For most new Minecraft: Java Edition servers that will use plugins, choose Paper. It is built on the Bukkit/Spigot ecosystem, adds performance-oriented changes and administration tools, and remains close enough to the familiar plugin model for most projects. Choose Purpur when you specifically want Paper compatibility plus extensive gameplay and mob-behavior configuration. Stay with Spigot when an existing server, plugin, or operations process depends on Spigot behavior and you have not yet validated a migration.
There is no authoritative, controlled benchmark proving that one of these projects is always fastest. Your result depends on the Minecraft version, Java runtime, hardware, player count, simulation distance, plugins, and configuration. Treat Paper as the sensible starting point, then profile the actual workload and test any software change against your world and plugin stack.
Quick answer: which one should you use?
| Situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New survival, SMP, or minigame server with plugins | Paper | It combines broad Bukkit/Spigot plugin compatibility with performance work, administration documentation, profiling guidance, and additional APIs. |
| You want configurable mobs, gameplay rules, or many non-vanilla options | Purpur | Purpur is a drop-in replacement for Paper focused on configurability and additional gameplay features. |
| An established server depends on Spigot-specific behavior or tooling | Spigot | Keeping the known environment avoids migration risk until a tested replacement is ready. |
| Exact vanilla mechanics are the priority | Test Paper and Purpur before committing | Paper documents behavior changes from Vanilla, and Purpur adds still more configuration. Farms, redstone, duplication-sensitive mechanics, and mob behavior need workload-specific testing. |
Paper’s official documentation describes it as a Minecraft: Java Edition server designed to improve performance and provide more advanced features and API. See the Paper documentation and its administration guide. Purpur’s documentation describes Purpur as a Paper drop-in replacement designed for configurability and new gameplay features; its official documentation explains the project and build APIs.
What Spigot, Paper, and Purpur actually are
Spigot: the compatibility-first reference point
Spigot is the established Bukkit/Spigot plugin-server environment. Many older server setups, tutorials, control panels, and plugins were built around its behavior and file layout. That makes Spigot a reasonable choice when you are preserving an existing deployment rather than starting from scratch.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Spigot is not automatically the right answer for every new server. Its strongest advantage is continuity: the fewer layers you change, the fewer opportunities there are for a plugin, script, permission setup, or administrator habit to behave differently. If your current server is stable and its plugins explicitly support Spigot, changing software only for a theoretical performance gain is difficult to justify without measurements.
Paper: the practical default for new plugin servers
Paper is a Minecraft: Java Edition server that extends the Bukkit/Spigot model with performance improvements, fixes, administrative features, and additional API. Paper’s documentation states that plugins are the most powerful way to extend Paper beyond configuration files, and it provides installation, profiling, update, migration, and troubleshooting guidance.
Paper is usually the best compromise between compatibility and control. Most Bukkit and Spigot plugins are designed to run on Paper, but a plugin that reaches into server internals, depends on a particular bug, or bundles native code still needs testing. Paper also documents changes from Vanilla, so “supports Spigot plugins” does not mean “behaves exactly like an unmodified Vanilla server.”
Purpur: Paper with more switches and gameplay choices
Purpur is intended as a drop-in replacement for Paper. Its design goal is configurability: administrators can alter more gameplay and entity behavior than they can on a conservative Paper installation. Purpur’s API documentation says that importing Purpur includes APIs provided by Pufferfish, Paper, Spigot, and Bukkit, which gives plugin developers a broad compatibility surface.
Those extra options are useful for custom survival experiences, hubs, minigames, and servers that want unusual mob rules or mechanics. They also increase the number of settings that must be documented and tested. A Purpur server can be stable, but stability depends on the selected configuration and plugins rather than on the project name alone.
Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur: feature comparison
| Comparison point | Spigot | Paper | Purpur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Established Bukkit/Spigot server environment | Performance- and API-focused Spigot-compatible server | Paper replacement emphasizing configuration and gameplay features |
| Plugin/API compatibility | Native target for plugins written specifically for Spigot/Bukkit | Broad Bukkit/Spigot compatibility; internals-dependent plugins require testing | Includes Pufferfish, Paper, Spigot, and Bukkit APIs according to Purpur documentation |
| Performance approach | Use as the baseline for an existing stack | Performance improvements, profiling tools, and tuning guidance | Paper’s performance base plus additional configurable behavior |
| Vanilla behavior | Check the behavior expected by your existing deployment | Documents changes from Vanilla and enables obfuscation-based Anti-Xray by default | Paper behavior plus any Purpur settings you enable |
| Gameplay configuration | More limited compared with Purpur’s stated focus | Additional settings, while aiming for a relatively vanilla-like experience | Extensive gameplay and mob-behavior controls |
| Migration path | Reference point for existing installations | Paper documents migration to or from Paper as simple when performed correctly | Designed as a Paper drop-in replacement, but configuration and behavior still need validation |
| Best fit | Existing Spigot-dependent server | Most new plugin servers | Administrators who intentionally want more control than Paper exposes |
| Controlled three-way benchmark | Not published by the cited primary sources | Not published by the cited primary sources | Not published by the cited primary sources |
A 2026 comparison from Catalyst similarly frames Spigot as the established ecosystem, Paper as the performance and API layer, and Purpur as Paper with additional gameplay configuration. That framing is useful for orientation, but it is not a substitute for testing your own server.

Plugin compatibility: what “Spigot-compatible” really means
Most ordinary plugins
Plugins built against Bukkit or Spigot APIs commonly run on Paper because Paper implements those APIs. A permissions plugin, economy plugin, world-management plugin, or ordinary minigame plugin generally falls into this category. Purpur inherits Paper’s compatibility model and exposes the APIs listed in its documentation.
Plugins that need extra scrutiny
- NMS or internal-server code: plugins that access obfuscated or version-specific internals can break when the Minecraft version or server implementation changes.
- Behavior-sensitive plugins: anti-cheat, redstone, farms, mob-control, and duplication-management plugins may assume mechanics that Paper or Purpur intentionally changes.
- Native or platform-specific components: plugins that ship native libraries or depend on a particular hosting environment need a staging test on the target operating system and Java version.
- Unmaintained plugins: a plugin may load successfully while failing later under a new server build. Read startup warnings and exercise every feature you rely on.
Check each plugin’s stated Minecraft-version and server support, then test it on a copy of the world. A green startup log is necessary, not proof that every command, event listener, scheduled task, and data migration works.
Performance and stability: how to compare them honestly
Do not rely on uncited claims such as “10–30 percent faster.” The primary documentation cited here does not publish a controlled Paper-versus-Spigot-versus-Purpur benchmark. A result measured on one hardware platform, player population, plugin set, or configuration cannot be transferred safely to another server.
Record the variables
For a meaningful comparison, record the Minecraft version, Java version, CPU and memory, operating system, player count, plugin list and versions, view distance, simulation distance, world seed or workload, and every relevant server setting. Keep those variables constant while changing only the server software.
Measure the workload players actually create
- Observe tick health during peak concurrent players, not only while the server is empty.
- Test chunk generation and exploration if players regularly expand the map.
- Exercise redstone machines, villager areas, mob farms, item transport, and scheduled minigame tasks.
- Watch for lag spikes during saves, teleports, world changes, restarts, and plugin events.
- Record crashes, watchdog warnings, console errors, memory pressure, and plugin exceptions alongside performance numbers.
Paper’s administration documentation includes profiling guidance and startup-tuning information. Use those tools to find the task consuming time, then change one setting at a time. Purpur’s additional controls can solve a specific bottleneck or gameplay requirement, but enabling many changes at once makes cause and effect harder to identify.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStability is workload-specific
A server that feels faster at a fixed player count may still be a poor choice if one essential plugin fails, a farm behaves differently, or updates arrive later than your schedule allows. Define “stable” as reliable operation for your actual worlds and plugins, not as a reputation attached to a project.

Vanilla behavior, Anti-Xray, and gameplay changes
Paper provides a documented “vanilla-like experience” discussion and a page listing changes from Vanilla in its administration documentation. It also documents an obfuscation-based Anti-Xray system that is enabled by default. These changes are relevant when your community expects exact Vanilla mechanics or when technical players rely on a particular block, redstone, or entity behavior.
Before switching a public world, test the mechanics that matter to your community:
- redstone timing and update behavior;
- mob spawning, pathfinding, and farm rates;
- villager trading and breeding systems;
- portal, chunk-loading, and teleport workflows;
- duplication-sensitive mechanics and item transport;
- ore visibility, client behavior, and Anti-Xray settings.
Purpur adds more switches in these areas. Treat every non-default setting as a documented design decision: record its purpose, expected player-visible effect, compatibility implications, and rollback value. A configuration that is ideal for a custom minigame can be undesirable for a near-Vanilla survival world.

Paper’s administration guide says migration to or from Paper is simple, but “simple” does not mean risk-free. A rollback plan and a staging test protect the world, plugin data, and player inventories.
- Inventory the current installation. Write down the Minecraft version, Java version, server jar, startup arguments, plugin versions, permissions system, worlds, resource packs, scheduled jobs, and any scripts that refer to a jar filename.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console stop command and wait for the save to finish. Do not copy a world while region files are still being written.
- Create a restorable backup. Back up every world, the server configuration, plugin data, permission databases, scripts, and the current jar. Verify that the archive can be opened before proceeding.
- Clone the installation for staging. Test the replacement on a separate directory or machine first. Keep the production copy untouched until the test passes.
- Download a build matching your Minecraft version. Use the project’s official documentation and build channels, and verify plugin support for that exact version. Do not mix a jar from one Minecraft release with plugins or worlds that require another without testing.
- Replace only the server implementation as planned. Preserve worlds and plugin data, but review generated configuration files because a new implementation may add settings or change defaults. Keep the old jar available for rollback.
- Start the staging server and read the complete log. Resolve dependency errors, version warnings, permission failures, and data-conversion messages before inviting players.
- Run a gameplay checklist. Join with an operator account and a normal player account; test login, permissions, homes, warps, inventories, claims, economy, chat, world travel, farms, redstone, scheduled tasks, and any minigame queue.
- Compare performance under representative load. Use the same player simulation or live maintenance window for each candidate and record the variables listed in the profiling section.
- Schedule the cutover and retain rollback files. Announce downtime, take one final backup, switch the production jar, monitor logs and tick health, and restore the previous installation if a critical plugin or mechanic fails.
Spigot to Paper
This is the common migration for a new plugin server. Keep the same world and plugin data in staging, then verify plugins that use internals or depend on exact Spigot behavior. Pay particular attention to farms, redstone, Anti-Xray expectations, and plugins that modify entity behavior.
Paper to Purpur
Purpur is designed as a Paper drop-in replacement, so the file-level change can be small. The operational risk comes from the additional settings: review defaults, document any options you enable, and test the player-visible mechanics before opening the server.

Returning to the previous implementation
Stop the server, restore the previous jar and configuration snapshot, and use the backup taken before migration if a world or plugin data format changed. Never assume that swapping a jar alone reverses a data migration; keep dated backups for every change window.

Minecraft releases and server builds move independently of your plugin release schedule. Verify the exact Minecraft target, Java requirement, server build, and plugin support immediately before deployment rather than relying on an old tutorial.
The Paper administration documentation page was last updated April 22, 2025, and includes ongoing update guidance. Purpur’s documentation page accessed October 15, 2026, listed Build #2347 and documented API endpoints for retrieving versions and builds. Those facts describe the pages at those dates; they are not promises about future build numbers or release timing.
Use a maintenance checklist for every update:
- read the server-project changelog and migration notes;
- confirm that essential plugins support the target Minecraft version;
- clone production and test the update before the maintenance window;
- back up worlds and plugin data;
- record changed configuration defaults;
- monitor the first session for errors, lag, and data-loss symptoms.
Choosing by server type
New survival or SMP
Start with Paper using conservative settings. Build the plugin stack, test farms and redstone, and profile during the busiest expected activity. Move to Purpur only when a specific configuration solves a requirement that Paper cannot meet.
Plugin-heavy minigame network
Paper is generally the safer baseline because its performance and API work are aimed at extending the server. Test queues, arenas, world resets, scheduled tasks, and cross-server tooling on the exact build you will operate. Purpur can be useful when a minigame needs custom entity or gameplay rules, provided those rules are isolated and documented.

Compare documented Paper changes with the mechanics your players use. If exact behavior is non-negotiable, stage Paper and Purpur alongside the current server, run representative farms and redstone contraptions, and choose only after the results match your design goals.

Long-running Spigot installation
Remain on Spigot when continuity is more valuable than an unmeasured improvement. Plan a migration when you can test a complete copy, obtain plugin confirmation, and schedule a rollback window.
Hardware and hosting considerations
Changing server software does not create a universal RAM or CPU requirement. The correct capacity depends on world size, loaded chunks, player concurrency, simulation distance, entity counts, plugins, and how often the server generates new terrain. A managed or self-hosted environment should let you control the Java version, startup command, backups, file access, and monitoring needed for your chosen implementation.
When evaluating Minecraft server hosting, confirm that the provider supports the exact Java Edition version and jar you intend to run, allows custom Paper or Purpur builds when needed, exposes logs and profiling data, and provides restorable backups. A low advertised price is less important than predictable CPU performance, storage reliability, and the ability to test updates without overwriting production.
For a hosted Minecraft Java deployment, Godlike.Host provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel with SFTP/FTP access, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day with restore.
A practical decision framework
- Start with compatibility. List plugins and integrations that are mandatory. Eliminate any implementation that they do not support.
- Define the gameplay contract. Decide whether the server promises near-Vanilla mechanics or intentionally customized behavior.
- Choose the least complex implementation that meets the contract. That is usually Paper for a new plugin server, Purpur for deliberate extra configurability, or Spigot for continuity.
- Profile before tuning. Capture representative load and identify the actual bottleneck instead of applying a generic settings list.
- Stage every update. Keep backups, compare logs, test player workflows, and retain a rollback jar.
Bottom line
Paper is the best default for most new Minecraft Java plugin servers because it balances broad compatibility, performance-oriented engineering, API extensions, and practical administration tools. Purpur is the better fit when you deliberately want Paper’s base with more gameplay and mob configuration, and you are prepared to test and document those changes. Spigot remains the sensible choice for an existing, stable deployment tied to Spigot-specific behavior or tooling. None is universally fastest: measure the software, plugins, hardware, and settings that make up your actual server.
