Paramount+ not working? Start by identifying the device and exact symptom, then restart that device before changing settings. Next verify that the model, operating system, plan and country support Paramount+, install available app or system updates, and only then follow a symptom-specific branch. A Roku showing black or purple video while audio continues needs a separate HDMI check; buffering, sign-in failures and unsupported-device messages do not.

The steps below distinguish an app or device fault from compatibility, network, display-connection and account problems. They apply to common Paramount+ setups, but supported models and features can vary by country and plan. Work through the least disruptive checks first, and record what happens after each one so you can give Paramount+ Support a precise report if you need help.

Start with the symptom, device and scope

Before changing anything, write down three facts:

  • Which device runs the Paramount+ app? For example, a Samsung Smart TV, Apple TV or Roku connected to a television.
  • Does the problem affect one title or every title? One failed program points to a narrower playback case; failure across the service calls for device, compatibility, account or service checks.
  • What exactly happens? Record whether the app crashes, playback buffers, an error code appears, video is black or purple while audio plays, or sign-in fails.

Also note whether other apps work on the same device and whether Paramount+ works on another supported device. Those comparisons do not prove a cause, but they show whether the failure follows one device or account. One person’s playback failure does not establish a platform-wide outage. Paramount+ separates its help material into streaming problems, known issues, error codes, supported devices, and account or billing topics, so the symptom determines the most useful support route.

What you see First branch to use Do not assume
App closes, freezes or will not launch Restart the device, then check app and system updates. That the subscription is necessarily invalid.
Buffering or playback that stops Confirm compatibility, restart the device, and use any platform-specific network restart guidance. That buying an HDMI cable will solve it.
Error code or sign-in failure Copy the exact message or code and use the Paramount+ error-code or account-help route. That reinstalling hardware is required.
Black or purple picture with audio on Roku Use the Roku HDMI and display-connection checks below. That every Roku playback issue is an HDMI problem.
Only one title fails Try another title and record the affected program when contacting support. That a single title proves the whole service is down.

Check whether your setup is supported

A paid Paramount+ subscription does not guarantee that every device, feature or plan works in every country. Check the official supported-device list for the exact hardware model, operating-system version, plan and country before spending time on advanced troubleshooting.

The following are examples from the supported-device information, not a complete worldwide list:

Platform example Compatibility detail stated by Paramount+ Qualification
Apple TV Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K generations 1–3 with tvOS 16 or later. Availability can still depend on plan and country.
Samsung Smart TV Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 running Tizen. Use the exact model and region listing; this example is not a guarantee for every Samsung television.

If your model or operating system is absent from the list, treat that as a compatibility question rather than an ordinary playback fault. An unsupported device may launch another streaming app normally while Paramount+ remains unavailable. Check the list again after identifying the model number and software version shown in the television or streaming-device settings.

Compatibility is also a useful explanation for a partial failure. A title or feature can be available on one supported platform but not another, and a plan that works in one country may have different availability elsewhere. Do not infer that a newer television, a different app or a successful login overrides the official model, software, plan and country requirements.

Restart before trying complicated fixes

Restarting clears a temporary app or device state without changing your account. Close Paramount+ if the platform allows it, restart the device using its normal controls, wait for it to finish starting, and launch the app again. If the problem remains, continue with the platform instructions rather than repeating the same restart indefinitely.

Samsung Smart TV

Paramount+ Support recommends a full power cycle for playback problems on a Samsung TV:

  1. Turn the television off.
  2. Unplug it from power.
  3. Wait five minutes.
  4. Plug the television back in and turn it on.
  5. Launch Paramount+ and test playback again.

If the issue continues, the same Paramount+ guidance says to restart the modem or router and then relaunch the app. It also directs Samsung viewers to check for available app updates. Follow the labels shown by your television, because menu wording can differ by model and software release.

Test the same title and a second title after the power cycle. If another streaming app works but Paramount+ does not, keep that observation for support; it is useful context but does not by itself identify an outage or account fault.

“If you are having problems playing content on the Paramount+ app on your Samsung TV* the first thing we would recommend trying is restarting your device by following these steps:”

— Paramount+ Support, Samsung TV troubleshooting article

Apple TV

Use the Apple TV restart path specified by Paramount+:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Choose Restart.
  4. After Apple TV starts again, open Paramount+ and test the same title.

If playback still fails, check for an Apple TV software update:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open Software Updates.
  4. Select Update Software when an update is offered.

Allow the update to finish before testing the app. Do not interrupt power while the system is installing. Confirm that your Apple TV generation and tvOS version match the supported-device entry; Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K generations 1–3 with tvOS 16 or later are examples listed by Paramount+.

Roku

Paramount+’s Roku guidance recommends restarting the Roku and checking for both system and app updates. Roku menu labels vary by language; the retrieved Paramount+ page is in Italian, so use the equivalent restart, system-update and channel-update commands displayed on your English-language Roku rather than copying an untranslated label. After each change, open Paramount+ and test playback again.

Keep the Roku powered and connected during an update, and wait for the device to return to its normal home screen before launching the channel. If the channel opens but one title fails, switch to the single-title branch rather than performing repeated device resets.

Install updates, then retest

An old app build or device operating system can prevent playback even when the device appears otherwise functional. After restarting, look for updates in both places the platform exposes them:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • App update: Use the television or streaming device’s app or channel-management screen to check Paramount+.
  • System update: Use the device settings to check the operating system. Apple TV’s exact path is Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.

Restart once after an update has completed, then test more than one title. If the app is current and the model is supported but the failure is unchanged, move to the symptom branch instead of repeatedly reinstalling or resetting unrelated equipment. A factory reset is not part of the documented first-line sequence here; do not erase a device merely because one stream fails.

Roku black or purple video with audio: use the HDMI branch

A black or purple picture while sound continues on an external Roku is a device-to-TV display symptom. Paramount+’s Roku instructions treat it separately from ordinary buffering or sign-in errors. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Restart the Roku.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI connection firmly.
  3. Connect the Roku directly to the television rather than through an intermediate device.
  4. Reverse the HDMI connection if the setup permits.
  5. Try another HDMI port on the same television.
  6. If available, test another HDMI cable as an optional diagnostic.
  7. If another television is available, test the Roku there.

The purpose is to isolate whether the failure follows the Roku, the cable, the television port or the original television. A replacement cable is only a test for this black-or-purple-with-audio symptom; it is not a general remedy for buffering, login errors, unsupported hardware or a service outage. If the picture problem remains after the connection tests, Paramount+ points viewers to Roku support.

Change one connection at a time and test the same program after each change. For example, moving to another port and suddenly restoring the picture points to the original port or its connection, while the same color problem on another television points toward the Roku or its output. These tests are diagnostic comparisons, not a reason to buy several cables or replace working hardware immediately.

Choose the right path for the failure

The app crashes, freezes or returns to the home screen

Confirm the device is on the supported list, restart it, and check Paramount+ and system updates. Test another title after the app opens. If the crash is limited to one device while the same account works on another supported device, record the first device’s model, operating-system version and app version for support. Avoid assuming that deleting and reinstalling the app will help when the model or operating system is not supported.

Playback buffers or stops

First determine whether every title is affected or only one. Restart the device and complete the update checks. On Samsung TV, also follow the Paramount+-recommended modem or router restart. Check whether the same account plays on another supported device or network if that option is available, and record the result. This comparison can separate a local device or connection problem from an account-wide symptom, but it cannot confirm a service outage by itself.

Keep the network step proportionate. The documented guidance specifically calls for a modem or router restart in the Samsung playback flow; it does not establish a particular speed requirement or guarantee that replacing networking equipment will help. Avoid treating an HDMI purchase as a buffering fix: HDMI checks belong to the Roku display symptom where video is black or purple but audio continues.

An error code appears

Copy the code exactly, including capitalization, punctuation and any accompanying text. A code is more useful than a description such as “it does not work,” because Paramount+ maintains a dedicated error-code help route. Include the code when you escalate rather than guessing at its meaning. Note when it appears: at launch, during sign-in, when selecting a title or after playback has started.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot sign in or the account behaves differently

Separate an authentication or billing question from a playback question. Confirm whether the issue is entering credentials, completing sign-in, selecting a profile or starting a title after sign-in. Paramount+’s support portal has account and billing categories; use that route when the device restarts and compatibility checks do not explain the failure. If the same credentials work on another supported device, include that comparison and do not assume the subscription is canceled merely because one app cannot sign in.

Only one program fails

Try another title on the same device. Note the affected title, the time of the attempt and any error text. A single-title failure is not enough evidence to declare the entire service unavailable, so keep the report specific. If every other title works, tell support that the scope is limited rather than describing it as a total playback failure.

The screen is blank but there is no audio

First identify whether this is actually the Roku black-or-purple-with-audio symptom. If there is no audio, do not assume the HDMI branch applies; return to the general restart, compatibility, update and device-specific checks. Use the Roku connection sequence when the documented combination—black or purple video with continuing audio on an external Roku—is present.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Check the account and service status without guessing

Do not diagnose a live outage from one failed stream. A time-sensitive status can change, and a single-device failure may have an entirely local cause. For a current check, open Paramount+’s official support portal and review its Known Issues information alongside the streaming, error-code and account/billing sections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscription can be active while a particular device or feature is unavailable because support depends on the device, operating system, plan and country. Conversely, a supported setup can still have an account or billing problem. Keeping those possibilities separate prevents an unnecessary factory reset or hardware purchase. No general failure percentage or guaranteed recovery time should be inferred from an individual report.

Escalate with a useful support report

Use Paramount+ Support after the platform-specific restart, compatibility and update steps fail. Give the support representative enough detail to reproduce the problem:

  • Device brand and exact model, such as the Apple TV generation, Samsung TV model or Roku model.
  • Operating-system version and Paramount+ app version, when the device displays them.
  • Your country and the Paramount+ plan, because availability can vary by both.
  • The exact error message or code.
  • Whether the problem affects one title or all titles.
  • Whether the app crashes, buffers, shows black or purple video with audio, or fails during sign-in.
  • The steps already completed: restart, update, modem or router restart where applicable, and HDMI tests for the Roku display symptom.
  • Whether the same account works on another supported device.

Include the approximate time of the failed attempt and whether another app worked at that moment if you have those details. This information distinguishes an unsupported setup from an app fault, a network-related playback problem, a Roku display connection and an account or service issue. Do not promise a resolution time; support will determine the next step from the details you provide.

A compact decision checklist

  1. Identify the device, model, country, plan and exact symptom.
  2. Check the official supported-device list for that combination.
  3. Restart the device running Paramount+.
  4. Install available Paramount+ app and operating-system updates.
  5. On Samsung TV, restart the modem or router if the playback problem remains, then relaunch the app.
  6. On Apple TV, use Settings > General > Restart, then check Settings > System > Software Updates.
  7. On Roku, restart and update; if the screen is black or purple while audio plays, perform the HDMI and alternate-TV tests.
  8. Record any error code and test whether another title or supported device behaves differently.
  9. Use Paramount+’s Known Issues, error-code or account/billing support route with the complete device and troubleshooting details.

What not to do

  • Do not claim a service-wide outage from one device or one title.
  • Do not buy an HDMI cable for buffering, sign-in trouble or an unsupported-device message.
  • Do not treat a working subscription as proof that every model, plan or country supports the app.
  • Do not repeat power cycles forever after the documented restart fails; move to updates, compatibility and the relevant symptom branch.
  • Do not omit the exact error code or the steps you already tried when contacting support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Paramount+ not working on my Samsung TV?

Confirm that the model and Tizen version are supported, turn the TV off, unplug it for five minutes, reconnect it and relaunch Paramount+. If playback still fails, restart the modem or router and check for Paramount+ app updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when Apple TV will not play Paramount+?

On Apple TV, open Settings > General > Restart. If the problem remains, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software, let the update finish and test more than one title.

Why does Roku show a black or purple screen but still play audio?

Use the Roku-specific display checks: restart Roku, reconnect it directly to the TV, try another HDMI port, test another cable if available and try another TV. This branch is for black or purple video with continuing audio, not ordinary buffering or sign-in errors.

Can an active Paramount+ subscription still be unsupported?

Yes. Device, operating-system, plan and country requirements all matter. Check Paramount+’s official supported-device list for your exact model and region; a paid subscription does not guarantee every device or feature is available everywhere.

How do I report a Paramount+ error?

Copy the exact error text or code, note the device and software versions, country and plan, affected title, symptom and troubleshooting steps, then use Paramount+ Support’s error-code, streaming, Known Issues or account/billing route.

The Bottom Line

When Paramount+ is not working, identify the exact symptom and setup first. Check device, software, plan and country support, restart the device, install updates and follow the platform-specific branch. Reserve HDMI testing for a Roku’s black or purple picture with audio, and use Paramount+’s Known Issues or support categories when the problem persists.
