Paper places TNT-duplication and related vanilla exploit switches under unsupported-settings in config/paper-global.yml. These options are deliberately outside Paper’s support promise: enabling them can restore duplication or permanent-block exploits, and Paper may remove the switches in a future build. They are not recommended for a public survival server.
Paper patched the underlying TNT, carpet, rail, gravity-block, bedrock, and end-portal-frame exploits in 1.15.2 and later. The settings described here are opt-in escape hatches for administrators who understand the consequences, not normal gameplay configuration. This guide explains how to identify, audit, and safely roll back the flags without providing a recipe for exploiting other players’ worlds or economies.

Paper changed several vanilla duplication and block-breaking behaviours because they can be used to generate items, bypass permanent blocks, or destabilize a server. The corresponding switches are grouped in the unsupported-settings section of the global Paper configuration.
The important distinction is between a setting being present and a feature being supported. These flags exist so an administrator can deliberately restore behaviour that Paper normally patches. If that choice causes lag, crashes, corruption, or another fault, Paper’s maintainers state that the affected server will not receive support. The settings can also disappear in a later release.

The flags at a glance
| Flag | Behaviour it restores | Default information available | Operational concern |
|---|---|---|---|
allow-piston-duplication |
TNT duplication; the same underlying bug also covers carpet and rail duplication. | Not verified in the available Paper documentation summary. | Can create large quantities of items and alter a server economy. |
allow-unsafe-end-portal-teleportation |
Sand and other gravity-block duplication through end portals. | Paper’s documented guidance is that this is not recommended; an exact default is not verified here. | May produce gravity blocks and introduces unsafe portal behaviour. |
allow-permanent-block-break-exploits |
Breaking bedrock and end portal frames through known exploits. | Exact default is not verified here. | Can damage protected infrastructure and permanently change dimensions. |
allow-headless-pistons |
Headless-piston behaviour commonly used to break permanent blocks. | false by default. |
Provides another route to breaking blocks intended to be unbreakable. |
“Not verified” means you should not infer a value from a different Paper version. Open the documentation for the exact build you run and inspect the generated configuration on your own server.
Why Paper patched these exploits
Paper’s patch history records the change in 1.15.2 and later. The patches covered TNT duplication, carpet and rail duplication, bedrock and end-portal-frame breaking, and gravity-block duplication. The current switches are therefore restoration controls, not newly implemented features.
This matters when diagnosing a farm or tutorial that was written for vanilla Minecraft or an old Paper release. A design can be technically correct for the game version shown in the video and still fail on a current Paper server because Paper intentionally closes the bug it relies on. Changing unrelated redstone, piston, or entity settings will not automatically undo those patches.
Where the settings live
Paper split its former single configuration into two files in the 1.19 era. On current installations, the global file is normally config/paper-global.yml. On older installations, administrators may encounter paper.yml; if that file is absent on a newer server, look for paper-global.yml in the server’s config directory.
Line numbers vary between Minecraft and Paper builds. Search for the key name, such as allow-piston-duplication, instead of following a line number from a tutorial. A missing key can mean that the build uses a different configuration layout or no longer exposes the option; it is not proof that the option should be added manually.

How to audit a server without enabling exploits
An audit is appropriate when a farm stopped working, when you inherited a server, or when you need to confirm that a public instance is not running duplication switches. Perform it during a maintenance window and keep a recoverable copy of the configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Record the exact Paper build. Note the Minecraft version, Paper build number, and the date of the check. The available material does not establish any 2026 changes, so the build-specific documentation and changelog remain authoritative.
- Stop normal gameplay activity. Use your established shutdown procedure before editing configuration. Do not edit a live file while players or automated tools are writing to it.
- Back up the whole configuration. Preserve the current
configdirectory and, separately, the world backup you would need if an exploit has already altered terrain or inventories. - Open the correct file. Check
config/paper-global.ymlfirst. If the server is an older Paper installation, check the legacypaper.ymllocation. - Search for each exact key. Inspect all four names in the table. Confirm that each entry is under the
unsupported-settingssection and that the value is a YAML boolean, not a quoted word or an unrelated similarly named option. - Compare the values with your policy. For a public survival server, the conservative policy is to keep exploit-restoring options disabled. If a key is absent, do not invent a value until the documentation for that build tells you whether the option is supported.
- Restart and verify. Apply any approved rollback during a controlled restart, then read the startup log for configuration errors. Test ordinary piston, portal, and block-protection behaviour in a disposable area rather than on a live base.
- Document the result. Record the build, file path, values, backup location, and who approved the change. This prevents a future upgrade or staff handoff from silently reintroducing an unsupported setting.
These checks tell you whether the switches are present and how they are set. They intentionally do not provide an activation recipe for restoring duplication on a shared server.
Understanding each option
allow-piston-duplication
This is the setting most often associated with “TNT duping.” The documented summary also associates it with carpet and rail duplication because those behaviours depend on the same class of piston bug. Consequently, treating it as a narrow TNT-only switch can underestimate its effect. A server that appears to need TNT machines may also be permitting other duplication contraptions.
The available evidence does not verify this option’s default for every Paper release. Do not copy a value from a forum post written for another build. If your goal is a stable public economy, evaluate the setting as an economy-changing exploit control, not as a harmless redstone preference.
allow-unsafe-end-portal-teleportation
This option concerns sand and other gravity-block duplication through end portals. Paper’s guidance describes the behaviour as unsafe and does not recommend it. Gravity-block machines can place unusual loads on portal areas and can generate materials outside the progression and resource assumptions of a normal server.

Do not confuse this key with a general portal-performance setting. It is specifically associated with unsafe teleportation behaviour used by duplication designs. An exact default value is not established in the available summary, so verify the current build rather than assuming false or true.
allow-permanent-block-break-exploits
This switch restores exploits used to break bedrock and end portal frames. Those blocks normally define boundaries and protect critical infrastructure. On a multiplayer server, even a small test can leave an opening that other players use to bypass intended travel or protection rules.
Because the effect changes the physical security model of the world, a rollback may not repair damage already done. If the setting was ever enabled, inspect affected dimensions and restore from a known-good backup when necessary; simply changing the value later does not recreate blocks that were destroyed.
allow-headless-pistons
Headless pistons are a separate unsupported behaviour commonly used to break permanent blocks. Paper documents this flag with a default of false. Keep that explicit default unless you have a documented, isolated reason to test the behaviour and a recovery plan.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer that disabling headless pistons disables every permanent-block exploit. The other flags govern different mechanisms, so audit the complete group rather than checking one key.

What “unsupported” means in practice
Paper’s warning is operational, not merely legal language. If an enabled flag contributes to lag, crashes, or another problem, the maintainers may decline to troubleshoot the server. The options may also be removed at any time, which can break a farm or change a world after an upgrade.
- No stability guarantee: a machine that works on one build can fail after an update.
- No support path for resulting faults: Paper does not promise assistance when these switches are involved in the problem.
- Configuration drift: upgrades, migrations, or regenerated files can change how an option is represented.
- Irreversible world effects: duplicated items can enter inventories and shops, while broken bedrock or portal frames may require restoration from backup.
Keep a maintenance record that identifies which unsupported options were present at each upgrade. Without that record, it is difficult to distinguish a Paper change from a plugin, world, or redstone failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why public servers should treat these as exploit controls
On a private test world, an administrator can discard the world after an experiment. A public server cannot make that assumption. Duplication affects every system that uses scarcity: shops, player balances, auction houses, progression gates, and staff trust. A single machine can produce items that legitimate players had to mine or trade for, and the resulting imbalance can persist after the machine is removed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Permanent-block exploits create a different risk. Bedrock and end portal frames often serve as boundaries or infrastructure. Once opened, they can provide access routes that permissions and ordinary protection plugins were never designed to handle.
If a player reports a working dupe, preserve evidence rather than enabling the same exploit to reproduce it on the live world. Capture the Paper build, relevant configuration values, plugin list, world backup, and a copy of the contraption in an isolated test instance. Then decide whether to restore a clean backup, remove affected items, or use your server’s established incident process.

Troubleshooting “TNT duping does not work”
The server is on Paper 1.15.2 or newer
Non-working TNT, carpet, rail, or gravity-block machines are expected when Paper’s patches are active. Confirm the server software and build before changing redstone settings. If the design targets vanilla behaviour, the correct fix may be a different design or a platform whose documented goal is to retain more vanilla bugs, not an ad hoc change to a production Paper server.
The key cannot be found
Check the 1.19-era split between paper.yml and config/paper-global.yml, then consult documentation for the exact build. Do not add an old key solely because a tutorial shows it. A removed or renamed option should be treated as a compatibility change.
The key is present but the machine still fails
First verify YAML structure, spelling, and boolean type, then restart through the normal maintenance process and inspect startup messages. Check the build’s documentation for the current default and scope. Avoid assuming that another option, including fix-entity-position-desync, controls TNT behaviour; no confirmed relationship for that setting is established here.
The machine worked, then stopped after an upgrade
Compare the old and new Paper builds, configuration files, and changelogs. The switches are unsupported and may be removed or changed. Restore the previous configuration only in a disposable test environment until you understand the upgrade impact; do not roll back a public server blindly if the world may already contain duplicated items or damaged blocks.
Safer platform choices for vanilla-exploit testing
Paper’s documentation points administrators who want all vanilla bugs back toward alternative platforms such as Fabric or Sponge. That is a platform decision, not a guarantee that every exploit will behave identically. Evaluate plugin availability, moderation tools, performance, backup procedures, and the expectations of your players before migrating.
For most public servers, keep Paper’s patches, document that duplication exploits are not permitted, and test farms against the supported mechanics of the exact build you run. For research or contraption development, use an offline copy or disposable private instance with no player economy and a short retention window.

A practical decision framework
| Use case | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Public survival or economy server | Leave unsupported exploit flags disabled; audit them after upgrades. | Protects inventories, markets, progression, and world boundaries. |
| Private creative testing | Use a disposable copy, record the build and values, and keep backups. | Limits the blast radius if the world or configuration becomes unstable. |
| Vanilla-compatibility project | Compare a platform designed to retain more vanilla behaviour, such as Fabric or Sponge, against your plugin and operational requirements. | Paper does not promise support for restored exploits. |
| Inherited or suspicious server | Stop, back up, inspect all four keys, review inventories and dimensions, and document findings. | Configuration alone may not reveal damage already committed. |
What to verify before publishing a configuration change
- The exact Paper and Minecraft versions are recorded.
- The current documentation confirms that the key exists and states its current default.
- The setting is located in the correct global configuration file and section.
- A world backup and configuration backup can be restored successfully.
- Players have been warned about any economy or world-boundary impact.
- A rollback owner and maintenance window are assigned.
- The post-change test is performed away from production worlds and inventories.
Bottom line for Paper administrators
Paper’s TNT and exploit switches are compatibility escape hatches under unsupported-settings, not recommended server features. Paper patched the relevant vanilla behaviours in 1.15.2 and later, and enabling the switches can restore TNT, carpet, rail, gravity-block, bedrock, end-portal-frame, or headless-piston exploits depending on the key. Audit paper-global.yml (or legacy paper.yml), keep public servers on the supported defaults, and use backups and isolated test worlds whenever you investigate a reported dupe.
