Paperwork is a personal document manager for Linux and Windows that helps you bring documents together, add labels and keywords, and find them later. You can import files already on your computer or scan paper records; you do not need a scanner if your documents are digital. Its value is in organizing and retrieving documents, not replacing a general-purpose office suite.
What Paperwork does
Paperwork is built around three jobs: getting documents into the app, organizing them, and retrieving them. The project describes support for scanning or importing personal documents and cites common standards including JPEG, hOCR and PDF. OpenPaperwork’s product page presents it as a personal document manager.
A ZDNET article published August 28, 2026, describes a broader set of formats and features, including PDF, DOCX and ODT files, scanner support, OCR, page-orientation detection, quick scan edits, labels and keyword suggestions. Treat that list as the article’s report, not as a complete or current official compatibility matrix. Check the project’s current download information for formats or scanner support you depend on.

How the document workflow works
Import or scan documents
Add files that are already on your computer, or scan physical records if you want to digitize them. Paperwork’s official description supports both routes. A scanner is therefore optional: it is useful for paper receipts, letters or forms, but not a prerequisite for organizing digital files.

Add labels and keywords
After adding a document, use its properties to attach labels and keywords that will help you recognize or retrieve it. The ZDNET article reports that Paperwork can suggest keywords and labels, including automatically guessed labels. These suggestions can help with filing, but review them rather than assuming they accurately describe every document.
Search and narrow the results
The reported workflow supports searching by filename or text found inside a document, and filtering by label or date. You can also combine search criteria. That makes the organization useful even when you do not remember a precise filename, provided the document’s text can be read by the app’s OCR or otherwise indexed.

Platforms, downloads and OCR considerations
The ZDNET article identifies Linux and Windows as supported platforms. For Linux, it reports distribution package managers and Flathub as installation routes; the project also has a GNU/Linux download page and a Flathub listing. Windows users can use the project’s installer, according to the article. Refer to the current project download instructions for the appropriate package rather than relying on an old version number.
There is a specific OCR caveat in the project’s release notes: the archive named paperwork_x.y.z_win64.zip contains Paperwork but does not include Tesseract or its language data, which OCR requires. The release note recommends the installer instead. This warning applies to that archive type; it does not establish that every installer or later package has identical dependencies. Check the release notes and current download guidance if you plan to install from an archive or need OCR.

What to check before choosing Paperwork
- Platform: Confirm that the current package supports your Linux distribution or Windows setup.
- Formats: Verify the formats you need against current project documentation; the article-reported format list is not a formal compatibility guarantee.
- OCR: If searching document contents matters, confirm that OCR and the needed language data are available in your chosen installation.
- Scanner: If you plan to scan paper, check whether your scanner works in your particular system. The available information does not provide a supported-model list or guarantee for individual devices.
- Storage expectations: Do not treat a general description of local document management as a backup, security, or file-preservation guarantee.
Privacy and file handling
ZDNET author Jack Wallen describes Paperwork as local-only and reports that importing files copies them into ~/papers without changing the originals. That is his account of using the app, not an independently verified guarantee for every version or configuration. If the location of stored files or preservation of originals is important, check the behavior of the specific version you install and maintain a separate backup.
