. Follow up in writing, summarizing the answers and any documents promised.

A school should be able to explain the tool’s purpose, evidence, limits, data practices and safeguards without relying on technical jargon. If it cannot identify a responsible human, provide an understandable appeal route or offer an equivalent alternative, pause the discussion about using the system for a high-impact decision and ask for review by the school’s privacy and safeguarding leads.
